Selfish

Sage wanted her. They had just met a few months ago. At the beginning of this year, freshman year.

And yes it was the most selfish thought she's had. But was it really wrong?

To long for the girl she liked? She turned away from the small red haired girl who smiled behind her red glasses. The stands were packed tonight for the meet.

Letting out a huff, Sage returned to the track but her mind was somewhere else.

It kept drifting to the girl up in the stands. The girl who was cheering her name. The girl who was smiling at her. The same girl who was also her best friend.

Sage paused for a moment, taking in a deep breath before lining up at the starting line for her two mile run.

"Clear track!" An announcement was blaring through the speakers. "Runners on your mark!"

And then Sage felt light. She raced ahead. As if she was running away from the emotions she carried with her.

At the end of the race, Sage smiled at the cameras, the ones for the school year book. And then she searched for the fair skinned girl. She wasn't no longer in the stands.

Sage felt her heart break slightly. She said a quick goodbye to her coach, heading toward the locker room.

She grabbed her bag getting ready to leave, considering she had to help her mom move a bit of furniture. The Camaro was a ways off, but even from the distance, Sage could see someone standing by her car.

As she headed over, her heart skipped a beat. Eden was standing by her car, waiting for her.

She unlocked the car, scaring the short red-haired girl. Her glasses slightly askew from the scare. Sage gave a loud laugh. The girl blushed.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you, I just didn't know who was by my car and figured if I scared them, they'd leave." Sage admitted.

Eden nodded, "I'm sorry, I just...I wanted to talk to you..."

Sage was intrigued. "Ask away." She said, placing her stuff in the trunk of the car.

Eden paused, searching for the right words, "Look, I know a lot of people have wanted to be your friend but for mainly popularity status. And I know Ash and I are not at your level of popularity. What I'm mean is....what I'm saying is, I wouldn't hold it against you if you left us for someone better."

Sage was taken back. This? This was the reason why Eden and Ash were avoiding her a few days ago? Sage reached out toward the girl. Grabbing Eden's arm and gently get the girl to look at her.

"Eden, I'm friends with you because I want to be. Not because of popularity status or any shit like that. I like you and Ash, genuinely. And I want to know you guys better. More then any of those people who have spoke otherwise. I talked to you guys first, which means you're my friends, not them." Sage watched as the girl's eyes widened as her words were registered. "I don't care about anyone else but you guys." She said.

And Eden nodded numbly before she reached out to Sage and pulled the girl into a tight hug. And yes, it was selfish for Sage to wish they would stay this way. But her emotions were unstable. And Eden and Ash didn't need that, but for now, she allowed herself a sliver of selfishness.

She hugged the shorter girl tightly, and she and Eden laughed quietly. "You guys are my world. I swear it." She said, and she didn't mind that the girl only saw her as a friend, this was enough. For now.
