"Lily!" Tom cried, bursting into the hospital wing. Lily rested limply on one if the beds, her vivid red hair like blood on snow against her pale face.

He sank into the bright blue recliner next to the bed and quickly grasped her hand. It was as cold as ice.

The third year girl opened her ice-crusted eyes and smiled as she noticed him.

"What happened?" Tom demanded at Madam Pomphrey. She shook her head. "The Archer again. Lily was in Hogsmeade when they attacked. We think this time, she was a specific target."

"Why was she walking alone?!" Tom asked, panic in his voice.

Madam Pomphrey turned her head away and Tom saw a tear fall. His hands flew to his mouth as horrific possibilities filled his head.

"Mister Thaddeus Black wasn't as lucky as Lily." Tom gasped; this couldn't mean what it sounded like, it just couldn't...

"Mr. Rawls, I am so sorry." Madam Pomphrey told him gently. "Thaddeus was killed in the attack."

Tom hadn't ever shed a tear in his life; as far back as he could remember, he had been cool and callous; absent of emotion. But at the moment he was informed of Thaddeus' death, he experienced something completely foreign to him.

A broken heart.

He squeezed Lily's hand harder as he shook violently, tears threatening to spill out of his eyes. She looked at him a smiled again.

The dam broke.

Tears streamed down his face while he glanced at Lily's sweet smile, her beautiful face, her warm brown eyes.
Lily opened her mouth and began to speak, her voice raspy.

"I know that you're sad, Voldie, but it'll be okay."

Tom sniffed, too distracted to notice the name, though Madam Pomphrey glanced over at them sharply.

"How can you say that?" He asked wearily. "Our best friend is gone; we'll never see him until we die."

"Fate isn't done with us yet." Lily said simply. "And I have you."

In that instant, it hit him as sharply as a sword; like a thousand avalanches crashing down on him; something he should have realized ages ago.

The former Dark Lord was in love with Harry Potter's daughter.
