Chapter 1 - The Test

"Did you stay up all night again?"

The voice was soft, making a tired Dream look up from his desk. He had dark circles under his eye sockets, his clothes crumpled. He was taller then when he was a child, with formal golden robes wrinkled from his night full of work with no breaks.

He haf been napping on thr desk before he sat up, a page sticking to his arm bones as he shifted in his seat, blinking a few times as he took in his surroundings. He had a few ink marks on his hands, dry from them being there hours ago. There were papers scattered around the desk, a few of them drifting to the floor as he straightened.

Why was he...

Oh, right, he had fallen asleep trying to do his paperwork.

This wasn't the first time he had done it. He often stayed up to get ahead on his paperwork, so he could have a day or two off. On those days, he would go out and try to look for his long lost brother, who had vanished years ago on a stormy night. He would go around, using his memory to ask anyone of they had seen the skeleton.

No one had.

But, more recently, he had started to do more narrowing searches. Since his brother was a vampire, and there was no known way to turn a vampire back into a normal monster or human, so that meant he was still a vampire as of now. So, he started using his free time to study vampires more, learning that their information was rather scarce compared to what he knew. They didn't even know that vampires could eat animals! All they knew was that vampires drained energy and that they had fangs.

Just wow.

So, with no help from anyone else, Dream had to go off of what he knew about vampires, which he hadn't told anyone about. Only a few of his close friends knew he had known a vampire for the first years of his life, so he didn't feel comfortable disclosing the information he did know about them. Which wasn't much.

The only thing that was helping him was that he had a photographic memory.

Which was how he had become a member of the Jury for the King himself.

Speaking of which, there was another member of the jury shaking his shoulder to wake him up, thr one that had spoke.

He was the same height as the now awake Dream, with a star pupil in his left socket and a normal blue pupil in his right eye socket. He was wearing a long brown scarf that became tan at the bottom, which brushed the floor when he walked. He was wearing a different set of robes, which were a dark brown with blue lines running through them randomly.

"Dream, I thought you already did all of your work. Why are you staying up again?" His fellow jury member asked, his left pupil transforming into a question mark after he blinked, "It's not good for your health."

"Sorry, Ink," He groggily replied, rubbing at his face, "I did, I was just..."

"Looking for more vampire information again and list track of time?" Ink finished his sentence.

"Yeah," Dream said, "Sorry."

"It's not my preformance that is hindered by this, so I don't care, that means I can eat more cake since you'll be more slow," Ink said, trying to lighten the mood, "But you should get up now, we have to carry on the case from Yesterday. The one about the monster dust."

"Oh, right," Dream groaned, pulling off the stray piece of paper off of his elbow.

"Sci is going to run the calculations today, he brought in his stuff," Ink said.

"I'm going to fall asleep when he's talking then," Dream groaned, trying to shuffle the papers into one pilr.

"Don't be mean about Sci, he's fun to hang out with," Ink said, leaning over the desk to help his friend organize it.

"Outside of work," Dream pointed out, "Inside of work, he gets into his monotonous voice and only focuses on work. It's so boring."

"That I can agree with," Ink said, handing him the paper stack, "But you're lucky that I decided to wake you up, since we're actually about to start in two minutes."

"Two minutes!" Dream screeched.

He practically flung himself out of his seat, it clattering to the floor as he dove to his dresser. In a flash, he was pulling his ribcage halfway out of the robe before he got tangled in the thick clothes, falling to the floor with a grunt as he wiggled around on the carpet floor like a fish caught in a net.

"I lied, we actually start in an hour," Ink said.

"Ink, what the heck?" Dream asked, his voice muffled through the cloth.

"I didn't take my medication yet, so I don't really care," Ink said.

"Go," Dream said, pausing as he used his untangled arm to point at the door, "Go take your medication. You know how you get when you don't take them."

"Yeah, see you later," Ink said, waving goodbye, "But Blue wanted me to get revenge on you for eating pop tart stash. He asked me to wait to take my meds until I got revenge for him."

"Strawberry pop tarts are delicious," Dream yelled.

"Tell that to him," Ink said, "And make sure to bring those papers, I didn't organize them either."

"Nooooo!" Dream yelled in defeat from his cucoon of fabric.

~~~~~~
"Blue, you know how much he hates being in a hurry," Ink said, leaning back in his seat as he drank down a small vial of glowing red liquid.
"Nonsense, a good head start to a day is what Magnificant people like me do every morning!"
This other skeleton was shorter than Ink, a pink apron arapped around his figure securely. He wasn't in his formal robes, instead he was wearing a simple plain blue shirt with plain black sweatpants. He only wore his formal robes right when he was about to leave to work, especially not when he was cooking.
Cooking was Blue's time, not anyone else's.
His blue star pupils looked up from the pan to Ink, flipping the poptart themed pancake over onto it's other side. It was just basic pancake batter, only with crumbled up pop tarts sprinkled throughout them, making them a combination of two foods. It was one of his favorite breakfasts, he ate it on special occasions.
And since he considered a friend working with him a special occasion, he made them that morning.
"We're going to get diabetes if you keep feeding us your poptart pancakes," Ink laughed.
"That's the awesome thing about being a skeleton!" Blue squealed, carving a happy face into the breakfast item with a small knife, "We can't be overloaded on sugar!"
"We can still have sugar rushes," Ink pointed out.
"Nah," Blue waved him off, "Did you take your weekly medication yet?"
"Just did," Ink said, watching as Blue turned off the oven after making a fourth pancake, "Did Geno leave earlier than usual again?
"No, the Captain kept him later than usual, he's still sleeping," Blue said.
The good thing about working close to the King was that they all lived in the same quarters. Each of the Jury, and a few other high positions, were allowed to live in this section of the castle itself. And Blue, being the nice person he was, invited the people from the nearby rooms in every morning to eat breakfast with him, him cooking for them. Only Ink and Geno, another skeleton that was the Minister of War, were the ones to come over, since Blue ate sugar in every meal he made.
It drove away most of people from eating his meals, but a few select of people could handle the intense sugar onslaught on their tongues. Those two people were Geno and Ink. That doesn't mean their his only two friends, just that their the only two that came over for breakfast.
"Did you break into his room again just to see?" Ink asked, picking up his plate of two pancakes.
"Why would I waste my skills at lock picking?" Blue asked, "Also, do you like the paintbrush I added on?"
"It's not a straight line, but it's still good," Ink commented, "By the way, Dream had the half eaten box in his room still."
"He has leftovers?" Blue gasped, turning towards the door and practically sprinting down the hall to his room, "DREAM! I WANT THISE LEFTOVERS!"
~~~~~~

Dream sighed as he sat down at his seat at the round table of the jury, patting down his files. Of course he was late, he was too busy getting untangled from his dirty uniform to notice the time. Not only was he late, he had missed his time breakfast, he had also lost a couple of very important files when organizing.

So, this wasn't very good.

Boy did he hate organizing stuff, he was never good at it.

They had picked up from yesterday, discussing new ideas that they had thought of overnight. Apparently, one if their main suspects had lied about what he had saw, so they were going to have to deal with him as well after solving this case, which might be involved with a vampire. Today, it seems that Dream had gotten lucky, and they all came to one final conclusion shortly after lunch time.

So he had the rest of the day for himself.

Originally, Dream was going to spend it looking at more information alone, but Blue had insisted that they should go to Sci's lab, since he too was trying to study vampires. He didn't mind spending time with Blue and Ink during work, but Sci put on this work facade and would ignore everything else. Sure, he was effective, but he wasn't his true self.

Sci was another skeleton monster, short with a lab coat that would drag behind him when walking. He always had glasses taped to his skull, which constantly slid down, requiring quiet a lot of tape to keep up. You couldn't see under the lab coat, since it was buttoned up, but he was probably wearing another one of his green turtle necks.

He never wore anything else, ever.

Well, unless his job said so, then he'd probably change.

He was way too obsessed with his job.

"He hasn't even looked up since I sat down!" Dream said, tapping his pencil against the table.

"I do admit, Sci does get very invested into his work," Ink said, "I know you hate it when people ignore you, but Sci doesn't do it in purpose."

"Neither did those people who overlooked two homeless children," Dream muttered.

"I bet he wouldn't even notice if we switched his Cola to my Pepsi," Ink said, holding up his soda can, "Don't take it personally."

"Wait, would he notice?" Blue asked.

The three jury skeletons took a glance over at the Royal Scientist, who was hunched over his desk as he worked, not even paying attention to their conversation.

"Let's go find out," Ink offered, standing up.

He walked over silently, grabbing the open can of Cola and switching it to his emptier can of Pepsi. Sci didn't even take notice of his actions, so Ink rushed back to the others before they broke out into a giggling fit when Sci had taken a large gulp and didn't notice.

"He didn't notice," Dream snorted, "Never mind, this isn't upsetting, it's now hilarious!"

"Anyone wondering how much we can do without him noticing?" Blue asked.

"Yes!" Both Dream and Ink giggled.

First, they had switched his pencil for a pen while Blue ran off to go get some things, which he didn't notice whatsoever. When Blue came back, they switched his soda for a water, which he didn't even notice either.

They then went further and got a language book, since Sci could speak German and French, and slowly made out a scientific question from the words it translated. He failed to notice his friends speaking in a different language, and answered the question in English.

They were halfway through trapping Sci in a box of cardboard boxes before the King had walked in, making them all freeze. The King was a nice man, but he didn't appreciate when people screwed around when working.

And this definitely was considered screwing around.

He was tall and bulky, with an outfit made out of the best of silk. A crown rested on his white fur covered head, his red eyes glancing over the scene coldly.

Oh, he didn't look happy.

Oh no.

"King Asgore!" The three members of the Jury said, quickly turning and bowing to him respectfully.

"King Asgore, welcome!" Sci said, pausing when he saw the half built fort surrounding him and the annoyed look on the King's face, "Guys!"

"All four of you," He said briskly, turning around, "With me, to my Office, now."
