Chapter 24
"It's good to see you again, Amelia." Jason smiled, as he helped me roll my suitcase inside my room.
"Yes, it's nice to be back for the second part of this project. Now I have to get a job and learn all the basic Italian words and phrases." I said, while he helped me dust the room a bit before leaving. This should be fun, I was going to experience the better part of three months living in Italy on my own and I had Jason and Leo to help me.
At the thought of them both, I felt guilty. These two guys obviously liked me, and I liked them both. Cole was also present in this situation and that didn't make me feel better.
"I hate this aspect of being a teenager." I sighed and went straight to unpacking, successfully pushing out boys from my head.
The next day, I decided to head out early to see the city and hunt for jobs as soon as possible. Putting on my beige coloured skirt, a black chiffon top and black ballet flats I set out.
The first thing I noticed on Ilana street was the rush of people going in and coming out of industrial and commercial buildings, must be the work rush I thought. The late morning scent of coffee and mild sweat slightly tainted the serene atmosphere I had been witnessing for a while. The road was nearly free of cars, and buses making the wait for pedestrian crossing a bit faster.
Opposite the residential complex was a school for middle and high school students, and right now it seemed like it was break as I could see tweens and teenagers walking about. I checked the time, it was exactly 11.00am... Too early for lunch break, at least in Canada.
I moved on, past the school, the St. Anne's Catholic church coincidentally next to it, and two more residential buildings until I got to the Ilana Supermarket. 'Supermarket' was written in big red bold letters, and I was sure I would be able to see the words from my apartment. Even from the outside, you could see the bustle of activity going on. I pushed past the sliding doors and was immediately blasted with cold air, creating tiny goosebumps on my skin. The supermarket was huge, with racks of items at every corner and turn with at least 2 people at every corner.
The workers had a red T-shirt with black trousers on, both male and female. One half of the store was painted in red, and the other half cream. They must love red here then, I thought as a male worker approached me.
"Benvenuti il Ilana supermercato, con cosa posso aiutarti?" I cringed a bit at the robotic voice he used, even if I didn't understand what he just said.
"I don't speak Italian, sorry." I replied forlornly, hoping he understood English.
He smiled, "Ohh, I'm bilingual. Welcome to Ilana Supermarket, what may I help you with?" Relieved at the more human tone, I nodded and asked for directions to the Manager's office.
As soon as he walked me to the office, he vanished without a trace. Shrugging, I knocked on the door and waited for an entry call.
"Come in." I heard a gruff voice say.
"Good morning sir." I said, as confident as I could be.
The middle aged man nodded and politely offered me a seat. Already enjoying the neatly organized office and warm atmosphere, in contrast to the cold outside these four walls, I sat down.
"Yes, what may I do for you? Miss..."
"Sanders. I'm a student of Fashionista and we were given a project to live and work here for a few months. So I came here looking for a job." I said, wringing my hands underneath the mahogany desk filled with papers and stock books.
"Hmm, that project they give all first years right? Well, we're short on staff yes but I'll still have to contact your school to ensure the authenticity. We've had people come here claiming to be students when they're not, you must understand, don't you?" He looked at me critically behind almond shaped glasses, no doubt fishing for a positive nod to which I gave.
At that, he called someone from the school to verify my name and my claims. Nearly satisfied, he gave me a form to fill containing my name, age, date of birth, necessary information like that.
"Well, Miss Amelia. You're welcome to start tomorrow at 9am on the dot. One of the workers will show you around and educate you on what to do. Closing hours are at 5 and the pay is not much, but it's substantial at least. We pay 30 euros each week." He finished, handing me the work attire I had seen on the other workers.
I smiled gratefully, "Thanks for the job Mr..." I trailed off, realizing he had never given me his name.
"You're welcome. I think that's all." He sounded almost eager for me to leave, so I did and was welcomed to the supermarket by cold air once again. I quickly strolled out, intending to explore a lot more so I could rest early and begin work tomorrow.
I looked through the map Vanessa gave me and decided to go see the Vatican city, well as much as I could see. Excitedly I walked towards the bus stop and sat down waiting for the bus to come in, I checked my watch, 20 minutes time.
A bit bored, I decided to people watch. I watched as a young red haired woman pushed a twin trolley which contained babies with the same red hair and same clothes, twin goals I thought. A few feet away from her, an elderly couple walked side by side holding hands and whispering animatedly to each other until they entered a homely looking building. I looked up at the building, Elderly Acres Home written in cream colour. I smiled, hoping for that kind of obvious love in my life.
The park bench I sat on suddenly had three new people, waiting just like me. A nun clapsing her hands together as though in prayer, A hip-hop dressed girl with headphones, and... Jason smiling back at me.
"Hey Jason, what brings you here?" I said, a little too saucy for my liking.
Smiling, he replied, "Fancy seeing you here, Amelia. I was going sight seeing, and that's what you're planning too right?" He inquired, pointing to the folded paper I had in my hands.
I simply nodded and looked up as the bus arrived. I wasn't too enthusiastic about Jason being here, I wanted to explore alone and meet new people without a guy by my side. But as Jason wrapped an arm around my shoulder as we boarded the bus, that wish might not be feasible anymore.
I sighed as the bus started up the way, and tried to be happy with Jason being here. At least there was less chance of me getting lost, and he was an interesting guy. Leaning towards him, I listened to his story about his arrival in Italy two years ago.
