With Eyes To See One-Shot
Sage and Ryder were always together when they were younger.
They played together often when their parents were at work and left them in the care of Kate.
She often wondered how they would be once they got older, though once she found out about Sage's sexuality she knew that they'd be only friends, but she remembers a time when Ryder had made Sage angry.
He had said something out of line. And to date, Kate couldn't quite remember what the young 8 year old had said.
But Sage had stormed inside, her little ponytail swinging as her small hands clenched at her sides. Ryder ran inside looking for her, she had locked herself in the room and wouldn't come out.
And Ryder was devastated. Every 15 minutes or so, Kate would walk upstairs to check on them but Ryder would still be sitting down, Indian-style, waiting for Sage to open the door.
Kate sighed, "Come on kiddo, let's just leave her alone."
Ryder pouted, his big blue eyes stared up at Kate and she cursed herself for being a big softie when it came to kids.
"I have an idea, but you need to help me okay?" Kate said, the young boy nodded eagerly.
"I just want my friend back." He said.
Kate nodded, "Don't worry, I'll help you out."
They spent the next few hours going back and forth from the beach and going home collecting as much seaweed as possible.
Ryder then used a hat of his father's as an outline, though Kate didn't need to know that.
Using the seaweed, Ryder made a hat of the green plant, and placed it on his head, before launching himself at Sage's door.
"SAGE! Look what I made! It's really cool!" Ryder said. The young girl's interest was peaked as he began ranting on about going to the beach.
Sage opened the door slowly to find Ryder with a hat of seaweed, a proud smile on his face.
Sage snorted, trying to contain her laughter. "Your head is covered in kelp." She said.
Ryder pouted, "Actually its seaweed..."
Sage smiled, "Well then you're a seaweed brain."
Ryder frowned, "What's that supposed to mean?"
Sage shook her head, "That you're a dummy, but at least you have a good heart."
The two giggled as they began to talk again. Kate sighed in relief, having two kids angry at each other wasn't something she liked to see.
"So since your nickname is seaweed brain, what's my nickname?"
Ryder paused, "How about wisegirl? You're pretty smart! So you're wise and you're a girl so?"
Sage stared blankly at the boy, "I guess that counts."
Kate chuckled, "Alright you two, guess what time it is?"
"Not our bedtime?" Sage said.
