Chapter Twenty

Being on break was so nice. It was even better than the weekend in my opinion. I could laze around as long as I wanted, sleep in, and if you didn't know already what the best part of break is, I'll tell you.

No homework! Well...I have homework but that can wait. Or maybe I could get rid of it...? No, Lance will get upset with me.

I sighed as my stomach grumbled, reminding me that I needed food. This calls for some bagel bites. I left my room and smiled to myself as I walked down the stairs.

I really loved being on break.

I walked into the kitchen which was empty and opened up the freezer only to freeze myself when I saw that the spot where my bagel bites usually are is vacant. Where are my bagel bites?

I know I didn't eat them all because Roman is always keeping track of how many I eat since he says they're unhealthy. I closed the freezer and opened the fridge door and when I didn't see them in there either, I frowned.

Someone ate my bagel bites.

"Ceres? You alright?" Ares asked when he walked into the kitchen, noticing that I was frowning. I closed the fridge door and crossed my arms.

"Someone ate my bagel bites" I said sourly.

"That's horrible, kiddo" Ares said after giving an audible gasp. I nodded. It truly was horrible.

I needed to find the culprit who did this wrongdoing so that I can get justice. I pointed at Ares who looked at me in confusion.

"You are now my partner. We're gonna find out who ate them" I said and Ares seemed to give a nervous chuckle to which I narrowed my eyes.

"It isn't that serious. We can always go out and-"

"Silence, partner. I'm the lead detective here, you just need to follow me" I said and Ares gave up on protesting but it didn't stop him from grumbling things under his breath.

"Why am I the partner?"

I headed off to my room to get the necessary items needed to conduct our investigation. My glasses, keychain flashlight, and a magnifying glass before heading over to Ares' room.

"Where do you think we should start?" I asked and Ares shrugged.

"You're the lead detective, follow your gut or whatever they do in the TV shows" Ares said and I frowned at him. Useless partner.

"My gut is not working right now. It's hungry" I said.

"Well, we can start with Max, I guess" he said and I nodded. The two of us walked over to Max's room and I knocked before waiting for an answer.

It sounded like Max was getting out of bed before the door opened and he looked at us. When his eyes landed on me, he raised a brow.

"What's with the get up? It isn't Halloween" he said referring to my formal clothes. I had to look professional while on duty after all. I shook my head at him before pushing up my glasses.

"We have some questions to ask you" I said before walking in and Ares followed behind me. I looked around the room for any signs that it could have been Max who ate my bagel bites. So far, there was nothing but a bunch of used and new canvases, paint pallets and brushes, and used clothes in the corner that was covered in paint.

"Sure come in" Max said sarcastically before walking over to us.

"This room is a mess, no wonder you found a rock in your shoe" Ares said and Max glared.

"I didn't invite you in here to talk about the state of my room. Matter of fact, I didn't invite you in at all" he said and Ares shrugged.

"What do you need? Hurry up and ask it then get the hell out" Max said turning to me. I held my magnifying glass up to Max's lips and he looked at me in confusion as I inspected the corner of his lips.

There weren't any crumbs or sauce on it but he could have easily wiped away the evidence.

"What were you doing between dinner last night until around 11 am today?" I asked while walking around the room, occasionally stopping to use my flashlight and magnifying glass to inspect Max's room.

"What?" Max asked.

"Just answer the question" Ares said with his arms crossed and Max scoffed.

"After dinner I came up here and showered and then for the rest of the night I painted. See that canvas? The paint is still drying" He said pointing to the canvas on the easel. I walked over to it and indeed, the paint was still wet and I could smell the faint scent of the paint he used.

I nodded before walking back over to him.

"What the hell is this all about anyways?" Max asked. I put my hand out and gestured for Max to show me his hands. After inspecting them with my glass, I hummed.

"Someone ate the kid's bagel bites" Ares said.

"You've got to be kidding me..." he muttered but I heard him loud and clear. He may think this is not important but to me it very much is. One doesn't just get to take another's stuff and get away with it. It's wrong and mean. And now I'm hungry because of it.

"He's clean" I said to Ares and Max sighed. I turned back to Max and asked my next question.

"Do you have any ideas of who could have done it?" I asked.

"I don't know. Ask Kade" He said and upon seeing my look of confusion he scoffed.

"Don't be fooled by that guy's innocent act. He's a wolf in sheep's clothing after all" Max said and Ares chuckled at the analogy.

I found it hard to believe his words though. Kade has been nothing but nice to me. He loved doing different styles for my hair, helped me with my homework, and even tried to set up a skin care routine for me. He was so sincere in the way he did things that I found it hard to believe that he would betray me in such a way.

Speaking of Kade, he had appeared out of nowhere right behind Max who still had yet to notice him.

"Hmm? A wolf in sheep's clothing? Then I suppose I should eat you up, right?" Kade said as he put an arm around Max's neck who all but let out a girly shriek at his brother's sudden appearance.

"Quit joking around, it's disgusting!" Max yelled as he struggled to get away from Kade's death grip.

"Why does this always happen to me?!"

We were all eventually kicked out of Max's room as he slammed his door with Kade just barely out of it and Kade pouted when the door hit him on the way out.

"I was just kidding..." he said with his pout still on his face.

I guess since Kade is here now, he'll be our next suspect.

"Can you lean down please?" I asked and although confused, Kade did it without asking questions which made it easier for me. I repeated my process of inspecting Kade's face like I did to Max.

"Are you fascinated by my looks?" He asked curiously and I just shook my head.

"I'm looking for evidence" I said as I grabbed his hands and inspected them. His hands were very soft and his nails were perfectly manicured and clean, curtesy of himself. They were different from Max's as his hands were always stained with paint.

"Evidence of my good looks?" This time Ares groaned.

"No one cares about your face you idiot. Someone ate Ceres' bagel bites and you're just a suspect" Ares explained and Kade frowned.

"You think I did it? How cruel, I would never do something like that" Kade said as his pout was now back in place.

"I don't think you did it, but you are only innocent until found guilty so I'm gonna need to inspect your room now" I said and Kade nodded before leading us to his room.

After inspecting his room and seeing that it was clear, I asked him some questions before thanking him for cooperating and leaving his room with Ares trailing behind me.

Next we ended up at Roman's door.

I knocked and it was quiet for a moment before I heard a thump which had both me and Ares jumping.

"The hell was that?" Ares asked and he was about to barge in there but Roman had opened the door before he could.

Ares and I were met with the sight of a tired Roman and his eyes were barely opened as he stared at us. Did he just wake up? I could see that it was dark in his room since all the curtains were closed.

"Is there something I can help you with?" He asked with a short yawn following after. I hesitated a little to interrogate him. It was clear that he had gotten little to no sleep probably working and I felt bad already that we had waken him up.

"Damn bro, you aren't looking so great" Ares said referring to the bags underneath Roman's eyes.

Roman yawned again before opening the door wider so that the two of us could come in. We looked at each other before going in. Once in, Ares turned on the light and I could see that Roman's bed was still neatly made as if he hadn't even been in it. His lamp was on the ground, that was probably what made the thumping noise.

"Sorry if I'm not the most pleasant at the moment...I've had a rough couple of days" Roman said rubbing his neck and tilting his head in an attempt to soothe the ache.

"Yeah, there's no way this guy did it" Ares muttered and I nodded in agreement.

"What is it that you two needed?" Roman asked and we shook our heads.

"Uh...we were just checking on you" I said and Ares nodded his head to back up my words.

"Yeah, instead, is there anything you need? He asked and Roman shook his head before mustering up a smile that was full of tiredness.

"I'm alright. You guys checking in on me is enough for me" Roman said.

"You're allowed to take breaks, y'know that right?" Ares asked and Roman nodded.

"Yeah, I was planning on taking a break today so I tried to finish up a lot last night" Roman said.

"Are you sure there isn't anything we can do?" I asked and Roman shook his head again.

"It's alright. Don't worry about me. I just need to catch up on some sleep" He said and we both nodded before leaving the room.

"He seemed to be in a bad mood" Ares said and I nodded.

"Yeah, his work must be taking a toll on him" I said and Ares shook his head.

"Not because of his work. Something else just seemed to be bothering him?" He said stroking his imaginary beard.

"Well, I'm sure it'll be okay. For now, let's continue our investigation" I said and Ares just nodded before leading us to our next suspect, Lucas.

Now, it wouldn't really surprise me if Lucas was the one who ate them. He was known as the garbage can of the house after all but then again, I have to keep in mind; everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

Ares had left my side briefly to use the bathroom so I proceeded to investigate Lucas by myself.

"What is this about anyways?" Lucas asked after I finished inspecting him.

"We are trying to find the culprit that ate my bagel bites" I said and just then Ares walked back into the room. Lucas looked at him and then to me before looking back at Ares.

Lucas gestured for me to come closer and I did. Once I was close enough, Lucas bent down and whispered into my ear so that Ares couldn't hear what he was saying.

"Here's a hint. The culprit is closer to you than you think" Lucas said with a wink as he pulled away and my eyes widened.

"It was you..." I muttered as I turned around and Ares looked at me confused. If he even was confused. Has he been pretending this entire time? And helping me look when it was him the whole time?

"Woah Kiddo, don't you want to question Lance before jumping to conclusions?" He asked.

"Lance hasn't been here for the past two days, he's on a business trip with Dad. You would know that if you responded to our group chat messages or even just took a look around" Lucas said and all the while I just stood there in shock and utter disbelief.

I can't believe it. My own partner betrayed me...

I backed away from Ares as he tried to take a step towards me.

"Hey, kiddo. We can talk about this right?" He said and I shook my head vigorously.

"I'm not your kiddo anymore..." Ares' eyes widened at my words and it took everything in me to not apologize and say I didn't mean it. I pointed a conviction filled finger at Ares.

"Ares Spencer, you are under arrest for the heinous crime of eating my bagel bites. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against-"

"Are you seriously arresting me over some bagel bites?!"

I ignored his outburst and continued to finish my statement.

"Take him away" I said to Lucas and he nodded before grabbing Ares and leading him out of the room.

"Kiddo! We can talk about this!"

I shut my eyes tightly as to avoid giving in and showing him the hurt in my eyes. I could never forgive him for his wrong doing. Maybe some day, but that some day just wasn't today.
