"Nan. Nanette. Wake up."
Nanette groaned and rolled over, squinting at the shadowy outline of her father in the doorway. Had she forgotten to set her alarm? She realized her dad was speaking.
"What?"
"I've got to go down to the station. I didn't want you to wake up to an empty house. I called Marie, she'll drive you tomorrow. It's too cold out for the bus."
Nanette sat up in bed, rubbing at her eyes. "What's wrong?" She moved to get out of bed, then stopped. It was still dark outside.
Her dad sighed and rested one of his large hands on the doorframe. Nanette realized he was in his deputy uniform. His badge glinted faintly in the scant light from the hall.
"Did... something happen?"
"I'm sorry, Nan."
"What is it?" She was still too disoriented for any emotion beyond dull dread.
"It's Derrick Novatny's boy, Tommy. He died. His mother found him a few hours ago."
