A Dream (Jareth x reader)
You couldn't remember how you ended up in the elaborately decorated room you were in. You couldn't remember anything really, but you had a nagging feeling that you were supposed to be looking for something or someone. As you let your eyes scan the ballroom, the nagging feeling intensified. There were people all over the place, some dancing, some mingling or eating and drinking. You turned around in a circle until you caught sight of your reflection in a mirrored surface. Your eyes widened.
You were dressed more elegantly than you ever had been, but once again, you couldn't remember when you'd changed clothing. In the reflection, you saw someone that seemed out of place. He was the only one besides yourself that wasn't wearing a mask. When you turned to look at him, he had disappeared. The nagging feeling was back. It was him. He was the one you needed to find.
You caught another glimpse of him and headed his way only for him to disappear again. It went on like that for you didn't know how long. Finally, when you had just about given up hope, you felt a presence behind you. You looked to find him looking at you with such intensity it was almost frightening. His different colored eyes drew you in as he offered his hand in a silent plea for a dance.
As soon as your hand touched his, that nagging feeling went away and you were swept away in the music that played in the background. A song you didn't know, but apparently, he did as he began singing softly in your ear. You lost yourself in his voice and in the dance. While you were still having troubling remembering, you knew you had never felt anything so all-consuming before.
"Is this a dream?" you whispered and he smiled. "Only if you wish it, precious thing." Your brows furrowed. Something about the way he'd said that was familiar. Maybe you'd met him before? "Who are you?" you asked, earning another toothy grin. "I will tell you if you honor me with another dance." Beaming, you could only nod.
The two of you were silent once more as you danced but you couldn't shake the unspoken attraction you felt for the man. You felt as if you'd known him all your life. There was a sense of danger about him, but you didn't think he'd hurt you. The longer you were in his arms, the more comfortable and familiar it felt. As the dance was winding down, he slowed his movements and his gaze met you.
You don't know what possessed you, but you leaned in until your lips were nearly touching. You could feel his breath hitch a bit. Clearly he'd thought he had the upper hand. He was not expecting this. The air around you was thick with the electricity passing between the two of you. That didn't seem to stop him from ghosting his lips over yours in a barely there kiss. As soon as his lips brushed yours, your brain supplied you with one word.
"Jareth." He froze as he leaned in to kiss you again. He pulled back to look into your eyes. "Jareth," you said again as the memories began flooding back, "The Goblin King." He dropped his arms and stared at you for a moment. You felt anger seeping into your bones. You wanted to yell and scream, but instead, you took the coward's out. You ran. You were trapped, but you ran. At least you thought so.
The next thing you knew, you were opening your eyes to see a canopy of trees above you. Your brows furrowed. Had it really all been a dream? But why would you dream such an intense and romantic dream about Jareth? And why, if it was a dream, did you still have the tingling sensation of his lips on yours? It also confused you as to why he had seemed so thrown by the fact that you had initiated the kiss.
You got up from the ground and brushed the dirt off your clothes. Your memory was a little fuzzy, but you knew you still had a purpose. Deciding moving was better than staying put, you began your trek anew while your mind scrambled to remember where it was you were supposed to be going. All the while, you kept bringing you fingers back to your lips. "It was just a dream," you kept telling yourself, but deep down, there was a part of you that wished it had been real.
