Chapter 1: Smooth Criminal
I got the idea for this story one night while at a friend's house. We were watching The Green Hornet and we thought it would be awesome to write a mob story. This is the beginning of that brain child. Hope you all enjoy it. It's not something I normally write, but I think challenging myself is important. =)

Lex Fowler began his nightly runs throughout the city of Flint, Michigan. It was nothing out the ordinary for him. Although a school night, he knew his night had just begun, and it was only ten o’clock. He ran his fingers through his long raven hair, pushing it out of his sapphire blue eyes. Lex needed his eyesight; it was often difficult finding his man when it was late at night in the dying city. Within moments, he found the location of his first sting for the night. He pulled up to the house and stepped out of his black Mustang. The Russo-Irish boy knew what he was doing, and well.
Lex was the son of Alexander Fowler, the right hand man of the main drug runner in Flint, Wayne Harper. Wayne ran the entire operation for the city of Flint. Since his father’s untimely disappearance, Lex had been put in charge of doing a lot of the dirty work. Wayne had no older sons, only a daughter his age and three young boys no older than eleven. Being eighteen, it was time that Lex proved his worth to the organization.
He approached the door with single-minded determination. Lex judged the door’s strength before he threw his weight into it, causing it to burst off its frame. Lex entered the room, pistol drawn and ready. ‘Shoot first and ask questions later’ was his motto, and if this guy proved to be a problem, Lex was going to put it into action. He crept silently down the hall to the kitchen where he found the man rummaging through a refrigerator. A smirk formed on his face as the man realized he was standing there.
A panicked look was written across the man’s face. “You tell Harper that I’ll have his money tomorrow! I had to pay some bills man.”
Lex wasn’t buying the story. He took brief aim before shooting a round that barely missed the guy’s arm. “He better have it tomorrow, or next time I won’t miss.” Before the man could mutter a response, Lex was gone, off to his next target. If that was any indicator on how the rest of the night was going to go, Lex was not going to be very happy.
The next morning…
Michele flipped a lock of her brown hair over her shoulder as she waited just inside the main entrance at Flint Southwestern Academy. She was becoming impatient; her boyfriend was running vey late. Her best friend, Juliet Harper, stood next to her, already bored with waiting for him. It was one of their last few days of school. All of them were ready for to be done with school, and on to their next phase of life. All that stood in their way were final exams.
“Did your dad have Lex out late again last night?” Michele asked, toying with the straps of her bag, making them more comfortable.
Juliet pushed her glasses back as she picked up her bag from the floor. “You know dad always has Lex out late. It’s his job.”
Michele frowned. “Why doesn’t your dad use John once in a while?”
Juliet almost laughed. “Psh, you know John doesn’t have Lex’s talent or abilities. He’s slow. Lex is the best guy dad has.”
Michele barely nodded. Her eyes immediately spotted Lex pushing through security. He had an irritated look upon his face, just like everyone else who had been in line for eternity. Lex snatched up his bag and made his way over to Michele and Juliet. After a brief kiss that Juliet ignored, the trio began walking towards class. There was no waiting for John; he had already graduated the year previously. The three friends would soon be joining him as alumni.
“So, what were you out doing last night?” Juliet asked casually. “Another late night?”
Lex barely nodded. “Your father had me out collecting again. Of course hardly anyone had their money for me to give him.” He took a deep breath before adding, “He wasn’t very happy when I only came back with a fraction of the profits.”
Michele frowned. If there was one thing she hated it was Lex disappointed or in trouble with the boss, her best friend’s father. As of recent, that seemed to be happening more and more. Lex was under a lot of pressure since his father disappeared. As if that wasn’t enough, Lex was trying to set up search and rescue missions to find his father. No one knew what happened, only that after a long street battle Lex’s father was gone. Lex knew he had to find him, dead or alive. He just didn’t know when or how; all he knew was that with each passing day it was becoming more likely that he was in fact dead.
The three friends went about their day like normal. That night however, was going to be a long Friday for sure. The whole gang was going to be staying at Juliet’s home, which would mean they would be in the heat of all the gang’s activity for sure. Lex knew he would be back on recon, risking his life once again for Wayne, while the girls and John got to stay at home. Honestly, Lex wasn’t so sure he was going to be able to keep up this lifestyle. It was beginning to drain the life out of him.
At the end of the long school day, he and Michele made their way to her home to pick up clothes and whatever else was needed for the get together that evening. As Michele packed her bags, Lex stood in her doorway, looking into her room blankly. Michele took notice to this and decided to ask about it.
“Lex, what’s been bothering you?” she inquired. “You’ve been acting rather unusual lately.”
Lex sighed. “I’m just troubled. Working late every night for Wayne is killing me. I know before I can relax tonight with you guys, he’s going to send me out again.”
Michele grimaced. She really hated seeing him stressed out like that. “Well when you get back, I’ll help you relax, mmkay? We’ll play some games or something.”
Lex smiled slightly. He noticed she had just stuffed her bag with the last bit of her stuff. She picked up her pillow, and looked at him. “You ready to leave?” he asked.
Michele smiled back at him. “You know it.”
The two made their way back out to his car and began the trek across town to Juliet’s house. It sucked having to travel all the way to the other side of the city to hang out with their friends; Michele and Lex both lived on the west side of Flint, while Juliet and John both lived in the east. After driving down two highways and through several bad neighborhoods, the couple finally arrived at the humble abode of Flint’s deadliest man. The two went around back to the back door, and slowly entered the house, not knowing what exactly this night had in store for them.
