Chapter 11
The following morning, Emmett tried his hardest to delay Jackie's trip out to LaPush. At one point he had even considered pulling the battery wires on her truck like Edward had done to Bella, but opted instead for more subtle ways. While putting on her mascara, Emmett suddenly grabbed her up, bear hugging her to his muscular chest. With a grin tugging at his lips, Jackie knew exactly what he was trying to do.
"Emmett Cullen, put me down this instant," she demanded, knowing she would never be able to wiggle free from his herculean grasp.
With a disappointed look, he set her down.
"I'm going, ok? And that's final," she commanded.
With a huff and an eyeroll, Emmett went and sat back down on the bed.
"You're pouting like a two year old," she laughed.
"No, I'm not," he mumbled but then realized as his arms crossed his chest that maybe he was acting slightly childish.
"I don't understand why you just don't go with me," she suggested.
"I can't," he whined for the fifteenth time. "I'm not allowed on their lands because of the treaty." His eyes widened like saucers as he realized what he just blurted out.
"Treaty?" Jackie shrieked as she turned towards Emmett. "There's a treaty?" she questioned. Clearly the situation between the two parties was worse than she initially thought.
"Yeah, but," he hesitated, "it's no big deal," he lied and sighed in relief as the girls suddenly ran in, distracting Jackie from further questioning.
It wasn't long after that, that Jackie found herself once again in the crushing embrace of Emmett as she was walking out the door to leave.
"Seriously, you're worse than the girls," she teased him. "I'll only be gone for a couple hours."
"Two hours, tops," he told her.
"It takes a little bit longer than that," she laughed as she hopped into her truck. Before he could argue, she shut the door and waved as she pulled away. She really wanted to know what this controversy was over.
A thirty minute drive later, and Jackie pulled into LaPush. As she pulled up to the Clearwater house, Sue and a teenage boy were standing outside waiting for her. The boy was tall and muscular, but not nearly as large as Emmett. He was cute, with beautifully tanned skin, a mop of short black hair and a killer smile, that dissapered as she got out of her truck.
"You didn't tell me she was with them," Jacob hissed catching a whiff of her scent mixed with someone else.
"She doesn't know what they are yet, Jacob," Sue whispered with a calm voice.
"Well then maybe we should enlighten her." Jacob's voice was filled with bitterness and disgust.
"She's not ready," Sue shook her head. "She's running from something," she informed him. "When the time is right, I will," she reassured Jacob placing a firm hand on his shoulder.
Both quit whispering and turned to greet Jackie as she walked up to them.
Sue immediately grabbed Jackie into a tight hug, then turned to introduce her to the boy standing next to her.
"Hi, I'm Jake," he said extending a hand to her and flashing her another hundred watt smile.
"Jackie," she smiled, shaking his hand.
"Sue told me you might need some help with the supplies?"
"Yeah," Jackie replied. "There's a couple boxes in my truck bed," she said nodding towards it as Jake walked over and started grabbing them. "There pretty heavy..." she trailed off as he walked past her carrying everything with little effort.
"That's why I enlisted him," Sue winked.
"I guess so," Jackie laughed.
As they walked towards the front porch of Sue's house, wolves in the forests all around them began to howl. Jackie froze, the color draining from her face.
"You don't need to be frightened," Sue told her as she reassuringly grabbed Jackie's hand.
"There's an intruder," Jake explained as he looked off into the forest.
"A cold one?" Sue questioned.
Jackie didn't understand, but she remained silent.
"No," Jake shook his head, "He's a foreigner to our lands."
Jake squinted in concentration as he continued to listen to the howls. "He's not aware he's trespassing, but he's agressive so the pack will scare him off."
With her jaw slightly agape, Jackie stared at Jake for a few moments.
"What?" He smiled at her nervously as she gazed at him intensely. He wondered if she suspected anything.
"That was impressive," she replied. "How did you do that?"
Jake shrugged it off. "I guess you could say, I have a special connection with the wolves," he smirked.
"You have to teach me how to do that," Jackie grinned.
"Yeah, sure."
Jake decided that Jackie was actually pretty cool. Had she not been dating a Cullen, they probably would have been really good friends, and because of that, he needed to talk to Sue about the trespasser.
He finally got a chance an hour or so later when Jackie excused herself to the bathroom.
"You know how you said she was running from something?" Jake whispered to Sue regarding their conversation about Jackie earlier.
"Yes..."
"Well, I think I know what it is," he answered. "Or who, actually," he added.
Sue shot him a quizzical look, urging him to go on.
"Earlier, the introduder," Jacob paused, "he was drunk and muttering something about her and how he couldn't wait to get his hands on her. The pack said he was acting beligirant."
"You don't think..." Sue trailed off.
"I do," Jacob nodded his head. "Makes me sick thinking about," his tone filled with disgust.
Jackie soon rejoined the two and it wasn't long before the line wrapped all the way around the little house. Every once in a while Jacob caught himself starring at the young woman. He couldn't help it though, she was so beautiful. He wondered how someone could hurt her, actually inflict pain on her.
As the hours passed, Jacob grew more and more fond of Jackie. Sue had left the two, some time ago, saying she had other responsibilities to attend to, so Jacob had stayed to keep Jackie company as she attended to patients. At one point, as they'd laughed hysterically about something Jacob had said, he even forgot she was with the big hulking Cullen.
Jackie had just finished with her last patient, when a group of young men walked past. They were all shirtless, in shorts and like Jake, had short cropped hair. It wasn't a bad thing, it was just untraditional compared to the other men within the tribe.
"Hey Jacob," one of them called out, "we wondered where you'd been all day."
"Traitor!" Paul screamed at him through there mind link.
"What is that supposed to mean," Jacob shot back. Unbeknownst to Jackie, the question actually served a dual purpose.
A younger and much smaller boy at the back of the group smirked. "We thought maybe you had a new girlfriend," he teased.
"Yeah, another vampire girl, just like Bella," Paul snarked through the wolf link. "The big one's stench, who tried to cross our boarder last night, is all over her," he added. "Maybe we should teach him a lesson using her."
Jacob jumped out of his chair with such force, the chair flew backwards. He came to stand in front of Jackie in defense.
Jackie watched the scene brfore her with eyebrows knitted in confusion. She could sense the tension between Jacob and the other boy, but she had no idea why.
"That's enough!" A deep voice commanded. As Sue wheeled Billy around the corner of the porch, Jackie saw who the owner of the voice belonged to. A man, in his early to mid thirties walked over to the group. He was tall but not nearly as built as Jacob. He too was shirtless and wearing cut off shorts.
"She is still a human!" His voice rang out in their minds.
"It's time to go," he said, commanding the group.
Jackie sighed in relief as one by one, the young men all ran towards the woods.
The man who appeared to Jackie to be a leader of some sorts, looked over at Jacob. "Don't be too long," he instructed.
Jacob nodded his head as Sam ran off towards the same direction as the other boys.
Jumping off the porch, Jacob ran over and took the wheel chair from Sue and pushed Billy up the ramp.
"I'm sorry you had to see that," Sue whispered to Jackie.
"I just wish I knew what it was I saw," she replied.
"Just a disagreement," Billy explained. "It's good to see you again," he smiled at Jackie. "Will you be joining us for dinner again?"
"No, I'm sorry," Jackie shook her head. "I really need to get back to Emmett and the girls."
"Emmett Cullen?" Billy questioned.
Jackie inhaled sharply, biting down on her bottom lip. She hadn't meant to say his name. She silently cursed herself, wondered if they would now ban her from their lands too.
"Um... ya-yes," she replied nervously.
"Well then," Billy paused, "we shouldn't keep them waiting now should we?" he smiled at her.
Jackie let out a breath she didn't even know she had been holding in.
"Son, why don't you load up her things," Billy told Jake.
Suddenly it dawned on her. "Jake is your son?" Jackie asked.
"Jacob Black," he bowed mockingly, "at your service," he grinned as he picked up the boxes and headed towards Jackie's truck.
"Bella would really like you to call her," she called to him from the porch, relaying Bella's message. She couldn't help but notice how Jacob stiffened at the mention of her name.
"Yeah, that's not going to happen," he answered sarcastically.
"I don't know what's going on, but I can tell she really needs you." Jackie tried to persuade him.
Jacob seemed deep in thought for a moment before answering. "Maybe I'll call her, I guess," he muttered.
"Right now her and Edward are in Florida visiting her mom so maybe wait till..."
"What?!" Jacob practically yelled cutting her off.
"I...I'm confused," Jackie furrowed her eyebrows.
"She's out of town with him? Alone?" Jacob was furious.
"I guess so, but they're with her mother so.."
Jacob cut her off again. "And you're stupid enough to believe that?"
"Jacob!" Sue warned.
"No!" Jacob shouted. He was beginning to shake with anger. "She needs to the truth about them before..."
"Jacob!" Sam yelled for him, standing at the edge of the woods.
"Go," Billy instructed his son.
Jacob glared at Jackie before running off into the woods.
