Chapter Nine
"What?" I say in a calm voice, directly contrasting with what I am feeling inside.
"Jenny is pregnant, Liam," Erik tells me, matching my tone. He and his brother are sitting on the couch across from me. Both of them are trying to project an outward appearance of calm, but the way they are constantly clenching and relaxing their hands tells me how agitated they are on the inside.
"H-how could this happen? How far along is she? Haven't you guys ever heard of a condom?" I question, a million thoughts racing through my head. I cannot believe this is happening. The person who made my life miserable would now be having my mates' baby. My heart is aching. I know I cannot have children for them, but that did not make this hurt any less.
"Yes, Liam, we did use a condom, but I guess it didn't work. I don't know how far along she is, but you could always ask her yourself," Ethan says, motioning to Jenny who was sitting next to them on the couch.
I turn to look at her and raise my eyebrows. She quickly glances up at me before returning her gaze to the ground. "Luna told me that I was about ten weeks, give or take a couple of days." Shock and apprehension flow throughout my body. She is not acting like a typical ten-weeks pregnant werewolf, but I keep my thoughts to myself.
Shakily, I nod my head and glance at my sisters playing with their toys over by the window. Their laughter and baby babble are the only things grounding me right now. I feel as if my heart is being ripped apart and I have no idea how to stop the pain.
"She is going to be living here from now on," Erik says, voice never wavering.
"What? Why?" I say, breaking my gaze away from my sisters and looking over at Jenny. She does not say anything; she just continues to look at her feet.
"You can't honestly expect us to not have her live here while she is carrying our cub, Liam," Ethan says. I flinch as he says that, wrapping my arms tighter around my body as if that will stop the ache in my chest.
"She is living in the pack house, that isn't too far of a walk. I don't see why she has to move in here. We don't really have that much room." I look up at them.
"She'll just move into the spare bedroom. We will just move her mattress over here, and all the extra stuff can be moved into the girl's room or into the garage," Erik says, finality in his tone. "She will be living with us, Liam, and you need to deal with it somehow."
I look away from them and do not watch as they walk out of the house. Tears start to overflow, no matter how hard I try to hold them back, and I do not even try to wipe them away.
"Liam," I hear Jenny whisper. I turn my gaze over to her, and notice she is also crying. "I am so sorry." Her voice wavers and she comes to sit next to me. "I never meant for this to happen and I am so ashamed of myself." She looks up at my face, gently lifting her hand to wipe away my tears. "I know I was horrible to you, and I hope you can forgive me, someday."
I continue to stare at her, unable to say anything, and I cannot tell whether she is telling the truth or not. My mind keeps telling me that this is all wrong, something is not right. She warily reaches her hand towards mine and twines my fingers with hers. I try not to flinch away from her, but I cannot hold back the shudder that comes over my body.
Looking at me, she continues with what she was saying before. "I keep thinking about what my mate will think of me, if I were to ever find him. Will he abandon me because I had another person's baby? Will he still love me?"
I stay silent, not able to find my voice. She is rubbing me the wrong way, but I do not want to blow this way out of proportion and have my mates be mad at me. I already did that once when I thought they were cheating on me. This time I need to stick it out.
"Do you forgive me?" she asks.
"For hurting me? Sure. For having my mates' baby? I just don't know yet." I stand up and walk towards my sisters. "Okay, babies, time for your nap." I pick them up and turn towards Jenny. "Let me just put them down and then I will show you to your new room."
Ten short minutes later, I am showing the room to Jenny. "I guess we will move all of this stuff into the garage. Honestly, I have no idea how it will fit, but Erik and Ethan seem determined." I glance over at Jenny. "We can put your bed over there by the window, and we will have to find a dresser for your clothes."
"It looks good," Jenny says. I nod my head and look around.
"Why don't you get comfortable, I am going to go lay down for a little bit," I say, turning towards the door. Being around her makes me feel worse than I already am.
"Are you feeling alright, Liam?"
"Yeah, I'm just exhausted, and my stomach isn't in the best of moods rights now."
"Well, I am feeling pretty tired, too," she says. "I think I will go lay down on the couch for a little bit."
I nod and walk with her towards the living room. "There is a blanket on the back of the couch, and I can get you a pillow if you don't want to use one of the throw pillows."
"No, no. This is fine. Go lay down, I think we both need it," she tells me. Before I can leave, she gives me a quick hug, squeezing me too tight for comfort. "Thank you, Liam. I don't think I could hold myself together if I were in the same position as you."
I barely am.
Walking into my room, I practically collapse onto the bed. Hopefully, my nap will help curb my never ending exhaustion and some of my queasiness. Closing my eyes, I snuggle underneath the blankets and fall into a dreamless sleep.
*****
I wake up with a throbbing headache and my stomach rolling. Running to the bathroom, I almost barge straight into Erik.
"Liam? Love, what's wrong?" he asks. Shoving past him, I barely make it to the bathroom. My head pounds as I empty my stomach into the porcelain god. Someone rubs my back and turning around, I see Erik and Ethan standing there.
"Love, we are taking you to our mother right away," Ethan says, lifting me up and holding me bridal style.
"Oh, so now you care about me," I say, tucking my head against his chest.
"Liam, what are you talking about? We always care about you," Ethan says, his chest vibrating with every word.
"It didn't seem like it when we were talking before. You wouldn't even listen to me, and neither of you asked how I felt about all of this."
Ethan's chest rises and falls as he sighs, but it is Erik who responds. "Love, I'm sorry. We're just surprised by everything that is happening. To all of a sudden hear that you are going to be a parent is nerve wracking."
"Yeah, well, I know you want to be close to Jenny and your pup, but I don't really think she needs to live with us. I may be a little prejudiced, but something about her isn't sitting right with me," I say. Before I can stop myself, words are tumbling out of my mouth. "How do you even know the baby is yours? If it was, she would be feeling a strong pull to be near you guys, and so far, she has just seemed uncomfortable around you two. "
We are only a few yards from the pack house now. "What do you mean she would be feeling a pull towards us?" Erik questions.
"Have you guys never been near a pregnant werewolf before?"
"No," they say in unison.
Before I can tell them more, we are walking into Luna's office. She is sitting on her plush red couch reading a book when we walk in. Hearing us enter, she puts the book down.
"Liam, why is Ethan carrying you?" she questions, getting up from the couch. Ethan takes the opportunity to set me down on the vacated couch.
"Liam was throwing up earlier, and we want to find out what is wrong," Ethan tells her.
"Really? Liam, how have you been feeling? Is throwing up the only symptom you've had?" she says, sitting in a chair across from me, and I sit up. As soon as the room becomes available, Ethan and Erik sit next to me.
"No," I answer. "I have had a headache for the past few days, and I am always exhausted. No matter how much I sleep, I always seem to be tired." As if to emphasize this, I lay my groggy head on Erik's shoulder.
Luna gives me an odd look. "Liam, was the mating ceremony the first time you had sex?"
"Y-yeah," I stammer, waking up at the odd question.
"That was about seven or eight weeks ago, right?"
"What does his sex life have to do with him not feeling well?" Ethan asks.
"Liam, why don't you lay back on the couch. Erik, could you please go grab that machine over there with the screen," Luna says. Erik gives her an odd look but does not hesitate to do as she says. I lay back on the couch. "Lift up your shirt, please." I look at her quizzically but pull my shirt up anyways. "This may be a little cold," she says as she pours a blue gel onto my stomach.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Ethan says.
"Wait just one second," she says, not breaking her gaze from the screen. "Found it!" She then she turns the small screen towards us. "This, boys, is a baby. Your baby."
"Um, excuse me, but I have a penis," I say, staring at her.
"I can account for that," Erik says.
"Me, too," Ethan responds.
"Trust me, I know," Luna says with a smile. "Some people don't know about how unique Omegas are, due to how rare they are."
"So, you're telling me that because I am an Omega, I can have children, even though I am a penis wielding male werewolf," I say.
She snorts. "Yes, Liam. You will have the same exact pregnancy as any female werewolf would have. Judging by this ultrasound, I would say you are somewhere between seven to eight weeks along. Have you been feeling clingier to Erik and Ethan, yet?"
I blush before giving a small nod. My mates must have seen me because the next thing I know I am being placed in Ethan's lap, and Erik is wrapping his arms around the both of us.
"Love, why didn't you say anything?" Erik asks me.
"I was kind of embarrassed. I thought I was just being irrational, so I didn't say anything."
Luna laughs. "It will only get worse. You will want to be near them twenty-four-seven, and your hormones will be getting stronger soon."
"Wait, why does he feel the need to be near us twenty-four seven? Not that we don't love it, but still," Ethan says while massaging the bottom of my back.
"It's the pup's way of making sure its, ah, 'mother' is always protected," Luna tells us.
"If Liam is only eight weeks along and he is already feeling the need to be around us all the time, why isn't Jenny?" Erik questions.
Luna looks at us, confused. "Why would she?"
"She told Ethan and Erik that they are the fathers of her cub," I tell her.
"What? That's not possible. She would have been really sick if she wasn't near the two of you if you two were the father."
"But, she was perfectly healthy when we saw her," I say. "Why would she tell them that they were the fathers?"
"I don't know, that seems a little odd," Luna mumbles while cleaning up the machine she used on my stomach.
"So, she must be pregnant with her mate's child. But, she told us she didn't have a mate."
"Yes, she does," Luna says, looking at us sharply.
"Then who is her mate?" Erik says in a worried tone.
"Jace," Luna says in a short voice, finally looking up from the machine.
"The same Jace who bullied our mate? Our Beta, Jace?" Ethan asks.
I squirm out of Ethan's lap. "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God..." Quickly, I run out of the room and back to our house.
"Liam?! Love, tell us what you're thinking." Erik says, running behind me, and Ethan not too far behind. I look at them and grab their hands, continuing on our way to our house. We stop as we notice the flames licking out of the downstairs window.
"No! No!" I scream and run towards the house. I feel arms wrap around me before I can run any farther, jerking me back into a warm chest. "Let me go! Let me go! Olive and Grace are in there! I have to save them!"
"Liam, it's too late, the fire is too big. There is no way you would survive if you went in there. We won't lose you," Erik says. I know he is right, but I don't stop struggling. My one-year-old sisters are in there. They haven't had a chance to live, yet. How could someone be so cruel as to do this to my baby sisters?
I fall limp in Erik's arms and sob into his chest. This cannot be happening. Two of the most important people in the world to me are stuck in a burning house, and there is nothing I can do to save them.
Ethan comes around Erik and wraps his arms around us, squishing me in between them. I continued to sob for god knows how long, but then the most wonderful sound hits my ears.
"Li-Li?" a small voice says. I whirl around to see Alpha Seren holding both of my sisters in his arms.
"Oh my God, my sweets!" I scream, jumping out from between Ethan and Erik. I run up to the Alpha and grab my sisters from his arms. Hugging them close to me, I continue to cry. Finally, after all the tears have stopped, I turn towards the Alpha.
"T-thank you s-so much," I croak, my voice tired from all the crying.
"I couldn't just let two innocent cubs die," he tells me, a blush spreading across his face as he rubs the back of his neck.
"What happened, Dad? Did you see what happened?" Erik questions.
"I saw a young woman running from the house. I tried to call after her to ask what she was running from, but then I smelled the smoke. I heard the two little girls crying and ran in to grab them," he answers.
"God, that bitch. I can't believe she would start a fire, knowing two children are in the house," Ethan says, his fists clenching at his sides.
"Who was it, son?" The Alpha says, a menacing look on his face.
"Jenny. That wolf we used to sleep with before we found out Liam was our mate. I guess her and Jace were upset about us reprimanding them, but this? This seems very extreme," Erik tells his father while crossing his arms against his chest.
"No wonder she told you she was pregnant with your pup. She just wanted access to our house, and to make us vulnerable," I say, clenching my sisters to me even harder. I bury my nose in their soft brown hair, trying to reassure myself that they are okay.
"Well, we are going to find them and they are going to pay," the Alpha seethes. He gives us each a hug, even me, which surprises me. "I better go get a search party going. They will be found and punished, I reassure you." With that, he turned and walked back to the pack house.
Looking around, I see that the fire has attracted many of our pack members. I am just about to suggest we move out of the cold weather when I hear my name being screamed.
"Liam? Grace? Olive?" Luna screams. I turn and see her running towards us at full speed. She reaches us in no time and crashes into me, almost sending me and my sisters to the ground, but Ethan catches us all before we can fall.
"Mom! Careful, the baby," Erik whispers harshly. He pulls Luna off of me, but I return the hug.
"James just told me what happened. I think you guys should live in one of the houses closer to the pack house, it will be safer. And, I'll make sure the scouts get everything you lost in the fire, during the next supply run." She rubs her hands all over Olive's and Grace's bodies, checking for injury. Once she is satisfied, she pulls us towards the pack house.
"Let's get all of you cleaned up, and then I think you should relax for the rest of the evening. Now, follow me, it is much too cold for you out here," Luna says, taking Grace from my arms so that she can wrap an arm around my waist.
I can tell Ethan and Erik are about to protest, knowing they will want to be a part of setting everything up for us. But, surprisingly, they keep their mouths shut and follow behind their mother. I think by now they know which battles they can win.
