A Peculiar Day

This is Who We Are

Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Emma was in the kitchen helping make breakfast for the kids when she heard a voice coming from the other room. She went to see who it was only to see Jacob singing while he cleaned up the other room. The younger kids had had a slumber party the night before and had made a huge mess. She stopped in the doorway to listen.

Play music

Up in the morning,
Up in the evening,
Picking down talks when the birds get back to me.
Oh, to me.

Emma recognized the song and couldn't help smiling. She hadn't known what a good voice Jacob had.

Up on the mountain,
Down in the king's lair,
Pushing these boxes in the heat of the afternoon.
Oh, afternoon.

He looked up spotting her in the doorway. His eyes widened but she motioned for him to continue singing along with him.

We were never welcome here,
We were never welcome here at all.
No.

It was true. The peculiars had never been truly accepted. Sure in the old days they were treated as gods but now they were only looked at as monsters. All they really wanted was to be accepted like everyone else.

It's who we are.
Doesn't matter if we've gone too far.
Doesn't matter if it's all okay.
Doesn't matter if it's not our day.

They would keep living their lives refusing to believe the lies that said that they were monsters.

Save us,
What we are,
Don't look clear,
It's all uphill from here.
Ooh.

Ms. Peregrine was a great help. Taking care of the peculiars and encouraging them to be themselves.

Up in the attic,
Down in the cellar,
Lost in a static,
Coming back for more.
Oh, for more.

By now other children had come into the room and were listening as she and Jacob sang. They all knew what it felt like to be rejected.

Out with the reason,
In with the season,
Taking down names in my book of jealousy.
Jealousy.

It was true sometimes she envied being normal but looking at Jacob she knew that she would never trade this for anything.

We were never welcome here.
We were never welcome here at all.
No.

The rest of the children were smiling sadly each remembering their own experiences in the outside world.

It's who we are.
Doesn't matter if we've gone too far.
Doesn't matter if it's all okay.
Doesn't matter if it's not our day.

Because it's who we are.
Doesn't matter if we've gone too far.
Doesn't matter if it's all okay.
Doesn't matter if it's not our day.

This crazy world had brought them all together. And even when the world rejected them they had formed their own family.

Save us,
What we are,
Don't look clear,
It's all uphill from here.
Ooh.

They all knew their lives wouldn't be easy but they had each other and Ms. Peregrine.

They say we're crazy.
They say we're crazy.
They say we're crazy.
They say we're crazy.
They say we're crazy.
They say we're crazy.
They say we're crazy.
They say we're, crazy.

But their lives were crazy. Emma remembered the adventures they had been on and smiled. It had been scary but they had made it.

By now the rest of the kids were smiling some of them singing along and dancing. Emma smiled.

Why won't you save us,
What we are,
Don't look clear,
It's all uphill from here.
Ooh.

Emma looked at Jacob who was also smiling. She looked at the rest of the kids who were laughing and smiling. She wouldn't trade this family for anything.
