Way You Look Tonight
(Wait, don't play the song yet. I'll tell you when, trust me -Tea.)
Remus had been gone for weeks. Tonks stayed up most nights, waiting for him, but he never came. Now the late night hot chocolates had become her latest habit. She'd given up hoping he'd come back for her, she just hoped he'd come back and explained why. That was all she wanted now.
He had just simply left one night; they had gone to sleep side by side, and by the next morning, he had gone with only a small note saying 'see you soon'. The problem was, 'soon' hasn't got a specific time to it. Soon could mean an hour, seven hours, or as it now had become clear to her, 'soon' seemed to mean five weeks and still counting.
"Looks like it's just you and me still." Tonks said sadly, her hand over her slightly larger belly. Her baby bump wasn't big, not even close to what it will be, but it was in the early stages of forming and therefore noticeable on her slender figure.
Five minutes passed, the hot chocolate had gone cold, but Tonks didn't go back to bed. She wasn't tired, like every other night, so she would sit, and stare outside, observing what little was happening beyond the window.
Suddenly, the front door opened with a soft click. Turning her head towards the open door leading to the hallway, she saw a shadow moving towards her. Panic did flow through her, but she had her wand in her slipper, her hand slowly moving to get it. But the shadow moved into the light, seeing their face made Tonks freeze; it was Remus. He'd come back. He looked a mess though; unshaven beard, hair tangled and greyer than usual, his scars more visible on his pale face, and his clothes looked unwashed.
"Hi." He said quietly, awkwardly half waving at her.
Admittedly, Tonks had had fantasies about the moment he'd return. She thought about how she would drop whatever she was holding to run and jump romantically into his arms while not falling over for once. How she would say that she loved him, missed him. And all was forgiven with a simple kiss that would last longer than humanly, or wizardly, possible. That, however didn't happen; nothing was dropped, she didn't successfully run towards him and be embraced like the parted lovers had been. No, Tonks just sat their, staring at him with curiosity, studying him as he stood awkwardly and unsettled in the doorway.
"Tonks? Are you okay?" Remus asked.
That snapped Tonks out of her dream. Was she okay? If by okay you mean mad, confused, tired, sore, sad, happy, worried and angry, then yes, she was okay. But she didn't know what to reply with. Remus wanted her to say she was fine and glad he was back, but Tonks wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of knowing how glad she was. But what to say?
"Where have you been?" she asked. Good starting point.
"I've been away." He replied.
"That's quite evident." Tonks said bitterly, standing up and crossing her arms as she faces him, her hair slowly turning redder and redder. "You just left, while I was asleep, without even an explanation as to why you were leaving and when you'd return."
"I'm sorry. Look, I just had to clear my head-"
"And you couldn't have told me?"
"I was scared."
"Of what? That I might yell at you, like I am now? There's a war going on, Remus, a very dark war. People die or go missing and their families never see them again. You were scared? I was scared that something bad had happened to you, and I wouldn't know because I had no idea where you were and what you were doing." Tonks yelled, her eyes filling up with tears. "What if you'd died? What then?" All anger instantly turned to sadness as she remember the things she had thought, all the terrible situations that could have happened to him.
Remus didn't say anything, neither did Tonks. She sat back down on the chair at the table, staring sadly out the window. It was clear to him that he could never truly fix it. It wasn't as if he had done many things wrong, but he knew how secure and safe she needs to feel, and he broke that between then already. Sighing, Remus flicked his wand in the direction of the radio, turning it on. A slow, calming song came on, Remus smiled; he knew it well.
(Start the song now.)
Walking up to where Tonks was sitting, Remus held his hand out for her to take. She ignored it at first, but soon gave into temptation and took it. He pulled her up to her feet gently, guiding her round the chair, they started to dance. It was a slow, improvised dance, but Tonks couldn't help but smile at how incredibly cheesy but romantic it was. Their dancing slowed down, and soon they were just standing in the middle of the kitchen, holding onto one another, their heads on each other's shoulders.
The song ended and they stayed like that for a few moments. Remus looked down to see her looking back at him. He leaned down slowly to kiss her, but she stopped him, and moved out of his embrace.
"Don't. Please." She said quietly. "Don't."
"Why not?" Remus asked.
"A flick of your wand and a romantic dance doesn't change anything Remus." Tonks sighed. "This isn't like in the movies."
"I know that. I'm sorry I left without saying anything, but everything was reminding me how it was the last time with James and Lily. The similarities right now are scary." Remus said. "It just got too much."
Tonks looked down at the ground and sighed; he was telling the truth, that was clear from the pain in his eyes, and it was also true that she had forgiven him a bit. But not trusting him just yet.
"You'll stay?" Tonks asked. "Properly?"
"Yes, I'm staying." Remus said, hugging her. "I love you."
"Love you too."
