4. Saved

Over the next month, Sam spent a lot of time in the garage installing her new supercharger Dom had given her. She had also asked for extra hours in the cafe to prevent boredom. Her father made sure that she didn't knew anything about upcoming missions. But that didn't really work out, because after every trip they were front page news. Samantha just had to turn on the TV to see who Delano's new victim was. It was striking that the statesmen were released after being kidnapped for about a week. Apparently they were kept in the dark that week, because when they came back they had hardly any useful information (or they just kept it a secret).

When the month was up, Sam was overjoyed to get back to street racing. She had agreed with Elijah to test drive her newly tuned car, which had now been supercharged to 218 hp. On the first ride she got a rattling noise when she accelerated, but luckily Eli fixed that in no time. She was ready for the big race next week.

When Sam and Elijah arrived in Los Angeles at 4 a.m., it was already packed with cars. It was clear that this race was much bigger than her last. It had been held in the early hours so they had the road clear. So Samantha had slipped out of bed as quietly as possible at three o'clock. Also, the race was held just on the jurisdiction line between two police forces. Everything was cleverly thought out.
When they were parked, a familiar Mercedes pulled up next to them. 'Who we have here. Long time since I've seen you rookie', it was Drake.
Sam sniffed contemptuously. "Yeah, rub it in some more", she thought. Soon one of the organizers came to classify them. He asked some basics, took a quick look under the hood to see if they weren't lying (which is unacceptable in street racing ) and he looked at the thickness of their tires. Drake was classified a group higher than Eli and her.
At the first race, of the highest classified cars, Sam couldn't believe her eyes. Because besides the fact that a lot of people came, she saw the one and only Dominic Toretto standing in front of the starting line. What was Dom doing here? It had been a long time since he had been to a street race .
Of course he won, with his supercharged 1966 Shelby GT350, easily the race.
'What's that grandpa doing here?' Drake asked no one in particular. Sam couldn't bear to insult Dom like that, he was only 41. But she didn't dare say anything back.

After many other races it was Drake's turn. But now that he was no longer racing the rookies, he was only fourth out of six.
Immediately after that, it was Eli and her turn. Although Samantha was a little less nervous than at her first race, she could feel the beads of sweat coming back. Hopefully Dom didn't tell her father, because that would mean another month of house arrest. The starting shot went off and she heard her supercharger work. As she passed Eli, a subtle grin appeared on her face. Sam loved this adrenaline. In these moments she forgot all worries. There was no world around her, no other people, just here and now.
As she crossed the finish line, she realized there were no cars in front of her. Suddenly a lot of people came rushing towards her. She had won! Drake picked her up and placed her on his neck so that she rose above everyone else. 120 dollar in cash was pushed into her hands by one of the organizers. Elijah, who had come second, gave Sam two 20-dollar bills and a big hug. She was so happy.

But no sooner had she finished celebrating than everyone started running around shouting, 'Police!' She quickly jumped into her car and drove off. Samantha had no idea where to drive and soon lost everyone. She drove through Los Angeles to find a crowd where she could blend in with. The only problem was: there wasn't any at six in the morning. Suddenly she heard sirens behind her, so she looked in her mirror. 'Shit cops' Even if Sam said she had nothing to do with the street race, she was still fined for speeding. When she looked in front of her again, Doms Shelby abruptly appeared in front of her.
'Come! Over here', he shouted as he turned into a narrow side street. Samantha followed him down the alley towards the underground parking lot.
'You're safe here for now. This is a private parking lot of a friend of mine, so they won't come here looking for you anytime soon', Dom said already out of the car.
'Thanks. But won't you please say anything to my father? I've disappointed him enough already.'
'I won't say anything, if you don't get caught', he promised.
'Good race by the way. Congratulations on your victory.'
'Thank you, so do you.'
'No, I don't think they want me there anymore. I'm too old. Street racing is more for your age these days.'
'Or they're just tired of you always winning', reasoned Sam.
'That is also possible. But I think I'll end my street racing career here and let your generation win. But if you need me, you can always call me.'
After half an hour they left the garage. Samantha got home just in time to pretend she was still asleep. Fortunately, her father hadn't noticed.
