Sentence Structure

We're going to start with the basics; it won't take too much of your time, I promise.

To tell the time or start a thought in a sentence, always use commas. Commas can be used for many different things, for instance, a list. The introduction of a new character. Like so:

"My brother, Jonathan, is six-foot-nine!"

"While you're out would you grab some bread, cheese, and eggs?"

"'Firstly, I never said that.'"

The next is quotation marks. I've noticed a lot in other cultures that quotation marks vary from place to place, for instance, Cyrillic has those weird '<<' things. In American English, we use this "

If you write in fluent English you probably already know that this guy " always needs another one of them to finish a thought. So, allow me to explain some stuff.

When a character is talking, you use quotation marks like so:

"Jeremy yanked my hair and I almost hit him."

When someone is speaking but is repeating something someone said, it is written like this:

"So I said, 'Jeremy, get your nasty hands off of me, I don't wanna be near you!' and he replied, 'Wow, you're so rude.'"

When a word is used sarcastically or ironically but not in conversation, you use these beautiful boys:

In a world of pure imagination, insane is the 'normal' standard.

When the story has a written flashback, changes perspectives for a long but not permanent amount of time, or has a very long monologue, our " buddy doesn't need an ending until the entire thought is finished. A good example of literature using this is classic stories. It is also very popular with poetry.

Sentences should not use imaginative or describing words more than once. Another rule of thumb is that you should probably not use that same word in the sentence right after that. If you're writing on your computer/tablet, you should probably just bookmark www.thesaurus.com

When writing something along the lines of "Addison, my friend and ___" the place in the sentence matters. If it's at the end of a sentence (at least halfway through) then the missing word should be "I," and when it's at the beginning of a sentence, it should be "me."

To close a sentence, always make sure to use punctuation. Periods end thoughts with a more neutral or final tone. Exclamation points are excitement or anger, and question marks are...well, questions.
