Chapter 8

It was Saturday evening and Jackie had finally just finished all of her paperwork for the CDC. She had been so swamped recently, that she hadn't even seen Emmett since Monday, but the state had insisted on having everything turned in before graduation.

Through it all, the girls had been real troopers. They actually hadn't bothered her all day, despite it being the weekend.

She was sitting on Maddie's bed, reading both girls a bed time story.

"Mom," began Sofia, "will the Easter Bunny know where to find us?"

"Of course" Jackie replied not really putting much thought into what Sofia was asking her.

"But we didn't color any Easter Eggs today."

As Sofia finished her sentance, Jackie's eyes drew wide. She had totally forgotten that tomorrow was Easter.

She had nothing. No baskets, no dresses, no candy. Did she even have eggs? There were maybe five in the refrigerator, she thought to herself when all of a sudden the door bell rang.

"Do you think that's the Easter Bunny?" Sofia asked excitedly.

"I doubt it," Jackie laughed, "but I'll go check."

"Mom!" Sofia yelled from her bed as Jackie descended the stairs. "Tell him we're sorry about forgetting to color eggs!"

Jackie slowly opened the door, slightly apprehensive as to who might be on the other side this late at night. She sighed in relief to find it was only Emmett.

"Hello, Beautiful," he smiled as she opened the door. "Long time, no see," he smirked.

"I'm so sorry," she began. "You won't believe the week I've had," she explained. "And I totally forgot that tomorrow was Easter," she whispered as a few tears filled her eyes.

Suddenly Alice stepped out from behind Emmett. "I knew you might forget," she stated with a small smile. "So I took it upon myself to pick up a few things," she exclaimed excitedly as she brushed past both Emmett and Jackie and invited herself in.

"Oh my god," Jackie breathed as a few things turned out to be two gigantic Easter baskets, two of the most beautiful Easter dresses and a dozen intricately decorated Easter eggs.

"This was all that I could get ready in time for tonight," Alice explained. "Tomorrow I'll have Easter eggs hiding all over our place for the girls when you guys come for dinner," she gushed.

Jackie smacked her forehead as she cursed.

"You forgot about tomorrow," Emmett answered knowingly.

"I've got that covered too," Alice said as she seemed to magically reveal another bag from hiding somewhere.

It was a short lilac cocktail dress with a strapless sweetheart neckline and a rhinestone embellished botice. Jackie couldn't believe it, but it was actually even in the right size.

"Seriously you guys," Jackie paused, slightly overwhelmed, "this is too much."

"Babe," Emmett paused cupping her chin with his hands, "you guys are my family now," he began.

"And that means letting me," Alice interrupted, "do what I do best!" she exclaimed.

Jackie shook her head in disbelief.

"It's best to just agree with the pixie," Emmett added.

"At this point, I don't know what I'd do with out you guys," she said as a few tears spilled down her cheeks.

Alice hugged Jackie and then left to go home so she could finish up her Easter preperations there. As soon as Alice was gone, Emmett scooped Jackie up into his arms and carried her over to the couch.

"Your sister is seriously amazing," Jackie said as she laid her head down on Emmett's chest.

"Yeah," he admitted, "she can be pretty cool at times."

"And you," she said gazing into eyes, "are absolutely perfect."

Emmett kissed the top of her head and a few moments later she was sound asleep.

He had always thought it was strange when Edward had said he enjoyed watching Bella sleep, but now he understood what he meant. Jackie looked so happy and peaceful in his arms, he didn't ever want to let her go. He held her for a few hours, just watching her breathe, then finally he carried her up to her bed and tucked her in.

"I love you," he whispered.

"Alright," Jackie said as she examined the girls' dresses while they stood on her bed, "let's go over everything one more time," she instructed.

She fluffed the tulle under their dresses while drilling them with the questions.

"Now, what's your name?" she asked.

"Sofia Devereaux," Jackie shook her head, "I mean Winters," Sofia corrected and nodded her head towards Maddie, "and this is my sister Maddie. She doesn't talk much."

"And what do you say if people ask why?"

"She misses her friends from back home in Chicago."

"Very good," Jackie replied. "Now what if they ask why we moved?"

"Because of your job, you wanted to spend more time with us." Sofia paused, deep in thought about something. "Mommy, do you think Emmett will be our new Daddy?"

Jackie smiled, "I don't know baby," she said cupping Sofia's face in her hand.

"Well both me and Maddie think he would do a good job," Sofia added as Maddie nodded her head in agreement.

"So do I baby," Jackie replied as she kissed both their heads. "So do I."

"You could have warned me your entire house was made of glass," Jackie hissed as her and the girls, stood outside the Cullen's house with Emmett.

"I didn't think it would be that big of a deal," he laughed.

Edward pulled up with Bella in his car. "What's wrong?" he asked as he and Bella walked up towards the door.

"Oh nothing," Jackie replied smiling sweetly. "Just a little nervous about meeting the family, I guess. Or, you know, shattering the entire house," she snorted.

Emmett and Edward laughed.

"Hopefully this will go better than my first time meeting everyone," Bella snickered.

Both Edward and Emmett sent her a warning glare.

"What do you mean?" Jackie gulped.

"Just make sure you eat everything on your plate," she said. "Oh, and definitely don't cut yourself or anything and bleed," she added.

"What?" Jackie questioned.

"Bella," Emmett snapped in warning.

"What. Does everyone, like faint at the sight of blood or something?" Jackie chuckled nervously.

"Yeah, or something," Bella mumbled as Emmett and Edward suddenly pulled everyone quickly into the house.

A very beautiful woman, who also shared the same amber colored eyes, stood next to Carlisle. Jackie assumed she must be Esme, the doctor's wife. They both smiled as Emmett began the introductions.

"Jackie this is my adopted mother, Esme," he said nodding towards her, "and you already know Carlisle."

Both replied with a polite hello.

"Obviously, this is Jackie," Emmett smiled as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "And these two little monkeys," he said as he grabbed one up in each arm, "are Sofia and Maddie." Both girls, who had been hiding behind Jackie were now squealing in delight. Even Maddie.

"Who wants cookies?" Esme asked as Emmett set the girls down, quickly receiving the girls' approval.

Esme's glory was cut short, however
as Jasper and Alice walked in and announced that the Easter bunny had visited the house last night.

The girls quickly ran to follow Alice outside and Jasper followed slowly behind, as though he was keeping his distance. Looking around, Jackie noticed that Jasper's sister was missing.

"Will Rosalie be joining us later?" Jackie asked.

Emmett's eyes grew wide and Edward couldn't help but smile as a slew of curse words surged through Emmett's mind.

"No," Edward replied with a slight chuckle.

"Thank god," added Bella under her breath.

Jackie looked confused, but before she could ask why, Carlisle loudly cleared his throat and Esme suddenly ushered her outside so they could watch the girls find the golden egg.

Jackie looked back over her shoulder at Emmett wondering if he was coming.

"I'll be there in a minute," he said and then turned and glared at Bella.

"What was that all about?" he questioned as soon as Jackie was out of ear shot.

"Oh, as if your life isn't better without her?" Bella challenged.

"Well yeah, but..."

"You really should tell her about Rosalie," Bella cut him off. "And while your at it, you might wanna mention you're a vampire," she hissed.

Emmett turned his attention to Edward. "Does she suspect anything?" he asked.

"I don't know," Edward said shaking his head. "Listening to her thoughts is like trying to tune into a station on an old radio," he explained. "Sometimes it's static and sometimes I can hear them as clear as day. But I definitely get the feeling she's hiding something," he frowned.

"I've felt that too," Emmett admitted.

"The girls, however, love you," Edward informed him.

"Really?" Emmett glowed.

"Yeah," he laughed. "They really want to call you dad." He frowned suddenly. "But they worry a lot that you'll hurt their mom, like their real father."

Emmett frowned. "What do you mean hurt her?" he asked. "Like physically? Or like, heart broken or something?"

Edward shook his head again, "I don't know. They definitely try not to think about it and almost immediately stop as soon as they start."

At that moment, the girls, followed by everyone else came in from outside.

"Emmett! Emmett!" hollared Sofia as her and Maddie ran into his arms. "Look what we found," she said holding up a gigantic gold egg as Emmett gathered them into his arms.

"That egg is a big as you," Emmett laughed and then set them down as Esme informed everyone it was time for dinner.

The rest of the night couldn't have gone better. Even dinner went rather smoothly considering none of the Cullens actually eat food. The girls let out some awfully big yawns as bed time approached and Emmett and Jackie got them into his jeep to get them home.

"You know, the girls really like you," Jackie said as they drove home.

"I know," Emmett smiled.

"You know," Jackie paused, "I really like you too."

As Emmett pulled into the drive way, he looked at Jackie and smirked. "I know," he cockily wagged his eyebrows at her.

"What if I like you a little bit more than 'like'?" Jackie asked him.

Emmett flashed her a toothy grin. "What's a little bit more than like?" he questioned playfully but suddenly his eyes narrowed.

"What's wrong?" Jackie asked.

He had caught a whiff of someone unusual but of course he couldn't tell her that. "Something doesn't feel right," he said as he looked towards the house.

All of a sudden, Jackie tightly gripped his forearm. "Emmett, the front door is open," she said with a trace of fear in her voice.

Emmett snarled at the thought of someone trying to hurt her. No one will touch her on my watch, he thought and then reassuringly squeezed her hand.

"Stay here," he told her as he hopped out of the jeep. Taking a deep breath, his eyes turned black as he walked up to the front door and caught the scent of the introduder. Balling his fists as he went, Emmett huffed. He was ready to take care of some business.
