Fantasy Football Part 45
Chris calls Mai. "What size does Brendan need?"
"Size 4. Thank you, my love, you're the best."
After running all his errands, he is unloading everything into the house.
On the second trip to the truck his phone rings. "What?! I don't want to talk to you now or ever, stop calling me it's too late, don't you get it!" He abruptly ends the call and runs his fingers through his hair before groaning his frustration out loud before reaching the open door where she could hear.
The moment she saw him she read him like a book. She doesn't utter a word, she places her hand on his cheek then hugs him. Her love consoling him and she doesn't even know why but she knew that her husband needed her. When the time was right he'd tell her.
The next morning Mai wakes up early anticipating the arrival of her munchkins. She takes the time to clean up a bit as Mari would be dropping them off soon. The doorbell rings.
"Chris, wake up the kids are here!"
As she walks to the door her smile is a mile wide, she missed them so much.
"I've missed you guys so..." Her smile fades fast when she is greeted by a stranger, well, he wasn't quite a stranger.
"FRANK?! What are you doing here? Does Chris know you're here? I..."
Frank shuffles about not meeting her eye but for a brief moment. "It's good to see you too, Amaiya. Chris won't answer my calls or texts and when he does he's so angry, I needed to see him, to make amends with my son."
She crosses her arms and leans against the door. "Can you really blame him Frank? You keep coming back and leaving, breaking your promises over and over, all Chris ever wanted was his father to be consistent and you can't even do that. I don't know if this is a good idea..."
Just as she was trying to convince him Chris' footsteps were heard coming down the stairs. "Frank, stay here, please." She closes the door and turns around.
"Hey, are those the kiddos, does Mari need help getting them out, I missed them so much." She smiles but he could tell something was up, her smile was wavering and her forehead was wrinkled in anxiety.
She places her hands on his chest and she can feel his heart rate pick up. "Mai, honey what's wrong?" She pats his chest and sighs.
"Chris, you've been really guarded lately and I've picked up on it. I said I would wait for you to tell me and I have been patient with whatever this is but now I know...don't be upset okay? Your father is at the front door."
He turns red instantly the anger plastered across his face, there was no doubt he was pissed. He wanted to yank the door open and scream at him to get out and never return and she knew that. Before he could react she places his hands on her stomach, he instantly softens at the touch.
"Remember who you fight for, they need you but you also need to resolve this." He only nods then looks at the door for a few moments before getting the courage to turn the knob.
Frank jumps when the door opens again and there stood his son.
"Chris, you look good, son." His eyes start to water at the sight of him.
Chris leans against the door, crossing his arms in protest. "What do you want, Frank?"
Those words hurt, he didn't acknowledge him as his father or dad, merely by his name. There was no doubt, he was trying to hurt him.
"I-I just wanted to see you and tell you I finished my first full rehab program and I'm supposed to make amends with all those I hurt and I had to start with you, the one I screwed up with the most. I could never explain my actions Chris but I'm sorry and I'll spend every day until my last proving it to you..." There was an awkward silence.
"Get out!" Chris bellows.
"Chris! Come here, Frank just wait." She drags him into the foyer.
"What is wrong with you? Are you trying to hurt him on purpose?!"
He rolls his eyes, confirming.
"That's it, huh? You just want to inflict as much pain as possible, what is that going to prove Chris, huh? Answer me!" Her shouting caught him off guard, it was rare for him to piss her off.
She was now in tears, she couldn't believe her husband would be this way. "I never thought I could ever be disappointed in your actions but to see this...it's like I don't know you."
Suddenly he has no answer, seeing her upset douses all his anger.
"Baby, I'm sorry, I just wanted him to feel what I felt all these years, lost, angry, abandoned, unwanted. I have everything I could ever want except the love of my dad and it angered me that he kept breaking his promise, I was mentally broken. I shouldn't have been so harsh but you can't blame me, he might hurt me again and I don't want to revert to that ten year old heartbroken boy who cried for his dad, I can't baby, I won't." His tears are genuine and understandable.
She wipes his face. "I'll be here for whatever happens but let's give him a final try, I'm with you every step of the way. He has never met the kids and doesn't even know I'm pregnant. This may help keep him off the bottle, let's try, please." She tilts her head up for a kiss, which he obliges.
"I'm sorry I made you upset, I'll try for you..."
"No, do this for you not me, I'm here to support you. All I want is for you to have the happiness you deserve with a relationship with your father." He nods.
