Jason's Nightmares

He was tired. Tired of hiding his emotions. Tired of watching things go from bad to worse.

He was absolutely tired. He wanted to sleep. For a few days if God would let him, or rather the Devil that haunted his dreams.

His eyes grew tired and they shut tightly as the thunder rumbled outside.

Jason hated his nightmares. He hated reliving the moment the bastard had him on the floor. The crow bar drenched in Jason's blood and sweat.

His lungs burning as he sucked in every single atom of air he could get. He could feel his ribs breaking slightly more with intake of oxygen.

Another hit and pain erupted at the side of his skull. A groan emitted from Jason's lips.

The feeling of blood sliding down the side of his neck. He knew what was coming. The heat of the blast, and burning smell of flesh meeting fire.

As he felt the skin of his face peeling off his bones and muscles, he'd wake up, screaming bloody murder, soaking from the sweat and panting from labored breathing.

He dreamt and felt it all over and over and over and over, until he couldn't tell the difference between reality and fiction.

He desperately needed someone to help him, to remotely care. But that one person was currently in a wheelchair and he couldn't seem to face her either.

A knock on his window had him pulling out a gun and pointing it at the blonde outside on the rusted metal of his fire escape. The rain was pouring down by then and Jason wondered whether to let the teen in or leave them out there.

His better side won, and his body moved to get a towel and open the window.  And in came in the newest Batgirl; Stephanie Brown.

"Oracle asked me t-" She started.

Jason raised a gloved hand to shut her up. "I know Barbie sent ya. Tell 'er I don't need a brat comin' into my home."

Stephanie sighed, "You should be grateful she cares, Todd."

Jason scoffed with a 'tch'.

"Don't you think I am? I just don't need you, Steph." Jason said.

Stephanie sighed, "Todd, you and I both know we all need someone to help us out sometimes. Me more than you, but that doesn't mean, we are allowed to mope and be childish when a city fucking needs us!"

Jason's eyes widened at the girl's change in tone and turned to see the burning fury in her eyes.

"You don't see how this is killing Oracle do you? She cares so fucking much about you! And you decide that she's not worth a few minutes and stop by to say thanks?!" Stephanie was angry at the man. She knew she was pushing things, especially due to the fact she was just getting used to the swing of things. But Stephanie didn't care. She only wanted Oracle to be satisfied at the fact that Jason was recovering just as she was.

"So tell me why you don't bother? She's like a mother to you right? Or rather older sister? So why do you make her worry her heart out? Why do you make her remember the fact that she's stuck in that damn wheelchair and can't help you!?"

Jason didn't flinch, didn't make one single move. Quietly, he turned and made his way in front of Stephanie, an indignant look in his eyes.

"You don't think that I'm dealing? I haven't slept for weeks because of his face popping up every damn time! I want to go visit I really do, but it's hard to when your stuck trying to figure out what's real and what's not!" Jason yelled.

Stephanie was frozen in shock. Her heart pounding a million miles per second.

"I'm too scared to leave my home, without thinking I'd shoot someone just because of those hallucinations. I'm scared about hurting Barbie especially. She's the only one who truly cares and I can't hurt her in seeing me struggle this much. Stephanie..please.."
His words cracked much like his voice did. And his eyes slammed shut, trying to stop himself from crying.

Stephanie sighed, "I'm sorry. I forgot that you....you have problems with him too, like Oracle."

Jason had gathered himself enough to give a bitter, tight chuckle without much humor. "My nightmares are my reality and that's one thing I can't change."

Stephanie nodded, "I'll be sure to send Oracle your regards." She turned to leave, knowing that she wasn't welcome here.

Jason sighed, "Tell 'er I said thanks. Okay kid? And tell her worry about Grayson. Not some boy she met on the job alright?"

Stephanie nodded, "Yeah sure thing."

"Oh and Steph...don't tell anyone about the screaming."

Stephanie froze, "I won't."

Then she was gone.

A/N: A rather short and small dose of Jason Todd at his, well not entirely worse, but not his best. Hope this will satisfy a few of you who asked.
