"We'll be starting tomorrow," Sans said, opening his room door, "But don't worry about it, you'll be staying in my room with me so you won't be killed in your sleep."
Cross thanked the Judge, setting down his small bag of belongings on the seat. It wasn't filled with much, only a few packed away few items, few clothes, and a bottle of water. Since his old Boss had died, their house had been bought by another wealthy person who wasn't interested in keeping the servents of that house,so they were all fired. And since they were fired, that meant they had nowhere to live, since all servants often live at their work place.
This was very lucky, considering that he had just lost his home and had spent the night in the street with a few other servants.
The room was large, and looked like it should for a Judge, the second title to the King himself. The walls were a light blue, the floor a lush whote carpet. There was a alrge couch next to a fire place, which Sans was refilling with fire wood (a servants job, but Cross respected Sans for doing it himself). Sans, unlike what Cross had overheard about the Jury members sharing a kitchen, he had a whole kitchen in his room filled to the bring with different kinds of foods that Cross had only heard of. The bathroom to the side was large and polished perfectly, even the bottled were arranged to perfection. The bed was large and fluffy, with at least ten pillows organized on it. The blankets were smoothed out as well.
It just didn't seem like it was Sans' room.
Everything was too clean for him. Sure, it was color themed to him, but that was about it. It didn't have any personal touch of Sans himself. If Sans hadn't told Cross that this was his room, he would've been convinced that it was a guest bedroom. It was too empty of personal belongings. Not even a single picture was on a wall.
If Sans just didn't have the extra time to decorate it, or didn't feel like decorating it, was the two possibilities that Cross had narrowed it down to.
"Asgore will probably be angry if he finds out that I'm having you stay in my room, so hide your bag under the bed or somethin' like that," Sans yawned, opening the cabinets in the kitchen.
"Does the King come into your room while you're not here?" Cross asked in confusion.
"Not really, he likes it when I'm in here. But other people clean it up, and if they find out, they'd definitely report it to him," Sans said, "And then you'd probably be kicked out. He hates it when others are here at night."
"That explains why it's so..." Cross trailed off.
"Disgustingly clean?" Sans asked, "Yeah, since we have a extremely certain schedule with clothes, their my only free reign to messiness. I have to express myself somehow, no?"
"Yeah," Cross said, shoving his bag underneath the bed.
"Want some rare and unique food from the tropical islands south?" Sans asked as he peered into the fridge, "Asgore imports all of these different foods from around the world and expects us to try them all, this week it's the tropical islands."
"Are you sure, isn't that stuff for royalty?"
"If you ain't gann' eat it, I'd end up throwing it away. And who gives a crap about titles, you're still a hungry skeleton who's bones look a little thin and worn. How about a glass of milk and some island food? I can figure put how to cook it."
"I don't mind helping you cook," Cross offered, stepping into the kitchen.
"Sure, I have no idea how to any way, I usually just throw a bunch of ketchup onto something and call it a night, but I doubt tha' you would like that."
"We all have our obsessions for food options, I guess," Cross chuckled, approaching the stove, "But I did some cooking as well as cleaning, I can make a mean meal every once in awhile."
"Heh, sounds like a good deal to me,' Sans said, tossing Cross a mixing spoon.
~~~~~~
Cross had never felt so happy doing a chore in his life.
He had so much fun he had forgotten that he was doing another one of his chores he had usually done. Sure, he's cooked plenty in his life, but Sans and his puns distracted him from thinking that it wasn't even a chore.
They had messed around, making jokes and throwing random ingredients at each other. At first, Cross was hesitant about doing anything that could get him in trouble, but Sans didn't even act like a judge, more like a chill older brother who just wanted to spend time with his sibling. And Cross warmed up to him rather quickly, adding in on the jokes and screwing around. Soon, the kitchen was a little bit messy as they distributed the food out onto two plates for themselves.
"It's unusual for people of your status to be eating at such a small table," Cross said, sitting down across from Sans.
"I would like to eat under the stars, but Asgore doesn't let me leave the castle much," Sans sighed, "So I got a small table and pushed it against the window so I can open it and admire the stars."
"It does feel nice with the window open," Cross said, glancing over at the dark shadows of the outdoors, swearing he saw something dart out of view.
However, that must've been impossible.
They were on the fourth floor after all.
No one could be out there.
"And I want to apologize about earlier, with the whole servant thing," Sans said, drawing Cross' attention back to him, "He's usually more discreet about it, but when I'm around it seems like he's trying to impress me."
"He really likes you, huh?" Cross asked, "Why don't you just go out with him?"
"I don't go out with self-centered pricks that only want to date me for my money and influence," Sans said, "If a guy who wanted you for, let's say to get more famous, would you?"
"No, I wouldn't," Cross agreed, "But if he bothers you so much, why don't you leave?"
"I can't, I have no one to go to, no where to go. This is the only plave I can be right now living with a good pay and roof above my head. Not to mention Asgore would probably make me a wanted criminal with false evidence."
"Would he actually do that?"
"Have you ever heard of anyone retiring from a position of power?"
Cross thought about it for a moment, pausing as he realized someone. This was actually a correct detail he had never noticed. Everyone that was worked near Asgore had never quit or retired. They were either dusted or were accused of working with the enemies and hunted down by the Royal Guard.
How did he never notice?
"But what about your family, Sans?"
"An illness took his soul when he eas a mere little bones. He was so small... So fragile... I should've known he wouldn't last past age ten."
Cross nodded in understanding at the grieving skeleton. Losing a sibling was the worst, which most people were aware of. Due to the illnesses and vampires that plauged their lands, along with the King who always assured that things would get better but never tried to make them better, most families lost a child before the age of ten at most. If a Mother could bear children into the Kingdom, one of them was bound to die. It was sad, but it was the facts.
"At least I'm not the only one here, who's lost someone," Sans said, "Dream's bro went missing one night, probably why he was so eager to go looking for the vampires. Edge's cousin went missing too, and Sci tried to save his little brother from a fire and he died, too. It's nice knowing that I have people to talk to, at least."
"Was your brother caught in the plague?" Cross asked, "The one of '23?"
The plague of '23 was one of the worst known plagues for their kingdom. It was swept around like a forest fire, killing off a third of the population before finally ending with cures from another Kingdom. Many people had been left weeping in the aftermath of its effects.
"No, that's what killed my parents off," Sans said, picking at his food, "We didn't have enough money to pay for his medicine, he ended up dusting while I was in school. I wish I had been by his side when it happened... He died all alone... What kind of brother was I?"
"It's not your fault, Sans," Cross spoke softly.
"I know," Sans said, "I know."
"I lost my whole family to the Plague of '23, y'know."
"You got hit pretty bad, huh?"
"Yeah, I lived because my Dad sold me off to some guy as a worker. Kinda happy that he did, his jerkness was the reason I lived. I just wish my best friend, Xrus, came with me. He always knew what to do. But I don't know what happened to him."
"At least your here, you made it," Sans pointed out, "That's what keeps me going. Paps wouldn't have wanted me to waste my life grieving the whole time, he woukd want me to help people. That's probably why I used my powers to become the Judge, to protect the Innocent."
"That's a good thing to have to keep you going, I have no motivation," Cross said, biting off a chunk of food from his fork, "I just have the fear of death keeping me alive."
"Nothing to be ashamed about," Sans said, pushing away his plate, "But all of the sap talk is making me too miserable to go to bed, we should just sleep."
"That sounds good to me."
Yay, another chapter out and on time!
Still waiting for that ruler😥. That comic is actually going to play more into later stories than you think, so I want to get it right. Also, the Sans being an experiment comic is going to be dropped, since I saw a hand plates comic and was like "Whoops, what I was planning looks a lot like dis"
I saw this one little art online, where in the universe, the Judge is a big deal and basically is like the elder person who names the monsters and is super duper powerful and mysterious. So, I wanted to put a little spin on it, my version of how it would go. Obviously, this book and my drawings would be first, but it would be the side project I usually do. Like, the AlterTale book was a side project I did when everything else was done, and the Yandere Papyrus was as well. But I wouldn't write it all before uploading it, I'd write when I can, upload it as soon as I'm done, and there'd be no consistent updates. I had started the book draft awhile ago, and I barely have even a 100 words right now, but I like to have side projects that help me keep my mind in a constant creative vibe, and it'd let me create more drawings. So, keep a lookout. But don't worry, I will only write it whenever the next chapter for this is 100% done! At first, the drawings were a side project, but they aren't side-projecty enough, if that makes sense. So, there'd be BIG gaps between updates, since I keep my priorities straight. It's only for my free time when this is on schedule, I have my drawing out, and worked good enough on my comic.
