Chapter 47 - The Soul

Sometimes, Sci could hear it.

One moment he would be in his real, large lab, and would sense something. He could never fully feel it, or identify it, but it would sometimes be there. Even for a split second, he could just sense it.

But walking around certain parts of his real lab, he could sense it more and more. And sometimes it was a constant tune, singing in his ears. He didn't understand it, but he grew to ignore it. Sometimes, however, in a certain section of his lab it would grow so loud he'd have to stop and leave.

But he would never try to discover what it was.

Until today.

There were so many reasons for this. The first was, naturally Sci was afraid. Alphys had told him, before she left, that a certain section of the lab was off limits. Asgore, for once in his life, agreed with a women. He said, in a terrifying tone, not go to to the warned section of Sci's true lab. So Sci, valuing his life, never did.

But, the main trait of a scientist was curiosity.

Sci would've never stayed back forever.

Another reason that held him back was his busy life. He would constantly be working on a project, too absorbed into his work to really care. Then he had to deal with Asgore, and his friends too. Blue constantly desired attention, Sans usually got bored and stopped by to screw with Sci, and he was usually so distracted he pushed it to the back of his mind.

Of course, until today.

He was building one of the arms for his robot before a loud screech had pounded throughout his being, making him jump and drop the mechanical piece, it scattering to pieces among the ground. It only happened for a few seconds before it stopped, causing Sci to gulp a fresh amount of air to regain his senses.

What the heck?

That...

That wasn't like the other times he felt strange pulses down here.

Imagine if he had been dealing with chemicals while that happened...

The robot was only a one of his projects, another project of his was one that dealt with chemicals on rodents. He had another room full of hamsters and rats, all of them being tested on with chemicals that could potentially harm Sci. If that pulse had happened ealier, and he happened to drop one of those vials, he would have to press the panic button, shut down his real lab, and try to wash it off before any side effects occurred.

That's why he had to go find the cause of this problem at this point, it was becoming a safety hazard.

The section of the lab that was denied of his access was very obvious, with a large warning sign painted across the door sloppily. The door was old, compared to the rest of the lab, with shining silver doors and sturdy white walls. However, the door was made out of simple wood, and there were even a few stratches next to the door handle, which had been smashed by some intense force into a more like plate structure.

Asgore did not want Sci to get in.

Of course, like this little detail of the doorknob would stop Sci at this point. The threat of exile was much more terrifying to Sci than a missing doorknob.

With his magic bone that he summoned, he pushed it into the small crack between the wooden door and the concrete door frame, and started pulling the bone. He twisted it slightly as he pulled, willing his body strength, which wasn't much, and magic, which wasn't much either, to pull open the door.

Which reminds him, he needs to start exercising. Being cooped up in the same room isn't good for ones health while constantly drinking grape soda,

The door gave little resistance before swinging open, hitting Sci square in the face and making him smack down to the ground with a large thud before he could even react.

"Guh..." He groaned, rubbing his pounding skull.

That didn't go as planned.

He was a scientist for petes sake, how did he not see that coming?

Ignoring that interruption, he sat up and gazed through the now open wooden door, finding a dark hallway with dust sprinkling the ground. Not monster dust, thank the lord, but just plain old dust that collected on things not touched in years. The floor was simple wood, some of the boards chipped while others were tilted at different angles. There was a long scratch along the wall, too.

Something definitely went down in here.

Is that what Asgore was trying to hide?

The scientist didn't realize that he had stood up before his legs were carrying him down the hall, his curiosity bringing him forward. Perhaps he would die, like the curious cat from the old saying.

Curiosity killed the cat.

Sci hated that phrase, it didn't make any sense to him. Why would a cat be curious, of all animals? Cats, one spooked, run as fast as they can. He went to school with this one cat monster before, and when some girls gave him a good scare, he full on bolted out the door faster than they could even comprehend. So, why a cat?

And curiosity shouldn't kill anyone immeadiatly. Just because you're curious doesn't mean that you won't tame precautions. As a scientist, he was curious, yes, but it's not like he wouldn't act rationally. Safety measures were taken, he played things safe when the situation asked for it. That's why he made sure the King was busy all of today before he adventured into this unknown territory, and why he had a spare weapon shoved into his back pocket if anything went bad.

Sure, he had magic, but it was always best to have a back up plan if things went south.

Also, why was that a saying too? If things went South? If things went bad was a much better term. South is just a direction on a compass, South didn't indicate anything bad. It made no sense by most phrases, Sci had found.

Were they all created by the same drunk guy in the same bar in the exact same night?

Sci pushed up his glasses when he spotted another door, this one made much more firm and sturdy than the door before.

A back up door.

What's so important that Asgore had to keep it locked away like this, anyway?

This time, the door didn't have a cap between it and the wall, so the short skeleton couldn't reuse his same trick. It was also too thick to knock through with a bone attack, so another choice of action to gain entry was a preferable idea.

Good thing he was pretty good at lock picking.

One of his younger brothers would often lock his room door whenever he felt upset, so Sci had to learn pretty quickly how to pick his lock, instead of breaking down the door everytime and having to buy a new one. He could've always just removed the lock while his brother was at school, but then the child was have no protection if someone attacked his house on a weekend or a holiday from school. He could've also gone in through the window, but with his weak strength, he would've fallen and probably hurt something.

There was also the teleporting option, but it was usualy exhausting if he teleported too much. So the elder brother figured why not find a way to get in every time without exerting magic and also learning a skill that could become useful?

So here he was, using a small sharpened bone and a slightly longer one as he dug into the lock of the door, twisting and listening as he tried to crack open the door.

Bingo!

The click sounded in the silent hallway before the door creaked open slightly, it's hinges groaning in protest to the movement.

This door had been shut far longer than the first door, it seems.

Before Sci could push open the door, the wave he felt before suddenly screeched into his body, the sound and pulsing of this wave sending him to the ground once more, gripping his chest out of surprise and pain.

What...

Why was it directly affecting his soul?

This was seriously weird.

He waited for the wave to cease, which only took a second longer. The pain dulled until it wasn't there, and he stood up once more.

He had gotten knocked down twice in five minutes, nice job.

Behind this door was a small room, which he could barely make out in the darkness.

However, in some sort of glass container, in a corner of the room, there was something glowing.

Something hovering...

Glowing white...

His eye sockets widened as he took a step back, utter confusion and fear runnung through his bones as he realized what it was and who it belonged to.

A white soul.

A Boss Monsters soul.

There was only one other Boss Monster in the Kingdom besides the King.

This was Toriels soul.
