Chapter Thirteen

Rubbing my chest, I continue to walk towards the pack house. I have been having really bad heartburn for the past week, but when I was at my appointment last week with Luna, she said that it was normal for this stage in my pregnancy. That still sounds weird, the whole pregnancy thing, I guess I still have not gotten used to the whole idea of another being growing inside of my body.

"Liam...." I hear an eerily familiar voice murmur. Turning around, I do not see anyone around me. Almost everyone is on patrol or at school. Luna pulled me out after the first couple of weeks, claiming that it would be safer for me to stay home. Thinking I am hearing things, I continue to walk along the muddy path.

"Liam..." Whipping my head around, I still do not see anything. My breath is visible in the cold winter air and I shiver, not entirely from the cold. The voice is coming from the direction of the fence, and I know I could not have imagined it a second time. Slowly, I walk towards the tall wooden fence to the right of the path I am walking on, my feet squishing in the mud and low hanging branches from the trees rubbing against my sides.

Finding a small hole in the fence where a knot in the wood used to be, I peer through to the other side. Not seeing anything, I start to pull my head away from the uncomfortably damp wood. At the last second, though, I see movement from the lower branches of a tree that is about ten yards away.

"What the hell?" I question quietly to myself. Not five seconds later, two figures jump down from behind the wide oak tree. My breath hitches once I take in their appearance. Their clothes are brown and green in order to blend in with the forest behind them and they have sinister smiles on their familiar faces.

"Hello, Liam," Jenny says, giving me a small finger wave. My eye flicks between her and the intimidating figure standing next to her, Jace, but my eyes keep getting drawn back to her still slim figure. She was two months pregnant when she left here two and a half months ago; she should have a bump, but there is none that I can see.

"W-what are you d-doing here?" I stutter. My heart is pumping fast, causing me to wince from the increased pain of my heartburn.

"We came to tell you something," Jace says, his smile becoming more deadly than before.

"We're coming for you, Liam," Jenny says, "and your mates won't be able to protect you when we do." With that, they turn and stalk away. My eyes follow their backs until they disappear in the thick tree line, the clothes they are wearing allowing them to blend in with the forest. I step away from the hole in the fence, but cannot seem to walk any further. Not even a minute later, I hear two wolves who are part of the patrol walk by the fence, not noticing that people had been standing there.

On shaky legs, I continue my walk to the pack house. I arrive a couple minutes later, considering how close our house is to the pack house. Wiping my muddy shoes onto the doormat, I quickly open the front door and slip into the warm home. The girls are in the main room playing with some of the other pack children, and Luna is sitting on the couch alone with her feet tucked underneath her and reading a book. She hears me come in and looks up from her book, taking in my wild appearance. Her gaze runs along my body, starting at my shaky legs and ends at my frightened eyes.

"Liam, sweetie, what's wrong?" she asks, setting down her book and walking over to me. Olive and Grace notice Luna getting up and turn to see who she is talking to. Noticing me, they quickly stand up and waddle over to me.

"Li-Li!" Olive says, while Grace just smiles up at me. They latch onto my legs while Luna wraps her arms around me and guides me over to the couch. It takes a little longer than usual to get to the couch, considering the twin weights on my legs, but I manage. Seeing my shaky body, Luna wraps one of the throw blankets around my body as soon as I sit down.

"Now, tell me, what has you shaking like a leaf, hmm?" Luna says, picking up the girls and placing them both in my lap, knowing the calming effect their presence has on me. I wrap my arms around them and tuck them into the blanket.

"I-I was w-walking over h-here and- and," I stutter, not able to finish what I was trying to say. Noticing my distress, Olive and Grace cuddle further into me, trying to calm my racing heart and quickening breaths.

"Sweetie, you need to calm down. I don't want you to have a full blown panic attack. It wouldn't be good for you or the baby," Luna says in a soothing voice while rubbing my arms. "Take deep breaths, match your breathing with mine."

She looks me in the eyes while taking a large breath and motioning for me to do the same. My breath stutters out of me and is shaky as I try to match her deep long breaths. I feel my heart slow down and my breaths become longer and calmer after a couple of minutes.

"That's it," she says with a smile. My body relaxes into the couch and the shaking finally subsides. "I know something is scaring you, Liam. Please tell me so we can help you." Noticing my body stiffening, she sets a hand on my arm. "You're safe, nobody can hurt you."

"That's not what they said," I whisper, closing my eyes.

"That's not what who said?" she asks, slightly tilting her head to the side.

"Jenny and Jace," I say, wrapping my arms even tighter around my sisters.

"What?" Luna questions. "When did they talk to you? Where did you see them?"

There is a look of shock on her face, but no trace of disbelief can be seen. I thought she would not believe me, but she does not doubt me for a second.

"I-I was walking over here when I heard them call my name. They were standing on the other side of the fence and told me they were coming for me and nobody could protect me." I turn to look at Luna. "B-but what if they find out about my pregnancy? I don't want them to hurt the baby. A-and what if they take my sisters just in case they may present as Omegas?" Luna has a sympathetic look on her face.

"They can't hurt any of you, Liam."

"Yes, they can!" I shout. Luna looks shocked at my outburst, and Olive and Grace try to press even closer to me. "They went unnoticed by the patrol. How am I to believe they can't hurt the ones I love if they are able to slip past the ones in charge of guarding us?"

"The patrol didn't notice them at all?" Luna asks. I nod my head in confirmation. She looks away from me, and a few seconds later, the front door is flung open and my mates step inside.

"Liam, what's wrong?" Erik asks, noticing my obvious distress. They both rush over to me. Luna scoots over, allowing them to sit on either side of me and wrap their arms around me and my sisters. Over the blanket, first Erik then Ethan place a hand on my barely noticeable bump. They have taken to rubbing it whenever possible, even though it just looks like a little pudge from eating too much. It always relaxes them to feel it, so I do not mind.

"Are you okay, love?" Ethan asks.

"We have a problem," Luna says in a serious voice. "I am going to get your father, then we have some serious things that we need to discuss." With that, she stands up and walks out the front door, putting on a coat as she goes.

"What happened?" Erik asks me, rubbing his thumb soothingly on my bump. I tell both them the same thing I told to Luna. Both of them scoot closer to me while I am talking and I can feel myself calming down. Their scents are strong from being so close, and the further along I get in the pregnancy, the more I want them near me.

We are sitting in a comfortable silence when the front door opens and Luna and Alpha Seren walk inside the house, taking a seat on the couch across from us.

"Luna told me everything that happened, Liam, and now we know how the Warriors found out about you," Alpha Seren says.

"Do you think Jenny and Jace are part of the Warriors?" Ethan asks. "But they're Betas, not Alphas."

"When the Warrior pack was first formed, it was made up entirely of Alphas, but now they take in Betas, and all the Omegas in the pack have been kidnapped," Luna says.

"It makes sense, actually," Erik says. We all turn to look at him and he just shrugs his shoulders. "Jace and Jenny hate Liam. It would make sense that they would team up with a pack of wolves who want to take him away from us and use him for their own gain."

I shiver despite the blanket and the body heat emanating from my sisters and my mates. I knew the hated me, but to go this far? I tune everyone in the room out while trying to organize my thoughts. Thinking of their animosity for me makes my thoughts wander to my parents. That is when things start to click into place. The letters in the carving make sense, now that I really think about it. Jenny and Jace could not have teamed up with the Alphas alone, they are not smart enough for that, but I know someone who is.

"Wait a minute," I say, causing everyone to fall silent. "The letters in the symbol make sense now. One 'j' for Jenny and the other 'j' for Jace."

"Okay," Ethan says, drawing out the word. "That makes sense, I guess. But what about the 'o'?"

"Owen," I say with an emotionless voice.

"Your father?" Luna questions. I answer with a simple nod of my head, refusing to look at anyone. To think that my own father would go this far to have me harmed. But he always has despised me, especially when I displayed as an Omega.

"Love," Erik whispers, gently turning my face towards his. Looking into his bright green eyes, I do not see sympathy or pity, I just see love. He places a kiss on my forehead and I lay my head on his shoulder.

"Well, at least we know the specific wolves who are targeting you," Alpha says. Everyone in the room nods their head and I can feel the exhaustion weighing down on me, and the heartburn is not helping.

"They are going to attack soon," Luna says. "And we have no way of knowing how many wolves the Warriors have in their pack. Plus, with the ever-growing number of the infected on the other side of the fence, we are looking at a long hard battle ahead of us."

With grim faces, everyone in the room stands up. I hold my sisters closer to me while taking off the warm blanket. I grab their tiny jackets and hats and dress the girls in their warm clothes before zipping them up in my own jacket.

"Liam, you need to stay sa-" Luna is cut off my loud screams coming from outside the pack house.

"What the hell?" Erik, Ethan, and the Alpha say at the same time. All of us gather around the large living room window and peer outside, and what greets us is utter chaos. A huge section of the fence is missing and infected humans are stumbling in through the opening while large werewolves attack those who are trying to run away.

Luna closes the curtain we had pulled open. "It looks like the Warriors decided to come earlier than we expected."
