Their Happiness (fem!reader*, Aberama Gold)

(*- Best friend!reader, Aberama Gold x Polly Gray, AU-ish)

You had been in love with Aberama for as long as you could remember. The two of you had been thick as thieves, growing into adulthood together, even helping raise Bonnie after his mother died. You weren't sure when you fell in love with him. It sort of happened slowly, but you kept it to yourself. Aberama was affectionate with people he was close to so there was no way of knowing if he felt anything for you like you felt for him. You didn't want to ruin your friendship, even as an adult. Nor would you even get the chance to.

You blinked in surprise. "What?" you asked softly as Aberama smiled at you from across the table. "I'm getting married, Y/N," his soft, slightly raspy voice answered, "Polly accepted." You gave him a smile that didn't reach your eyes. You knew it didn't. Not that he noticed in his bubble of bliss. You heart was more than broken. It was completely crushed.

It wasn't that you didn't like Pol. You did. She was your friend too. She was a lovely woman with a fiery spirit that you got on with well. You could see why Aberama had fallen for her even though you wished he hadn't. Still, it was better to be in his life, pretending to be happy for him, than to never seen him again. Wasn't it? You could handle that although the second nail in the proverbial coffin came a few weeks later, during tea with Pol.

"A-Are you sure, Pol? What about Ada?" Pol smiled at you and reached over to give your hand a little squeeze. "I am. I want you to stand with me as I wed Aberama. You are his best friend and know him better than anyone." You felt yourself swallow thickly as the air around you became almost suffocating in a way that wasn't caused by the cloud of cigarette smoke wafting around Pol.

"If that's what you want, then of course I'd be happy to," you found your mouth saying without your permission. She gave you a soft smile that you hated. It made you feel so guilty. If you could hate the woman herself, it would be better. But Polly Gray made it so damned difficult to despise her and she was an incredible friend as long as you didn't betray her.

That was what lead you to now. You were standing with Ada as you both helped Pol get ready for her wedding. Part of you wanted to run from the room, straight to Aberama, and confess everything. You knew you could never hurt him like that, however. He loved Pol and Pol loved him. Their happiness was the most important thing that day. To that end, you continued assisting Pol before taking your place for the ceremony.

As the officiate spoke to them of loving one another and being faithful to each other, you drowned out his voice. You had to focus on not crying. You'd get over it eventually. You knew you would. There was no choice. You were so lost in your own thoughts that you didn't realize the ceremony was over until you heard the clapping. You came back to reality in time to see Pol and Aberama kiss, sealing their union. Your eyes met Bonnie's and he gave you a smile.

At the party after the wedding, you remained on the sidelines as much as possible. You wanted out of there, but were expected to stay. So you plastered on a smile and tried not to think about how badly you were hurting. You had done a pretty decent job of it until Bonnie approached and asked for a dance. As his godmother, who were you to refuse?

While you danced Bonnie leaned a little closer and whispered, "I wish it were you." You glanced at him with furrowed brows. "I like Polly, I do. But you're more of a mother to me than she will ever be." You smiled at him again and willed your heart to stay in one piece. "You mustn't say such things, Bonnie. Your father is happy and in love. That is the greatest gift we could ever ask for in this life."

"But you love him." The tips of your lips turned down a little. "I have loved him for a very long time, but it doesn't matter. It isn't important. What is important is that we support them and love them both as a family. Do you understand? You cannot take away their happiness, Bonnie, so say nothing about this to your father." His dark eyes met yours and he nodded somewhat sadly. You glanced over at where Pol and Aberama were dancing and knew you were making the right choice, even if you felt like your entire world was crumbling before your eyes.
