Nivaina's POV

I couldn't move. I was sinking and blood was pouring out of every wound in my body. This was it. I was going to die. My lungs were burning and my head felt like it was going to explode. At the young age of 19, I still haven't done so many things that I wanted. My life would end and the last person I saw was my horrible excuse of a father. He was the reason that I was in this mess. I was about to close my eyes when I felt arms around my body and air in my lungs.

A Few Hours Earlier

I was playing with my magic in my bedroom. I was rearranging the furniture in my room with my magic because I was bored. I heard a knock on my bedroom door so I swung it open with it my magic.

"You know you shouldn't be doing that. The clave is very prestigious about how the Institute looks." Jace says as he walks into my room.

"I'll move it back after. I'm just bored and I wanted to practice." I tell him.

"I know you don't like practicing in the training room, but no one will care if you practice. You are part Shadowhunter after all so you belong here." Jace tells me.

"They will care. No one likes when I practice my magic in the training room because I have magic. I personally love my magic, and I love being a warlock. The bad part about me is the half Shadowhunter part." I say as I move my dresser back to its original place.

"Nivaina, I get that your father is a circle member but that doesn't mean that you have to hate being part Shadowhunter." He says.

"Why are you even in here Jace? Shouldn't you be with your new girlfriend Clary?" I ask.

"Clary's not my girlfriend and you know that. And I came to get you because we have a mission." Jace informs me. I snap my fingers and all my furniture is back in its original places in an instant. I got off my bed and grabbed my leather jacket. I pulled it over my caramel coloured skin before tying my long brown curly hair in a ponytail.

"Lets go." I said to Jace as I walk past him. We get to the main area of the Institute where Alec, Izzy and Clary are waiting for us. Alec explains the mission to us and we grab our weapons then head off. 

We arrived at the location where the threat was spotted but nothing is here. We split up to scope the place out. All of a sudden a bunch of circle members jump out and start attacking us.

'Great, we walked right into an ambush' I think to myself. I fight off a few circle members before I see my father. He sees me and starts running away. I chase after him and he leads me by the river. I catch up to him and trap him with my magic.

"Just like your bitch of a mother!" He yells. "Always using magic. I can't believe I feel for her seduction magic and made you" he spat. I tighten my grip on him with my magic. "Watching as she cried when I stabbed my blade through her was one of the best feelings of my life. I watched as the life fled from her eyes and the blood ran out of her lifeless body" He taunted. I felt tears pool in my eyes. My mother was such a beautiful soul and she was taken away by a monster.

"Stop it!" I yelled at him. "You are not allowed to talk about her" I told him.

"Oh but I will talk about her." He said. "You know her last request was to see you one more time. I then made her a promise. The promise that I would kill you too. She begged me not to but I just laughed. Laughed as she suffered and her last thought was you dying." He said.

"Shut up!" I yelled again. I felt tears fall and my magic started to get weak. My grip on him loosened enough so that he could break free. I didn't realize that he broke free and he walked up to me, blade in hand and stabbed me. he stabbed me over and over again in the stomach, legs, and chest. He then picked my fragile body up and tossed me in the river.

I used all my energy to look up at who saved me and I looked into those blue/golden eyes. 

"You're gonna be okay" Jace told me before I blacked out.

Time Skip

I woke up in the infirmary and looked around. I was alone. I wondered how long I had been out. I saw my phone on the table beside my bed and I grabbed it.

9 days. I was out for 9 days. 

I decided to text Jace so he knew that I was awake. I sent the text and then I waited a bit. I heard stomping just outside the Institute, before I heard yelling.

"Whoever the hell is trying to be funny, it's not fucking funny!" Jace yelled as he barged into the infirmary. He looked extremely pissed off. He looked around before making eye contact with me. As soon as he saw that I was awake his face softened.

"I wasn't trying to be funny" I said.

"Nivaina, you're awake. Oh my god." He whispered as tears pooled in his eyes. 

"Jace why are you crying? You barely ever cry. Only when something really bad happens." I asked.

"Because something really bad did happen. You were stabbed numerous times and then tossed into a river Nivaina. You have been unconscious for 9 days and you almost died. Your heart stopped beating a few times but they got it to beat again. Magnus Bane had to come in to heal you because the Irate rune wasn't doing anything. I thought I was going to lose you and I can't lose you Nivaina because I love you" Jace explained. I froze at his words.  'He loves me?' I thought. 'How can he love me. He's the one who broke up with me 2 months ago' 

"Jace you were the one who broke up with me remember? You're the one who told me that it wasn't going to work because emotions cloud our judgement and having relationships in the shadow world are what get you killed. Plus you and that Clary girl are a thing" I said.

"Well I was wrong about all of it. You and I will work and I can prove it. And Clary and I aren't a thing. I was just helping her get used to the shadow world because she didn't even know that she was a shadowhunter until a few weeks ago." Jace told me.

"Well if you think that we could work, then we can try it again but I want to be sure that you are really up for this and you're not just saying this because I almost died. So we are going to take this slow and not force anything okay?" I asked

"I'm so up for this Nivaina. I really want this and I am so happy that you want this too" Jace replied grabbing my hand. We talked for a while before he had to go on another mission. I decided to get up and out of the infirmary and take a shower, because I had been unconscious for 9 days. 

When I got out of the shower, I put on some black sweatpants and a  black t shirt. I tied my long curly hair in a ponytail and went to see if Jace was back from his mission. As I walked into the main area of the Institute, I saw Jace and Clary talking. They were really close to each other and I didn't like it. I decided to not interrupt them because they might have been talking about the mission. I stood unnoticed by either of them and I pulled out my phone to pass the time. It was currently 11:59, one minute until my 20th birthday finally begins. When I looked back up from my phone I saw Jace kissing Clary! I ran back to my room and locked the door. 

'This is the best way to start off my 20th birthday' I thought. 'See the boy that just confessed his so called love to you, kissing another girl.' 

I laid on my bed for about an hour before I fell asleep. 

I woke up to knocking on my door. I slowly got up from my bed and unlocked the door.

"Happy Birthday" Jace smiled as I opened the door. I gave him a 'wtf' look before slamming the door in his face. He then knocked again and I angrily swung the door open. "What was that for?" He asked, oblivious to what he had done.

"Oh I don't know. Maybe for kissing Clary right after you confessed your love to me!" I yelled at him, before going to slam the door again but he stopped it with his hand. 

"Nivaina, I didn't kiss her, and I know how this sounds but it's the truth. She kissed me. She thought that I liked her because I was helping her get used to the shadow world and she kissed me. As soon as it happened I pushed her away and told her that I was just being nice and that I didn't think of her that way" Jace explained.

"You really think I'm gonna fall for that bullshit?" I asked. 

"It isn't bullshit Nivaina, I'm telling you the truth. You're the only girl I wanna be with" He tells me. I looked at him, trying to analyze his face to tell if he was lying or not. I had known Jace pretty much my entire life so I could tell when he was lying. 

"Okay." I whispered. He walks up to me and hugs me. 

"I would never do that to you" He whispers. He pulls away and looks at me. He places his hand on my cheek and starts to lean in. I close the gap between us and connect my lips to his. The kiss gets pretty heated and we start making out. Jace goes to take my shirt off but I stop him. 

"Wait" I say.

"What? What's wrong?" Jace asks, worried.

"I don't know about this. It didn't work the first time so what makes us think that it will work the second time around?" I ask, pulling away. "Maybe we should just stick to being friends" I say, sadly. Jace looks at me with a hurt expression. I know that he doesn't just want to be friends but this is what I think is best for the both of us. "I know that this isn't what you want to hear but it's what I believe and what I think is right for the both of us. Maybe when all this Valentine and Circle member stuff goes away we can try again but I just don't think the timing is right. I'm sorry Jace." I say.

"I get it Nivaina. I don't necessarily like it but if it's what you think is right then I guess I just have to accept that. But I am going to try to finish this Valentine stuff as fast as I can so we can try again" He smiles. I smile back and hug him. After the hug he walk to the door to leave my bedroom.

"Thanks for saving me by the way" I thank him

"No problem. I'm just glad that you are okay" He replies.
