Nanette stood in shock, staring at her phone in her hand. Her heart pounded like a jackrabbit's against her ribcage.
She wished she wasn't home alone. The late bus had dropped her off almost an hour ago, and she'd agonized over what to say to Rosa, and whether to tell her dad about everything, and whether a photo of a dead deer was really a threat so much as a warning.
She knew she should call her dad, but she hadn't spoken to him in four days and she wasn't sure if he could help, anyway.
Her phone began to ring, a Minnesota number she didn't recognize flashing across the screen.
"Hello?"
"Nanette! Have you seen Alfie?"
"Owen?"
"He and dad got in a fight and he left like three hours ago and we can't find him anywhere! We called all his friends, mom and dad went to the police to talk to your dad and they told me to ask all the neighbors so I said I'd call you—"
"Your brother's missing?" Nanette asked, her stomach dropping.
u cant save him
"Have you seen him?"
"No, but Owen," Nanette said, trying to keep her voice calm. "I think he might be in serious trouble."
