Chapter 20
"How are you-" I began in amazement at the sight of my cousin.
"Long story short, I'm here to help. Just because Dom and I aren't on the same page doesn't mean I would let you suffer in this hell hole. I come bearing gifts. Here, Dom and Hobbs told me you needed these. Do I need to know why you need fake blood?"
"No, not yet. This plan needs the utmost secrecy. However, I'm very glad you got this to me. This is great. So does Lynch know that you're family to me or...?"
"No, he just thinks I have a vendetta against Dom because he got my father killed. So a partial truth if you will. We can't act all buddy-buddy with each other outside of our rooms. Listen, Hobbs told me to tell you to call him when you got this. What do you say you do that now?"
I pulled out my phone from its hiding spot in a tear in my mattress. Hobbs picked up on the first ring, asking, "You got it?"
"I'm not sure if you mean the fake blood bags or my cousin, but the answer is yes to both. Thank you for both as well. I still haven't figured out whose handprint accesses the prisoner's cell but I'm working on it. Once I have it, how will I get it to you?"
"Leave that to Nico. He won't be under as much suspicion as you so he'll be able to send it over to us more easily and with less suspicion. Dom's here. He wants to speak with you."
"How are you holding up, kid?" my uncle queried.
"After sleeping for eight hours, I want to sleep another eight more. But I'm fine. Ready to get out of here. How are the others with the plan?"
"Tej and Roman are wondering how it's going to play out without you being killed, Mia's worried sick, and Gina is against it completely, and Letty thinks it's insane, but we're still going through it. The kids don't know the end of it. Dom and I discussed it and we believe that since it's the kids that are going to be chasing you down, we can't risk their acting skills when Lynch is as smart as he is. He'd know if they were faking."
"They're not going to like that," I mumbled. "Are you sure you can't at least tell Jace? He's had issues with his family lying to him before and turning against him, I don't want him to think we're the same."
"We'll warn the kids that we're not telling them something big about the plan but that we can't tell them what it is at this moment in time. Will that do?"
I sighed. "That's the only thing we'll be able to do that will sort of ease my conscience. How is everyone doing?"
"They're holding up, anxious about getting you back though. As we all are," Dom said.
"If nothing in my plan goes wrong, then I'll be back soon. Listen, I should probably get going before someone finds me and Nico in the same room. We'll be in touch once I get the handprint."
"Sounds good. We love you both," Dom said.
"We love you too." I hung up before Nico could say anything. He gave me a disapproving glance but said nothing about it. "Any ideas on how to figure out whose handprint we need to open the palm-scanner bit on the cell?"
"I have a few. One just involves me casually asking Lynch about the prisoner and see if he gives up any information about it. The second idea is a little harder. Lynch's main people are Sloane, Baltazar, and Kaiser are his main people, so I'm going to take a good guess that if it's not his hand print, it's one of theirs."
"I remember Roman and Tej telling me and Brandon about the heist in Rio. Giselle got a handprint from Reyes on her bikini. So if our first idea doesn't work, why not get their handprint on some item or if that's too conspicuous, have them grab onto me, each a different piece of clothing? Does that make sense?"
"How are you going to get them to grab onto you?"
"I'll piss them off. I'm good at doing that."
Nico snorted in amusement. "You always did know how to get what you want when you wanted it."
"That's what this family does. We get what we want, even though we don't take the easiest path to get there. Now let's go try out your first plan because I'd rather not get grabbed."

Bucky, Wilson, Steve, and Braeden were chatting with Brandon who was filling them in on what all had happened since he, Jace, and Ember had left LA. The adults were in the kitchen, talking amongst themselves. I sat at my computer, scanning security cameras in Moscow searching for any sign of Ember or Lynch, seeing if they moved. They hadn't of course, but I was still looking.
"Any sign of them?" Jackson asked, suddenly appearing behind me.
"No, not yet. How are you holding up?" I replied.
"What are you talking about?"
"Ever since you saw Ember and Lynch a couple of nights ago, you've been quiet. What's up?"
"I got her into this mess. Just seeing her next to Lynch was a painful reminder of that. I don't like that the adults haven't told us part of the plan because that makes me think we won't like the outcome of it."
"Sure, Lynch coming after her was partly your fault, but she did it save Jace's life. Trust me, Ember doesn't do anything she doesn't want to. And that plan of hers, I can bet you anything it's daring and stupid, but it's probably a genius plan. We just have to trust her."
"I know... where's Jace? I need to talk to him."
"About what?"
"I need to apologize to him for what happened after Ember joined Lynch. I realized I never did and I have a feeling Ember wouldn't want any animosity between me and the guy she's in love with."
"You think she's in love with Jace?"
"The way those two look at each other, I'm honestly surprised they're not dating already."
"I think if Lynch hadn't gotten to her, they would be. What do you say I help you find him?"
"Shouldn't you stay here and keep an eye out for Lynch or Ember?"
"Hey Brandon! Can you watch the monitors for a bit? I need to stretch my legs," I called out. My friend nodded, walking over. Turning to Jackson, I said, "Let's go find him."
The two of us walked off, heading downstairs. It was easy enough to find Jace who was sitting outside on the balcony with a beer in hand. When we walked out onto the balcony he ignored us, even though it was obvious he knew we were there.
"May we join you?" I asked kindly.
"You kind of already have," he remarked in a bored tone.
"I came out here to apologize for the way I acted after Ember was taken and after you beaten up by Lynch's men. I was frustrated and I took it out on you, so for that, I'm sorry," Jackson said.
"I'm not mad that you came after me. I'm the reason they got to her there in the first place. I'm mad at you for telling Lynch about her in the first place. I know she didn't have to race but you didn't have to tell him about her, especially when you found out who she was."
"I didn't know who she was until she told her name to Lynch or else I never would've said anything about her to him. My entire goal has been to keep her out of his clutches but I failed, and I'm sorry."
"Help us get her back and I'll consider forgiving you."
"Jace, it's not his fault that-" I began but he held up his hand to stop me.
"That's not the only thing he has to make up for. You get Jack to talk to his sister sooner rather than later because she deserves that. She has lost her brother, her father, and now her family. She at least deserves to know her brother now since he's apparently with Lynch at this exact moment," Jace snapped angrily.
"Jack and I will make that up to her if we survive this whole thing. I've been saying that since the get go."
"Is he the one that taught you Ride and Die?" I queried in an attempt to diffuse the tension between the two boys. Jackson nodded. "You know, for a while we thought that you were him."
Jackson cocked his head, questioning in surprise, "Why would you think that?"
"The only people who knew the 'Ride or Die' saying was those in our family. When you said it... the only thing we could think of was that you were him."
"Hate to break it to you, but Jack and Jackson are different people."
"So we've noticed. Is he keeping an eye on her while she's with Lynch?" Jace remarked.
"Lynch doesn't let him near her if he can help it."
"Is it possible to hate this guy even more than I already do?"
"No one hates him as much as I do. Except for maybe Ember. Now what do you say we go find out what the game plan is so we can get her home?"
Jace stood up. "Let's get this started."
