*Fandom: Hellboy(2004)*

*Warnings: unrequited feelings. Reader has a huge crush and Hellboy doesn't feel the same*

You know that feeling when you like a person and you're pretty much certain they don't like you back?

Yeah, that feeling gets worse when you know they have feelings for your best friend.

You loved Liz and all, but it just made you feel so terrible knowing Red wanted her instead of you. But you kept that to yourself. You didn't want to hurt either of them.

See, you're basically the opposite of Liz. You freeze things. You can make snow appear out of thin air. When you feel strong negative emotions, you slowly turn to ice, which makes you really fragile.

But then your personality was way different too. You're not as bold and brave as she is. You're not straightforward. You're not flirty or anything like that.

In your eyes, you're boring. You're shy. The only time you're ever able to break out of your shell is during battle. But during that time you're not focused on anything but the mission.

So everything was just really complicated.

"(Y/N), what's the matter?" you suddenly heard Abe from behind you. You snapped around, a hand to your chest.

"Jesus, Abe, you scared me," you wheezed.

"My apologies," he said, "but you seem a bit down."

"No, I'm fine, Abe, seriously," you said, waving off his words. It was silent for a moment.

"Ah, I see the problem," Abe mused, breaking that silence.

"Seriously Abe? Am I not allowed to have secrets?" you groaned.

"(Y/N), if you really feel that way about him, you should tell him," Abe advised. You sighed.

"It's not that easy, Abe. I'm not good at talking to people, especially those I like. Besides, I know he likes Liz, and I don't want to get in the way of that," you said, huffing lightly.

Abe stood silent for just a moment. "Do you really not know?" he asked. You looked at him, narrowing your eyes.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, Liz and Myers are going out. Have been for a while. Did she really not say anything to you?" Abe replied, and your eyes widened.

"Wait, seriously?! How could she have never told me? I'm her best friend!" you said, mostly to yourself. "Thanks, Abe, you've been a big help," you said, walking past him and giving him a pat on the shoulder.

You headed down to Liz's room, knocking on the door.

No answer.

You tried again. Same thing.

You sighed. Only one thing left to do.

You headed down to Hellboy's room and knocked. He answered almost immediately. "Yeah?" he asked.

"H-hey Red. Um, have you seen Liz anywhere?" you asked a bit awkwardly. Damn my awkwardness... you thought.

"Yeah, she's in here, actually," he replied, and walked back into his room, gesturing you to follow. "Hey, Liz, you got a guest."

You walked in, seeing Liz sitting on the bed. You decided to sit next to her, and Red went back to whatever he was doing.

"Hey (Y/N), what's up? Something wrong?" Liz asked.

"Well, in a way," you replied. "Why didn't you tell me you and Myers were dating? You swore you'd tell me anytime you got a boyfriend."

From across the room, you heard Hellboy choke, and Liz stared at you wide eyed. "Wha...did Abe tell you? I was gonna wait until a good time to tell you guys, I swear," she said, her shock evident.

Shit.

Shit shit shit.

You had just crushed Red's dreams and outed Liz. This was terrible. So terrible. Oh god.

"Oh, geez, I'm sorry! I thought most people already knew, the way Abe talked about it, and agh I feel so bad now, I'm so sorry," you rambled.

"Look, don't blame yourself. Abe couldn't keep his stupid mouth shut and you misinterpreted it. It happens. At least it's out now," Liz sighed. "Now, excuse me, I've got a fish to fry." And with that, she got up and walked out.

Leaving you alone with Red.

"W-well uhh," you trailed off, not sure what to say. You heard him huff before he stood up and walked towards you, plopping down on the bed beside you. He took a puff from his cigar, bit otherwise stayed silent.

You took a deep breath, shaking off your insecurities. You knew you had to say something, as much as you didn't want to.

"I...I know you had feelings for her," you said, unable to look at him, so you stared down at your hands in your lap. He grunted, but didn't respond. "And I know how much you hate him," you added, to which he chuckled shortly.

"But..." you started, but were interrupted.

"But what, (Y/N)? There are other fish in the sea? I should just be able to get over it? Definitely never heard all that before..." he grumbled bitterly.

You shook your head. "No. I'm saying you shouldn't let it get you down. Don't let heartbreak break you. If she didn't return your feelings, she doesn't deserve you, because you are amazing and deserve the best," you said, finally gaining the courage to look up at him.

He chuckled, his eyes closed. "I'm not amazing, sweetheart," he laughed, then turned his head to look you in the eye.

You started crumbling inside knowing you both were making eye contact, but you had to stay strong. For him.

You inhaled deeply before speaking again. "You may not think so, but you are amazing to me. You are probably the most amazing person I know. I-" you stopped yourself before you could let those three words tumble out.

"You what?"

Your walls were crumbling, you couldn't keep this up much longer.

"I...look it doesn't matter. My point is that you're amazing. You deserve the best. I don't care if you don't see it, because that's how I think of you," you finished, tearing your eyes from his to keep from breaking. You could feel your face burning.

Red chuckled again. "Damn, you really have it bad, huh?"

Your eyes widened. He knew. You were so obvious.

"I...I...I gotta go," you stuttered, starting to stand up, but a strong hand pushed you back down.

"I'm not an idiot, (Y/N). You're pretty obvious, especially with a speech like that," he chuckled softly. His hand was still laying on your shoulder, making you blush harder, if that was possible. You still couldn't make eye contact.

"I...okay yeah, okay I'm obvious. But...I said you deserve the best and that's obviously not me. Besides, I know you don't like me, and even if you did now, it'd probably just be a rebound and as much as I lo-like you I don't just want to be that and I know I should have told you this sooner but I'm so bad at expressing my feelings and now you probably think I'm an idiot and-"

"(Y/N), shut up."

You stopped your rambling. You were panicking inside. What was he gonna say? He'd probably say how much he hated you. Oh god what had you done.

"Look at me." he said, but you couldn't move. "(Y/N)." You were frozen. He grabbed your chin lightly and turned your head to face him, but you still couldn't look at his face. "(Y/N), look at me," he said, more forcefully this time. Reluctantly, you raised your eyes to his.

"I don't think you're an idiot," he said. "You're a good person. Your feelings matter. I'm going to be honest, and when I say this, I don't want you to feel bad. It's not your fault."

Slowly, you nodded your head, and he continued.

"I don't like you like you like me. Don't beat yourself up about it. Maybe some day I'll return your feelings, but right now, I can't. You understand, right? And you're not gonna blame yourself?"

That was it. Your walls broke and the tears began flowing. "I...I-I..." you kept stuttering, but you couldn't form words. And then the unexpected happened.

Red, the tough and seemingly uncaring Hellboy, pulled you into a hug.

You just gripped onto his trenchcoat and sobbed.

You sat there for several minutes, sobbing and hiccuping while he held you. Eventually you started to calm down. "I'm sorry," you whimpered.

"Don't be sorry," he said quietly. You pulled away.

"I'm just gonna go. I just...need to be away from everyone for a bit. But...thanks Red," you mumbled.

Then you left, not giving him a chance to say anything back, and rushed to your room.
