Chapter 8 - Library (Part 2)
"Hey, you, this is my spot."
"Doesn't have your name on it."
"It does, right here. See?"
"Your name is Geg?"
"What, no! It's Edge you nin-compoop."
"And mine is Silica, yet you don't see me bragging about it."
"Yeah, whatever, can you just leave? This is my spot to go and be miserable at."
"Well, I want to be miserable here too."
"Fine, we can be miserable together."
"..."
"..."
"Why are you miserable?"
"I did something stupid and now my cousin is gone. Why are you miserable?"
"A friend of mine from school went missing and I can't find them. A human girl."
"She was probably kidnapped into the black market, maybe my cousin was too. He had low H.P."
"Maybe..."
"..."
"Do you want a smoke?"
"A smoke?"
"Cigarette. The good stuff."
"That stuff is bad for you."
"So is starvation, the King ain't giving a single sh*t."
"You're right there, and we can just use magic to heal ourselves up. Give me two."
"Pft, you're going to smoke two at once? Do you want to suffocate or something?"
"Can you suffocate with two cigarettes?"
"As if I know, I bought these things this morning. Just a spur moment of life, I guess."
"Half of the pack is gone."
"Misery hit me pretty hard."
~~~~~~
Well, the sugar crash hit Cross rather hard.
One moment, he was excitedly flipping through page after page of information about the power of a human soul, and the next he face planted into the pages, completely drained of energy. He groaned out of exhaustion, the sugar waves of fake energy draining from his bones in a single second.
"One of us is down, I repeat, one of us are down for the count!" Dream giggled, looking over at Cross.
"He was down for the count as soon as he took a bite of Blue's homemade food," Sci chuckled, "Where have you been?"
"Lost in this book," Dream said, holding up a fiction book.
"Uuuugggggghhhhhhh," Cross groaned, rubbing his skull slowly.
"Yeah, too much sugar does that to us skeletons buddy," Sci announced to him, "So, build an immunity like Blue has. And I've never seen that book before, what's it about?"
"It's about an group of girls that is trapped in a bunker, and the only things they share in common are that their all female and all have read one book," Dream said, "It's pretty good, so far. I read the first half of it at the castle and I was reading from where I had left off when I found it here."
"You aren't getting paid to sit around guys, get back to work," Sci said in his 'work voice', pushing up his glasses.
"I'm not getting paid though," Cross mumbled, "And I'm supposed to carry the useful books you guys get when you're done. So, I'm useless until you guys have found whatever you need."
"Well, that really depends on how fast we progress and what options there are on books in this library," Sci said, his white pupils glancing up at the servant, "There are multiple levels, and we'll have to check everyone of them. All the information we have is from Dream, which is that vampires could control their fangs in public with enough practice. He doesn't even know any weaknesses, which is a problem. So, we can be here throughout the night if we don't look through all of these books for any little thing that can helpful."
"But aren't you just checking the top floors?" Cross asked in exhaustion.
"I figured any vampire information would be on the more intellectual floors..." Dream said.
"Not exactly, vampires are considered rare and powerful, there could be a bunch of different stories for people to understand on different floors. So, all of them are going to be checked. Hence the reason us three are the only ones here."
"I think the reason why we're up here all alone is that people don't have access to the highest level but us, and no one likes reading," Dream said.
"You like reading, Dream, and I like reading as well," Sci said.
"And I don't mind it," Cross' voice was muffled by the pages of the book, since he didn't bother to lift his head anymore.
"I mean anyone else that has access to this level probably doesn't like reading," Dream said, "Sci made statistics that only 37.9% of people in power like to read."
"Exactly 37.9?" Cross asked, "No offense, but isn't that kinda an exact number?"
"Photographic memory," Dream said boredly, "That's how I got the jury position."
"Oh, sorry," Cross apologized, cursing at himself.
For only hanging out with Sans for a night, he was already not acting like his old, paranoid self. He was speaking up more, making his voice and opinion more clear. He was being true to his own personality.
He had never done that near people of power before.
He should make sure to control himself more.
Sure, Sans and Blue are nice and trustworthy enough for a pair of Jury members, but he wasn't sure about Dream and Sci. They seemed nice, but Sci and Dream had threatened the girl with getting her thrown into jail again, so it was best if he kept his mouth shut and his soul closed off near them.
So, that's what Cross did. He made sure he kept his jaws closed as he picked up his head, ignoring the exhaustion that washed over his bones in wave after wave, clenching the book with slow and suddenly heavy fingers as he started reading it again, this time more slowly to ensure he was reading everything and his mind actually processed it.
Gosh, he was tired.
~~~~~~
"Thanks honey," Lust said, sitting down in the seat Grillby had pulled out for him.
They were on the second to last floor from the top, not wanting to to all the way to the top, since all of that was mostly information. Lust had his eye sockets set on a certain series of books about a drama, which he was going to read while Grillby read his cooking books. They would probably do that for a few hours, then leave back to their home to get ready for their plans for that evening. They had dinner with their parents, a discussion over some political things with a few other rich people, then had to go do a buiessness talk about the banks, which all of them Grillby ran.
So, a usual day for them.
"I'll be looking in the cooking aisle," Grillby informed his wife.
"Ok, I'll stay here then," He said, waving goodbye.
Lust eagerly opened up his book, starting at the Prologue.
Oh how he loved this series.
Grillby had watched him for a bit before officially leaving, making sure Lust wouldn't feel lonely without him. If Lust was bored, he'd start to pick at his fingers until he bled, and with his low H.P, the fire monster didn't want him to accidently kill himself.
There were so many deaths in this Kingdom, it was ridiculous. Grillby didn't know the exact number, but he knew at least a hundred people died everyday there, not counting the ones who went missing. Sure, it was one of the most powerful and populated Kingdoms, but if this kept up, they'd all end up dead in ten, twenty, or thirty years.
There was no denying it, this Kingdom was dying.
The soil wasn't good enough to grow many crops anymore, so the King imported crops for the high classes while the lower ones starved, getting leftovers and small donations from the generous rich who didn't like how this was happening. While the lower classes were starving and vanishing, the upper classes were being found dusted, the numbers increasing to twice a month.
So, Grillby was being more cautious then usual.
He began double checking the locks and keys on all of the windows and doors, even telling the staff that if something had broken in, get Lust and lock him in with them so he'd stay safe.
Well, he wasn't always the best, always being too afraid of his parents to talk back or to take action. In his opinion, there was no saving the Kingdom. It was better just to burn the place down to the ground, all hope had been left years ago.
Maybe why much of their population have few Hope Points left.
"You gatta lift me higher, Blue," A voice said.
"The Magnificent Blue cannot become magically taller, try stretching your arm more!" Another voice said.
"Well, the lazy Sans never does work himself, and I used a lota magic at this morning's Judging, so I'm not ganna use any magic," The first voice spoke again.
Grillby walked into the next aisle over, looking in to see two skeletons, Sans and Blue, trying to get to a book on the highest shelf. Sans was on Blue's shoulders, lazily reaching his short arms all the way, but still not making it with double their height.
"Do you men need my help?" Grillby offered, since he was tall enough to grab the book.
"Yeah, that'd be pretty swell," Sans said.
Blue backed up with Sans still on his shoulders, letting the elemental monster reach up and grasp the item in his hands, bringing them down to hold out to for the skeletons. It was a plain dark blue case, no words printed on any side of it.
Blue set down Sans, who took the book with appreciation.
"Um, thanks..." Sans said shyly.
"No problem," Grillby said, smiling at Sans, who smiled back with a light blue blush on his bones.
"Well, I'll be heading back to my table now," Grillby said, rubbing the back of his neck, "Guess I'll see you around, huh?"
"Guess so," Sans said, giving a little wave to Grillby as he walked away.
Blue stood there as his eyes sparkled, a giant grin spreading across his face. Sans noticed his expression and paused.
"Don't you dare, Blue."
~~~~~~
"You're elbow is in my ribcage."
"And you're axe is against my neck, yet you don't hear me complaining about it."
The two vampires squirmed in their position, trying to get more comfortable. There was a small place they were hidden in, between two book shelfs, their bodies crammed against each other awkwardly. The reason was that they couldn't snatch a card for all five floors, so they had to sneak in through a window, and would get in huge trouble if they were caught.
So, hiding between two close bookshelves in the shadows was their best choice.
It was Horror and Nightmare, both of them struggling against the close constraints of the space. It wouldn't had been so bad if Nightmare hadn't had his tentacules, which were difficult to fit into a space like this.
Horror had a large hoke with jagged edges in his skull from a childhood accident, one which had almost taken his life. He was wearing a black hoodie with grey pants, both of them worn from the wear and tear of life. He had only one pupil in his left eye, which was a blood red color. To his back was strapped an axe, which he had loved dearly.
"Wait, what's that the Judge is holding?" Nightmare whispered, "It looks like the... Lost diary..."
Horror snapped his head towards where Nightmare was looking, his sharp teeth dropping from their grin almost immeadiatly.
Oh no.
Horror, in his first years as a vampire, had a diary in which he had written down everything. Their location, all of the vampires he had met, everything about him was confined in that one diary. Nightmare was the one who told him to get rid of it, so Horror did tossing it into a dumpster and leaving it.
So how did it end up here?
"I thought you threw that out!" Nightmare snapped at Horror.
"I did!" Horror whispered back, "But someone must've thought it was a lost book and gave it to the library, and they put it here. Oh no. Oh no no no."
"Yeah, oh no is right, we screwed up," Nightmare growled.
《》《》《》
I'm sooo tired from school already, and it just started.
Gosh school sucks.
But, I have am explanation to why so many skeletons are alived compared to other monsters! Basically, since skeletons can breed with their souls with any gender, they can reproduce more than other monsters. Not to mention skeletons don't freeze to death and can live longer without food, so they can survive longer. And being a skeleton is a dominate trait, so there's just alota skeletons compared to different monsters.
So, I don't know if I'll be able to slip in guarenteed chapters every other day, but I'll try. The main problem is that after school, I have to clean up a lot of my house since my siblings never do. So, I dunno yet, I might be sble to squeeze it in, but no guarentees.
And I know I haven't been drawing, I've just been getting ready for school. But don't worry, I have the never drawing done, just need to draw it.
AND STILL NO RULER, WHAT IS THIS WORLD.
