Chapter Eight

This is too good to be true, I think to myself. Things have been going surprisingly well over the past three weeks. Ethan and Erik have been out working on the fence everyday, and I have helped Luna to prepare the houses for the rest of the pack. There have been no more attacks from the infected, and this has made it easier for the fence to be constructed.

Now, as I stand in the kitchen cooking some pasta for lunch, I think of how all good things have to end sometime. Small coughs coming from the living room pull me from my thoughts. Pouring the hot pasta into the strainer on the sink, I try to figure out why Grace or Olive would be coughing. Quickly, I wipe my hands off on the towel hanging on the oven door and make my way into the living room.

Grace is playing with some stuffed animals while Olive lays on the carpet, sucking her thumb and shivering. She truly has to be feeling sick if she is staying still and sucking her thumb. Usually, her and her sister are running all over the place, and she barely ever sucks her thumb.

"Baby girl, what's wrong?" I say as I pick her up and sit on the couch. She lays her head on my shoulder and seems to melt into me, even though she continues to shiver. I feel her head and realize she is running hot. Worried, I cover her with a blanket lying on the couch before walking into the bathroom to find a thermometer.

After a solid five minutes of searching, I finally find one and shift Olive so that she is sitting on the counter. Her legs hang off the edge as she stares up at me with her big blue eyes. I know she is not going to be happy with having her temperature being taken, so I press a soft kiss to the top of her head, hoping to reassure her.

"Grace, open up." She looks at me with tired eyes and turns her head away from me, just like I knew she would, silently refusing to open her mouth. I look at her and raise an eyebrow. "You going to do this the hard way or the easy way, baby girl?" She stares at me even harder than before, and finally opens her mouth.

"Good choice," I say, placing the thermometer under her tongue.

We stay there in silence for a few minutes, waiting for the thermometer to read her temperature. Finally, the little machine finally beeps. Pulling it out, I read the numbers on the screen.

"One-oh-four? No wonder you are burning up," I say, walking out of the bathroom and into her bedroom. Worry starts to gather in my stomach. We can handle a lot of things, our immune systems pretty strong, but just like humans, we are more vulnerable when we are younger. For her to have a temperature this high is worrying.

I quickly change her into some of her footie pajamas and replace her thumb with a pacifier. It took me a long time to break her habit of sucking her thumb, so I do not want to risk having her pick it back up again.

"Let's have some lunch and then you can have a nap, okay?" She simply reaches her arms up to me, and I pick her up, walking back into the living room.

"Grace, it's time for some lunch, sweets," I say.

She looks at me and says a simple, "Yum Yums?" I nod my head, and she quickly toddles into the kitchen after me. Both of them are placed in their high chairs, and tired cries fill the kitchen as I try to get their food together.

"Okay, we have some yummy pasta and sauce, baby girls," I say, putting some of the cooled off pasta into their small bowls, and placing equally small spoons next to them. Grace digs in right away, but Olive continues to suck on her pacifier and seems to be dozing off. I walk over to her and gently pull the pacifier out. The action startles her awake and she begins to cry.

"Oh, Olive, everything is alright. You just have to eat some lunch, then you can have your nap," I say to her.

"No, Li Li," she says in between sobs, reaching for the pacifier I had placed on the counter.

"Just a little bit, baby girl. It will make you feel better," I say, raising the spoon up to her mouth.

"No! No! No!" she yells in her small baby voice.

Finally, I relent. With a tired sigh, I reach behind me to grab her pacifier before slotting it back into her mouth. Looking over at Olive, I can see that she has completely finished her pasta, and is looking at her sister.

"Well, I guess it is time for your nap, baby." I take Olive out of her high chair and she toddles behind me as I hold Grace and walk into their bedroom. Stories are read and tears are shed before I am able to lay them in their separate cribs, making sure to cover them with the layers of blankets on their beds. After checking the window to make sure it is locked, I walk out of their room and switch off the light, leaving the door open a little bit so that I can hear them.

Well, I guess I am not going to that celebratory bonfire, after all, I think to myself.

Ethan and I make our way to the bonfire. Our father decided to have one in celebration of the fence finally being finished. We were going to stay home with Liam once he told us about Olive and Grace, but he insisted we go and have fun. A smile spreads across my face as I think about him, wishing he could have come with us.

"Oh, my boys," Mom says as we finally arrive at the clearing where the massive bonfire is crackling, about a hundred yards away from the pack house. She gives us a quick hug and then looks around. "Where are Liam and the girls?" she questions, turning her searching gaze on us.

"Olive isn't feeling well, so Liam decided to stay home with her and Grace," I tell her. Worry fills her green eyes as soon as I start talking, and I can tell that she wants to look over Olive to make sure that she is okay.

"Oh no! Is she alright? How is she feeling? Does Liam need help? Maybe I should go and make sure they're alright," she rambles, already turning in the direction of our house.

"Mom! She's okay, and Liam has it all under control," Ethan says in a reassuring tone.

She gives us a skeptical look, probably debating whether or not she should believe us. "Alright," she finally says. "I'll just check on them tomorrow."

Rolling my eyes, I give my mom a small smile, knowing how much she loves Grace and Olive. She will have to see for herself that Olive is really okay and that we are not lying to her. Being pack Luna means she is responsible for all pack members health, no matter what age or status they may be.

"Now, you two have fun. But make sure to stay out of trouble, okay?" she tells us, walking away once we give her a nod.

"Honestly, how much trouble could we get in at a bonfire?" Ethan mumbles under his breath, but I still hear him.

Shaking my head, I turn to my brother. "So, what do you want to do?"

"Let's just go grab a beer and see what everyone else is doing." He turns towards one of the tables to the side of the bonfire. It has three coolers next to it, so I am assuming that is where the beer is.

We walk around and talk with the other members of the pack. We have not been able to socialize with others over the past few weeks. Everyone has been concerned with building the fence and gathering supplies. It is nice to finally be able to talk with some of our pack mates about things other than what we will be doing the next day or what supplies we will need to pick up on our next run into town.

During the night, Jace comes up to us, asking for forgiveness. After hearing him ramble and stutter for five minutes, we decide to give in to his pleas, as long as he apologizes to Liam. With many assurances and thanks, Jace walked off with a skip in his step. As long as he does not hurt our mate, he can stay here. But if he ever touches Liam again, I will not hesitate to throw him out of here, and I know Ethan feels the same way.

"You ready to head home?" I ask Ethan after socializing for a few hours.

"I thought you would never ask," he says, finishing his current beer and throwing it into one of the trashcans. We turn to head back towards our house when someone calls our names.

"Erik, Ethan, wait!" We turn to see Jenny running towards us.

"What do you want, Jenny?" Ethan asks, crossing his arms and giving her a hard look.

"I just wanted to apologize for what happened the other day with Liam," she says while looking down at the ground. We do not say anything, and she finally looks up at us.

"I was just jealous. I didn't find my mate during the mating ceremony, and I was so sure it was going to be one of you. Then, I find out that Liam of all people ends up being mated to the both of you," she says, wiping a few tears from her face.

I glance over at Ethan, and I can tell we are both thinking the same thing. It makes sense that she would assume she would be our mate. We had been sleeping with her for about three months before the mating ceremony.

"While it is not alright that you hurt our mate, I think Erik and I can forgive you. As long as you apologize to Liam and earn his forgiveness, then you will earn ours as well," Ethan says, and I nod my head.

She smiles at us then looks at the ground again. When she looks back up, her smile is gone, and she has a serious look on her face.

"That may be a problem," she says.

I raise an eyebrow at her. "Why?"

"Um... Well, you see," she rambles, kicking her feet in the grass.

"What, Jenny? Why would you not be able to say sorry to our mate?" Ethan questions, impatience creeping into his tone.

"Oh, I have no problem apologizing to Liam. I know he deserves it and that I was completely wrong," she says, finally glancing up at us.

"Then what's the problem?" Ethan asks her.

"I just don't think he will forgive me," she says, dropping her gaze again.

"Why's that?" I say, getting frustrated that she will not just tell us what is wrong.

"Um, a couple of days ago, I started to feel really odd, and when I told Jace, he forced me to go and talk to Luna, so that I could find out what was wrong."

That is not unusual, our mom is the pack Luna, meaning she is responsible for overseeing our health. But why is she telling us this? Before I can voice my thought, she continues talking.

"She asked me a lot of questions and then made me take a test."

"What kind of test?" I ask, narrowing my eyes at her.

"A pregnancy test," she whispers, "and it was positive."
