A Quick Guide to Plotting a Fantasy Story
So, you've got this brilliant idea for a fantasy novel, but you're not quite sure how to turn that initial spark into a full-blown epic. Don't worry! Plotting a fantasy book can feel like trying to navigate a maze without a map, but it's totally manageable with a bit of guidance.
When it comes to writing a fantasy book, one of the most important elements is creating a captivating and well-structured plot. A well-crafted plot can draw readers into a fantastical world and keep them on the edge of their seats until the very end. In this article, we will discuss how to make a plot for a fantasy book that will not only engage readers, but also optimize your book for search engines.
1. Start with a unique concept
The first step in creating a solid plot for your fantasy book is to come up with a unique and intriguing concept. Your concept should be something that sets your story apart from others in the genre. It could be a new magical power, a unique world or creatures, or even a twist on a classic fantasy trope. By starting with a fresh and original concept, you can capture the attention of both readers and search engines.
2. Develop your main character
Every good fantasy book has a strong and relatable main character. Take the time to develop your protagonist's backstory, motivations, and personality. This will not only help you create a more dynamic character, but it will also make it easier to weave their journey into your plot. A well-developed main character can also help attract readers who are searching for strong and relatable protagonists in their fantasy books.
3. Create a conflict and build tension
No story is complete without conflict, and a fantasy book is no exception. Your plot should be centered around a main conflict that your protagonist must overcome. This conflict should be introduced early on in the story and should create tension and drive the plot forward. As you develop your plot, make sure to keep the conflict at the forefront and build tension throughout the story. This will keep readers invested and also make your book more discoverable for those searching for gripping and action-packed fantasy reads.
4. Utilize the hero's journey structure
The hero's journey structure is a classic and effective way to structure a fantasy plot. This structure follows a hero's journey from their ordinary world, through trials and tribulations, to their ultimate victory. By utilizing this structure, you can create a cohesive and engaging plot that will resonate with readers. Additionally, search engines often favor websites and content that follow a clear and organized structure, making your book more discoverable.
5. Add twists and turns
A fantasy book wouldn't be complete without unexpected twists and turns. These unexpected events not only keep readers engaged, but they also make your book stand out in a crowded market. Whether it's a betrayal, a plot twist, or a surprise reveal, adding these elements to your plot will make it more exciting and memorable. This can also help increase your book's visibility as readers are always on the lookout for books with unexpected and thrilling twists.
In conclusion, creating a well-structured plot for your fantasy book requires a combination of creativity, strategy, and attention to detail. By starting with a unique concept, developing a strong main character, creating tension through conflict, utilizing a proven story structure, and adding unexpected twists, you can craft a plot that will captivate readers and attract search engines.

When plotting a fantasy book, writers often grapple with several key questions:
1. What is the core concept or premise?
What unique element or idea sets your fantasy world apart? Is it magic, mythical creatures, or an alternate history?
2. Who are the central characters?
What are their goals, motivations, and conflicts? How do their personal arcs intersect with the larger plot?
3. What is the main conflict or problem?
What are the stakes? Is it a battle between good and evil, a quest for a powerful artifact, or a struggle for survival?
These questions can help guide the development of a fantasy plot, ensuring an engaging narrative.
Plotting a fantasy book requires careful planning and creativity. By building a rich world, developing complex characters, and constructing a well-paced plot, you can craft a story that captivates readers and transports them to new realms of imagination. Remember, the key to a great fantasy novel is not just the magic, but the journey of the characters within that magical world.
So grab your favorite notebook, unleash your imagination, and start plotting your fantasy novel. Happy writing!
Over the course of the month, we asked for your thoughts and opinions on several questions in the genre. We are delighted in reading all your answers, and here are some of the pulses of the community!
If you discovered a hidden portal to a magical realm, would you venture through it or keep its existence a secret?
Glory_feeling2 : I'd explore it with a couple of close friends and family (that is if we can't find a way back.) And like [the above comment] said what if it's not magical as expected, but a realm where illusions prey!
PersianWolf22 : Well, before I go through it, I'd rather keep [its] existence a secret and go study in fields of science—chemistry and medicine—briefly then go in. This way I'd have something up my sleeve if it turns out I'm powerless there.
THE_ESTIMATED : That's a hard question. If some people find out about it, they might exploit it and maybe even pollute the new world just like how Earth is getting to be. So my [number one] priority would be to keep it secret. But as I am an Isekai Anime lover, venturing a little through the world would be a dream come true! But there's also another case: the inhabitants of the other world, there could be humans that live in that world too, so I should keep Earth secret from them too. And it goes on and on with the endless possibilities around the dangers and advantages of the discovery, there's just so much to say that I already started writing a book featuring Isekai as the main genre. It came from my dream but I think it's a good one. Check it out on my profile!
CrysTravel2019 : I would venture through it, for there would be endless possibilities and the possibility of learning more than one knows.
fionafel : Probably yes, and I'll probably regret it later if there is no way to get back. But the chance to discover something magical will taunt me and I will give in willingly
Payu_Rain20 : I'm adventurous! I love adventures, so I'll go check it out
If you possessed the ability to shapeshift into any animal, which creature would you choose and why?
Depressed_Wolf_0205 : I would want to be either a falcon or a raven. Ravens are my favorite animal—they're just so mystical and cool, y'know? My personal opinion.
thegraceliza : I wanna be [a] wolf , [because] basically I like to be wild [and I] always chose to [rely] on my instincts and intuition.
makducab_08 : [I] want to be [a chameleon] lizard. I like [to change depending] on the color and the nature so I can survive at any cost.
Ink3dverse : A turtle who lives in the water, saves good people, punishes the wrong! In short, the holy Akupara (Turtle God) from my story 'The Crypt of Lysidamus!'
Imagine you were granted a single wish by a mystical being—what would you ask for and how would it impact your life?
rongsenimc3 : [I] would wish for the ability to travel back to the past. I know I can't change the past but I just want to relive it once. The moments when I was once happy or when during those days [the] Internet wasn't so important and people actually spent time with their close ones.
fionafel : I would like to ask for good fortune in my endeavors. Who can fight luck, you know what I mean? It would be perfect because it wouldn't interfere too much with my existing life and it would give me a magical power-up in everything I do.
blackknightstin : I would ask and wish to [vanish] everything to start a new beginning of the world. So that, the world would be full of Hope, Freedom and Justice.
RickySchlecht : Time manipulation. If you could control time, your power could be practically endless. You could go to the future to obtain whatever technology you wanted. Return to the past to prevent some disaster, kill a future dictator, save a loved one, whatever. Or you could traverse the cosmos [at] your leisure. Forever if you like.
If you could possess one magical item from any fantasy world, what would it be and how would you use it?
zohara_khan : Invisibility cloak. So that I can stay away from people and do my own thing without being judged every single second.
THE_ESTIMATED : the most simple answer. A wand from Harry Potter. Maybe with Dragon blood and a strand of hair from a unicorn's tail.
Immortal_Scorpion : The system that allows me to become powerful infinitely
FragileCliches : Mind Reading so I know when people are being truthful, or manipulating, because it's sometimes way too difficult to know
