TV Shows, not Animation

The newest contest seems simple enough, but it actually isn't.

I'm going to start off by saying the judges haven't defined what they mean by TV fandom, and there are questions as to whether Cartoon and Anime fandoms are allowed, as they have aired on television. The problem is, that's actually not how TV fandom is defined in the fanfiction community. Instead, TV fandoms are defined as "serialized live-action series". In particular, the series needs to also be fictional, not non-fiction based. A few people may be miffed, but there is actually a good reason why they can't allow cartoons and Anime in.

1. Not all Anime fandoms actually aired on television. The term "OVA" stands for "original video animation", meaning the series was released via video rather than being released on television. Some Anime series end on television, but others do not.

2. Most Anime series are based off a pre-existing work such as a Manga or a Light Novel, nor do these series diverge from the plot. Thus, unless series the Anime is based off has also come to an end, there is no guessing "what happens next" in the series.

3. Most cartoons are episodic in nature, meaning they don't have a plot running through the entire series. Thus, there can't be any "what happens next" for these series either.

4, If one were to define TV fandoms as "series which aired on television", one would need to leave out series like Orange is the New Black, and Behind the Mask which are TV shows which air through alternative streaming means, as none of these series actually "aired" on television, and yet they count as TV shows.

5. If one was counting any show which airs on television, they would have to include all reality TV series. While some reality shows have a what if factor to them, like Keeping Up with the Kardashians, others like Cupcake Wars, Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars, The Amazing Race, etc. - there is no real "what happens next". Well, you could tell what happens to the stars once they get home, but that actually missed the entire point of the theme for this contest.

This particular challenge is asking for writers to do a theoretical piece about what would happen next on the show. On top of this, the contest is about tiding things over due to shows ending either at a cliff hanger or not getting a new season. For this contest, you need something which has some kind of end, whether it be a season finale or a series, finale, but - also isn't a form of animation or reality TV.

And no, the goal isn't to rewrite the season or series finale if you didn't like it. For those of you who like OC pairings, that's going to be a no-go unless you're talking about a canon character who isn't already paired up, or an OC being used as a love triangle where the OC doesn't succeed.

As for what to write, writing what happens next may seem easy, but you've got to really think outside of the box on this one. This though is going to make picking a series hard, because it has to be one that you enjoy thinking about what happens next.

Note: If I thought Anime, Cartoons, and Reality TV were allowed, I would personally pick Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet for this contest. Also, keep in mind - the judges do use terms they know people in fandom may or may not be familiar with. For example, some people think the term OTP means "favorite pairing" when it does not. Fictional fandoms are classified not by where they aired, but by the format they're in.

This said I don't think the judges are going to be specific regarding the difference between TV shows, and Asian Drama, as they would also need to nix any show in a foreign language, and the same goes for Cartoons and Anime. That said, it may still be a risk to do Asian Drama as it does tend to get its separate category, but at this point I'm leaning towards an Asian TV fandom. Specifically, though, the categorization for fictional fandoms is based on the format the series is done in, not when and where it aired.

Edit: One of the admins confirmed, if you can watch it on television, it counts, so I asked a question about Netflix and Hula based series, as they're supposed to be the new broadcast alternative to regular and cable broadcasting. That said, what does this mean?

Edit 2: One of the ambassadors has also confirmed Netflix and Hula based series are allowed as well. This means anything which, first, you can watch on television, and second, is seasonal based is fair game. So what does this mean?

I really thought the contest would be hard as the fandoms one could use would be very limited, but I'm glad to find out this wouldn't be the case. (Hey, even I was not sure what I would do, but now I've got quite a few options.)

1. This does not, however, mean you can write about any YouTuber, just the YouTube Red shows.

2. The series in question is episodic, meaning there is no "what happens next" for the plot. This means there is no plot running through the entire season, and that plots are confined to individual seasons. This, however, would mean not using shows like I Dream of Jeannie which is episodic in nature, which means any "next episode" you should write could just as easily be part of an already existing season.

3. Avoid series which are ahead in some manner. For example, many Anime are adaptions of already existing material, and this material is already generally known, so people know where one is going already. For some Anime series, the existing material is not easily available because it's adapted from a Light Novel, or from an unknown Manga which is hard to come by. This also means though avoiding series where you only have the earlier seasons available, but later ones exist. Netflix, for example, has the first season of The Mysteries of Laura, but not the second. Some Anime only have some seasons translated into English, and others which are not, like Detective Conan. (Although, said series is also episodic in nature, and not a good series to work with for the contest.)

4. Sometimes an adapted series will go AU, like in regards to Game of Thrones. This is however not an excuse to prevent the character you did not wish to die from dying.
