Return the Favor* (Alfie Solomons x fem!reader**)
(*-Part 2 of "Spies Can't Catch Feelings". **-Also enemy!Tommy Shelby x fem!reader)
For a few months, you were lucky enough to avoid both Tommy and Alfie. You used the time wisely, finding a new job and new friends. The new routine came easy to you even if it was a little boring when compared to the old one. That didn't stop you from looking over your shoulder every so often though. You weren't stupid. You knew Tommy had new spies watching you. It wouldn't have surprised you if it was one of the Shelby brothers themselves. As long as you didn't see Tommy, you were fine.
The longer you were alone, the more time you'd had to think about everything that had happened. As you thought you realized that there really had been no way Tommy would have ever shared your feelings. Alfie, though, was a different story. If everything hadn't been so messed up you could have easily pictured a future with him. There were times when you wished you could start over. Meet Alfie again under different circumstances. You had no idea you'd soon get that chance.
You were walking down the street toward home when you suddenly felt yourself tipping backward. You managed to keep yourself from falling and focused your gaze on the person who had caused you to tip. Or rather the dog that had caused it. "Cyril?" you asked and the dog barked causing your eyes to widen. If Cyril was here then-
"Cyril! Come back," a familiar voice barked out. You froze in place. Alfie. You glanced up just as Alfie stopped right in front of you. His eyes darted between you and the dog now sitting at your feet. "Alfie..." you greeted, unsure of yourself. You hadn't seen him in so long. He looked good. Better than you remembered.
A soft smile made its way to Alfie's lips as he greeted you in return. Cyril barked happily from his place at your feet. The dog had always loved you. You'd even joked that he loved you more than he did Alfie. For a moment, you were unsure of what to say. After the way you'd left things you didn't think he'd really want to speak to you. "You're looking well, pet." The statement took you by such surprise, you couldn't help but laugh. Alfie joined you and when your laughter died down, he asked you to join him for a drink. You agreed, never expecting that one drink would lead to the best relationship of your life as well as the most heart-wrenching day.
*time skip*
You stared at Alfie in disbelief. On his lips, he wore a bemused smirk as he waited for your mind to catch up to what had just happened. "That particular question usually requires an answer, love," he said with a chuckle. The two of you were standing on the beach, watching Cyril run along the coast when Alfie had asked you to marry him.
Never in a million years did you think Alfie would propose. Granted, you never thought he'd fall in love with you either after you'd played spy for Tommy. "Of course I will, Alfie. Of course I-" you were interrupted by Alfie's lips on yours. You giggled into the kiss before a bark from Cyril caused you to pull away from each other.
Your gaze followed Cyril before landing on a figure slowly approaching you and Alfie. The blood in your veins turned to ice. Alfie gently moved you behind him, but otherwise he didn't make a move. "Alfie," Tommy greeted when he reached the two of you. His cerulean eyes flickered to you. "Y/N." You noticed the grip Alfie had on his cane tighten a bit when Tommy spoke to you. You placed a soothing hand on your fiancé's back.
You tensed when Tommy pulled out his gun. "Tom...don't," you said just loudly enough for him to hear. Once again, his gaze found yours. There was no trace of emotion as he regarded you. "I told you if I ever saw you again, I would shoot you," he replied, his voice even and steady. In that moment, you couldn't remember why you had ever thought you loved him. He was a monster.
"Between the eyes, if I remember correctly," you responded smoothly. You weren't going to give him the satisfaction of seeing you tremble before him. Tommy let a little huff of air from his nose, like he was trying not to laugh at you. For a moment, everything was still and quiet. Then, without warning, Tommy raised the gun and fired.
It was as if time had slowed. You felt no pain. You didn't feel anything. It took a moment to realized that you weren't the one shot. Alfie fell back into you, nearly knocking you in the sand. Time sped up again when you saw the blood on Alfie's face as he fell to the sand. You sank to your knees next to him and screamed. It was ripped from your throat before you could stop it. You were certain it was caught in the waves and carried out to sea.
When it finally died down, you whipped your head to the side to look at Tommy. With all the callousness you'd ever heard, he said, "I figured shooting you in the heart would hurt more." Every ounce of rage you felt began bubbling up inside you. You almost felt like you were burning from the inside. There were no thoughts in your head as you grabbed up Alfie's own pistol.
"And I told you I'd return the favor," you growled before squeezing the trigger. Tommy fell to the ground and you dropped Alfie's gun. You didn't spare Tommy another glance. Alfie's chest was still rising and falling shallowly and you knew you needed to get him out of there. It took all your strength, but you were able to haul Alfie to his beach home and call for his personal physician. The man didn't ask questions, but simply went to work.
You paced outside the room with Cyril at your heels. You trusted Alfie's doctor, but you wanted so badly to be at Alfie's side. Tommy Shelby and his family had better pray Tommy was in fact dead. If he wasn't, no force on earth would stop your vengeance if Alfie died. You knew once the Shelbys, particularly Pol, knew the circumstances of you shooting him, they'd leave you be. Angry yes, but an eye-for-an-eye and all that.
After what seemed like days, the doctor finally emerged from Alfie's room. You were in front of him in an instant. "He will live, but I'm afraid the battle is not over yet. He will likely be disfigured. The two of you have a long recovery...mentally speaking." You wanted to roll your eyes. Alfie was one of the strongest people you knew. He'd get through this. And you would be by his side.
