A Long Journey
Calírien's head began to nod.
She began slipping from the saddle.
Her eyes snapped open as she realized she was falling. She clutched at her horse's mane and steadied herself.
Seriously? I'm falling asleep?!
She shook her head and sat upright in the saddle. They were only progressing at a trot.
As the land passed slowly by without much change she grew bored quickly.
She sang quietly to herself.
Over hills and under trees
By rivers flowing wide
Through windswept plains
And forests tall
And under stormy skies
Valleys low and mountains high
Shadows in the dark-
Amarth slowed to a stop and signaled for Calírien to do the same.
He dismounted and examined the ground.
"Orcs passed this way not two hours ago. We must hurry."
Calírien nodded.
"Amarth...?"
He turned towards her.
"What?"
She shifted uncomfortably.
"Um... Where is it we are going, exactly?"
Amarth's mouth twitched.
"Halbarad sent word that Aragorn is in Rohan and wishes for us to follow him. We are to meet with them there."
Calírien's face lit up.
"How far is Rohan?"
"We are nearing the borders now. I would say about five leagues from here."
She nodded.
Amarth mounted and flicked the reins.
Calírien took off at a gallop.
"Cal, stop!"
She heard a growl followed by a cackle.
A Warg rider appeared in front of her. The huge beast bared it's fangs and circled them.
Her horse squealed and lashed out at the Warg. It sidestepped and leaped at the horse's neck.
Calírien was thrown from the saddle, hitting a large rock five feet away.
The Warg ripped open the horse's neck. It's scream was cut short.
Calírien got up, wincing and holding her side. She unsheathed her sword and staggered forwards.
Tears sprang in her eyes as she witnessed her horse's death.
She growled and ran towards the Warg. It noticed her and turned slowly towards her, its fangs dripping blood.
She stabbed it's flank. It wheeled around, howling in pain and anger.
It bit her waist, trying to crush her.
She screamed and stabbed into the creature's eye. It emitted an unearthly shriek and released her, bolting backwards.
"Cal!" Amarth yelled.
The Orc leaped off the Warg and ran towards Amarth. Amarth dismounted and their swords collided. Amarth quickly disarmed the Orc. It growled and bit his wrist. Amarth grabbed it's neck and snapped it. It instantly fell to the ground, dead.
Calírien sat up shakily.
Amarth ran towards her.
Her waist was soaked with blood.
"It's not as bad as it looks." She said weakly.
"You are lucky to be alive." He said sharply.
She tried to stand up.
Probably shouldn't have done that.
She staggered forwards, leaning against Amarth's horse.
He ran forwards to help her.
"I'm fine." She snapped.
He shot her a glare before rummaging through the saddle bag. He stormed past his horse, who pranced nervously.
He had found a bit of gauze and began wrapping her waist.
She bit her lip as a fiery pain shot through her ribs.
He looked up at her.
"That was the most foolish.."
He broke off and sighed.
He lifted her into the saddle and grabbed the reins.
He walked in front of the horse, leading them.
Cal's sides burned with each step they took. Amarth was silent the rest of the night.
Slowly a light grew in the sky.
After a few hours the sunlight streamed through an opening in the mountain peaks.
Two hours passed and not a word had been spoken between them.
Finally Cal spoke.
"Are you mad at me?"
Amarth turned around.
"No, Cal. I'm worried about you."
"I'm fine, Amarth."
He looked at her.
His eyes narrowed and he continued walking forward.
"You are mad at me."
He spun around.
"Don't I have a right to be? You are far too reckless." He hissed.
Calírien's eyes widened.
He jerked the reins forward and his horse squealed in surprise.
Cal glared at the back of his head.
A whole day passed without anything more being said between them.-
-The next afternoon, Amarth slowed to a stop.
"Listen, we can't go on like this." He muttered.
"Like what..." Calírien pretended not to notice.
"You know perfectly-" he broke off, sighing.
"Not talking to one another. I am sorry for my actions, but I was concerned and angry. Please forgive me."
Calírien looked at him blankly.
Then she quickly formed a plan to use this to her advantage.
"I don't know... Your actions are nearly unforgivable." She feigned anger.
"Cal..." He growled.
She merely lifted her head and looked away, though he caught the slightest shadow of a smile playing on her lips.
Suddenly Amarth perceived what she was doing. Trying not to grin, he strode forward.
"O my queen, I know my actions were unforgivable. If there's any way I could make it up to you..."
"Well..." She began, her smile giving her away.
They both laughed.
"I truly am sorry, Cal. I just..." He trailed off, looking away.
"What?" She questioned, head tilted slightly.
He glanced at her a moment longer before lowering his gaze and sighing.
"I was just... Concerned, is all."
She nodded, brows furrowing slightly.
Amarth attempted a smile.
"Get some rest." He tousled her hair.
She sighed.-
