The Lonely Man
Christmas in 1981 was a lonely time for Remus Lupin. Three of his best friends were dead, and his other friend had caused it. He was completely alone.
He walked along the middle of the snowy road, hands in pockets, head down. The snow crunched beneath his feet, it was the only sound there was. Remus had just entered the cemetery when he heard the large clock chime for eleven pm.
Walking down the rows and rows of white stone graves, he thought about the people beneath them, wondering about what their life had been like. What their hopes and dreams had been.
He soon located James and Lily's grave, when he saw that someone was already standing there; it was a man, wearing a long black cloak and a black top hat. His head was bowed, looking down at the grave before him. Remus felt like he knew this man, but he wasn't sure.
"Dumbledore?" Remus asked, his breath coming out in a faint mist.
"No, not Dumbledore." The man said. He turned to face Remus, but he still wasn't familiar.
"Who are you?" Remus asked, edging forward, hand on his wand just in case.
"I'm The Doctor." The man said, a slight smile on his lips.
"The Doctor? Doctor who?"
The man laughed. "Just the Doctor."
Remus frowned; something had clicked in the back of his mind. He remembered James mentioning someone called 'The Doctor'. He took James and Lily on wonderful adventures through time and space. Not like Remus believed them, that was impossible.
"The Doctor? The man James and Lily met." Remus said. "The one that took them on adventures through time and space."
"Yes. That's me." the Doctor said, waving.
"But, that's impossible!" Remus cried. "You're not real. Just a character from a drunk night."
"I can assure you I'm very real." The Doctor said.
"No, no this can't be happening." Remus cried, tears forming in his eyes. "This is impossible."
"It's not impossible. I can show you."
"What?"
"I can show you that it is possible to travel in space. Come with me." The doctor said, smiling.
"I can't. I need to stay here, get a job."
"Time travel. I could bring you right back here, be like you never left."
Remus hesitated; he never met the man before. But he claimed to know Lily and James.
"No. I can't." Remus said. "I belong in this time."
"Okay. Well, I should be going, people to see." The Doctor said. "It was nice meeting you."
The Doctor walked past Remus, adjusting his hat to block out the falling snow. Remus watched him go, before sighing. Looking down at the grave, he had a sudden thought.
"Wait, Doctor wait." Remus cried, running after him. "They told me all about the adventures you had. They told me some of the things you told them. You told them time can be re-written!"
"What are you-"
"Re-write this. Stop them from dying!" Remus said.
"I can't."
"Please. It's not too late, you can still save them." Remus cried, almost crying now. "Please, I don't want to be alone anymore."
"It's a fixed point in time. I'm so sorry." The Doctor said. "There is nothing I can do."
"You could try. Didn't they mean anything to you? Weren't they important to you in the slightest?"
"Of course they are important. Far more important than you will ever know. But I can't do anything to save them. Fixed points in time can't be changed." The Doctor said. "I have to go now. It was nice to meet you. And Lily and James Potter," he said, looking over Remus's shoulder at the grave, "you were absolutely brilliant."
Without another word, the Doctor turned away and walked slowly into the darkness. Remus stood in the same place, crying quietly. He pulled out a single white Lily and placed it on their grave.
Looking over his shoulder, as he left the cemetery, he saw the silhouette of the strange man called 'The Doctor', walking towards a blue police box.
