A Light To Call Home
by Julia Brennan
Percy Jackson
Percy ducked as a monster tried to tear him apart with its claws. Percy swiped at him with his sword. The battle field was painted red. Screams filled the air as demigods fell. Percy did his best to block it out. Knowing it wouldn't do any good. That he would wake up screaming from nightmare about today. If he made it to tonight. And he would blame himself like he always did. Because it was hard not to. They were so young. And yeah, he was too, but they had their whole lives ahead of them! It wasn't fair that because of their parentage they were doomed to die young! But life wasn't fair. And there was nothing that Percy could do about it. He would fight his hardest and hope that at the end of the day there would be enough campers to fight another day. An explosion sounded in the distance and Percy resisted the urge to turn around and look, distraction would end in death. He kept fighting. He wouldn't stop. He couldn't. He turned slightly. There was his Wise Girl. She was beautiful even covered in blood and dirt and monster dust. They had gone through Tartarus together and had the scars to prove it. He still woke up screaming from nightmares. And he knew she did too. Sometimes he wanted to lay down and just not get up. To give up. But he couldn't do that. His mind wouldn't let him. He was on autopilot most of the time. Hiding his quickly deteriorating mental health behind his smiles and jokes. But he would keep fighting. Because he couldn't stop. Not while he was still alive and able to protect those around him. He would fight for them. Until he found the strength to fight for himself. Until then the monster's would face the sharp edge of Riptide. Because the camp was family. Each camper was like a sibling. And Percy would always fight for his family. For his home. Because that's what camp was. His home. Full of the people he loved. Full of family. And they would give him strength to keep fighting. And no matter what happened, no matter all the scars that he carried, or how lost he felt at times, he would fight until his last dying breath for his crazy mixed up family. His home, his light.
