Chapter 2: Off the Beaten Path

I kicked Velvet's sides gently and she trotted. As we entered the woods, she did a little frisky buck. I laughed, she could be so crazy sometimes. We peacefully trotted on the snow covered trail. I listened to all the birds chirping and singing. I smiled. I loved nature. There is nothing like getting outside and going on a trail ride in the snow. As we trotted on the trail I saw a beautiful white fox. As it saw and heard Velvet it quickly ran off.

After we had gotten decently down the trail Velvet thrust her head up and bucked wildly. Not a little buck, a big ol' crazy one. It took me by surprise and I was thrust forward almost onto her neck. This only made her more giddy. She was going at a fast, bumpy trot and as I was trying to get back up in the saddle her trot broke into a fast, messy canter. My eyes widened as she started to full gallop off the trail. I was up in the saddle now, and I grabbed her reins. I yelled for her to stop. I pulled back hard, harder but nothing would make her stop.

After what seemed like forever (well it kind of was, but not really it was about a little less than 5 minutes, probably around 2-3) of pulling, Velvet finally came to a stop in a snow covered clearing that was many, many miles from home. We had ran through layers and layers of woods, and my face had a small cut or two from behind cut by limbs and briers from the trees. "Velvet! Where did you take us?" I yelled, trying to force down my rising anger.

I sat up there for a second. I needed to calm myself down before I tried to calm her down. If I tried to calm her down now, my attitude would just stress her out more. I dismounted and just took a minute or two to just breathe and collect myself.

I walked up to her face, and petted her gently. Her sides heaved, and she breathed heavy. I prayed to God she hadn't broke into too bad of a sweat, that would make her extra cold and possibly make her get sick. After she was calm and her breathing was more steady, I took off her saddle and saddle pad.

I got her a few carrots from the saddlebag. I pet her face gently. I grabbed her brush that I had brought from the saddlebag and brushed her down, talking to her soothingly. I sighed with relief that she wasn't sweating to bad and we were both okay.

"Your gonna be alright girl. I promise. We'll get back home." I held her reins and looked around. "Where in the actual heck are we..?" I immediately reached for my phone in my pocket to call Mama. I then figured out it wasn't there. My eyes widened and I quickly checked the saddlebags that were lying on the ground to see if I put it in there. "Nope. No phone.." I said after I had checked them thoroughly.

"I guess it must have slid out of my pocket when you bolted.. We're gonna have to back track.. well i'm gonna have to back track." I mumbled angrily. I looked at her. She was dozing. I laughed a little bit and grabbed her reins and walked her over to a tree. I tied her reins to the lowest branch real tight. "This should do.." I jogged over to where we had came into the clearing. I searched all over the ground, and unfortunately, there was no phone to be seen. I was so worried. "What am I gonna do if I have no phone to call Mama, and no directions back home?" I searched quite a few more minutes for my phone, but I still didn't find it, and of course the trail back home. I also didn't find that.

I sighed. We had galloped for so long without stopping. I probably wouldn't find my phone. I headed back to Velvet, tired and cold. She whinnied loudly when she saw me. "Hey girl. It really is great to see you in a time like this." I went over to the saddlebags and grabbed an apple for Velvet, a protein bar for me, our blanket, my knife, and a bottle of water. As I walked back over to Velvet I grabbed a decent sized stick.

I got Velvet to lay down when I got to her, and I sat down and leaned against her. I unfolded the blanket, and covered both of us up. I put a little water in my hands for her, and she drank it eagerly. I gave her the apple as I opened my knife and started to widdle the stick.

It got sharper and sharper. It would be perfect to throw at creatures if it came to me having to catch my own food, or it could be for protection. I put it and my knife aside, and fell asleep on Velvet.
