Chapter Forty Four
This morning, it was eerily tense.
The reason being that Lance seemed to be upset. About what? I have no idea but with the way he was stabbing the poor eggs on his plate said it all.
"So, Honey, are you ready for your race today?" Kade asked as he tried to take away from the fact that there was a huge elephant in the room.
Today was Field Day and all of us had decided that instead of doing different things, we'd just participate in the baton pass. I for one really didn't want to but since my participation was being considered for a final grade, I had no choice in the matter.
"No...I really don't want to" I said in between bites of my food.
"Yeah, I don't understand why they make us do this every year" Max said. To my knowledge, Max was going to be competing in the treasure hunt since he said it was the easiest.
"What are you complaining about? This is your last year doing it. Shouldn't you feel sad about it?" Roman asked.
"Sad? Why the hell would I feel sad? If anything, I'll be glad when I graduate from that jail facility" Max said.
"Hmm, how about this? If you win, I'll get you a prize" Kade said and Max frowned.
"What? You're gonna give me a wallet sized photo of you?" Max asked and when Kade went silent, Max just looked at him in disgust.
"You can keep your prize" Max grumbled.
Once everyone was finished eating, Lance spoke up.
"Lucas, Ares. Do you mind if we speak?" Lance asked and the strained tone in his voice had immediately alerted the two.
I just looked on curiously as they all left the room. I guess they had something to do with the reason why Lance was upset.
~ THIRD P.O.V ~
As the two were walking behind Lance, Ares and Lucas' eyes met and they began having their mind conversation again.
'What do you think he wants?' - Ares
'I don't know...you did put it back in the same spot, right?' - Lucas
'Yes, I even made sure it looked perfect' - Ares
Lucas averted his eyes once they reached Lance's room, effectively ending their conversation.
"Do you guys...notice anything different? There's like, this off feeling but I just can't put my finger on it. I was hoping you two could help me figure it out" Lance said as he leaned up against his desk, purposely next to the snow globe, and crossed his arms.
Lucas could already tell by the look in Lance's eyes and his obvious words, that he had found out and he was about to surrender but Ares beat him to it.
"Okay, when we were cleaning I accidentally broke the snow globe but I totally didn't mean to, it just kind of fell off the desk? And instead of telling you we bought a new one and hoped you wouldn't notice and I'm really, really, really, sorry!" Ares said in one breath and Lucas just groaned.
Lance rose an eyebrow at Ares' "forced confession".
"So, instead of just telling me right out, which I promise you I would have appreciated more, you thought it would be a good idea to replace it?" Lance said and Ares gave a shaky nod.
"Well, you are right. That was a good idea, too bad you forgot to take the price tag off, hmm?" Lance said as held up the globe and showed them the bottom of it.
Lucas looked at Ares with a look that said 'you fucking idiot' and Ares just groaned at his stupidity. How hard was it to remember to take the price tag off?
"And Lucas, how exactly did you get roped into this?" Lance asked and Lucas sighed.
"I don't know..." he muttered
Lance gave a shake of his head and it was silent for a moment. Ares was hoping that Lance would say something soon because the silence was only adding to the guilt that was already eating him up inside.
"Ares" Lance said looking at Ares who just froze up, already knowing that he was going to be picked for punishment first.
"W-What...?" Ares stuttered out.
"As punishment, you have to clean the shed" Lance said and Ares could swear that he felt a tear slip out.
Sure he hated the attic, but the shed was a million times worse and he wouldn't wish that upon even his worst enemy. Just thinking about all the creepy crawlers that lived in there was giving Ares shivers.
"Lucas, you're going to help him" He said and Lucas gave a short nod.
"That's not so bad" Lucas said and Lance gave a small smile.
"And if there's any bugs, let Ares deal with it" Lance said and Ares' face crumbled.
"And don't even think about doing it for him. He deserves to suffer" Lance said and the sadistic look that he was giving Ares, alarmed both of his brothers.
"You're cruel!" Ares cried before running out of the room like a school girl after being rejected by her crush.
Lucas just shook his head at him.
"Lucas, I hope you know that I let you off easy. I was very tempted to tell him to get rid of your little make shift rock garden in your room" Lance said and Lucas paled.
"You can't do that, that's their habitat. You'd destroy their home..." Lucas argued weakly and Lance glared.
"Lucas, the bugs they attract are invading our home" He said with a sigh.
Lucas just frowned before leaving the room. Lance always knew how to hit them where it hurts and in this case, Lucas had just barely dodged the bullet.

"Are you ready guys?" Ross asked as we all met up dressed in our gym uniforms.
I had just gotten away from my brothers who were all trying to give me tips on how to win but honestly, I had no intentions of actually trying to win. I was only doing this for a grade anyways.
"I just want to get this over with already" I said truthfully.
We were having small chatter amongst ourselves until a new voice cut in.
"Ready for defeat, Ross?" Ross turned his head and his eyes narrowed into a glare when he saw Brad (his rival as he likes to call him) walking over to us.
"As if that's gonna happen" Ross said nonchalantly and I looked between the both of them. It was as if lightning was clashing between their eyes as they glared at one another.
"Oh! I know! To have some real fun, let's have a race!" Diana said excitedly and we all looked at her.
"But Diana...this is already a race" Hayden said.
"Yeah but I mean like between ourselves! It can be a little competition amongst us" She cheered.
"That's stupid" Brad said.
"Oh, c'mon Brad, don't be a wuss" Ross said grinning, knowing that insulting Brad's pride was a good way to get him motivated.
"What did you just say?" Brad asked while returning Ross' amused look with a glare.
"Don't. Be. A. Wuss" Ross taunted again and at Ross' taunt, a dangerous glint flashed in Brad's eyes.
I just heaved another sigh. What exactly was the point in all of this? I was with Hayden on this one, was the race at hand not enough?
"As if I'd let some mama's boy like you talk me down" Brad said and Ross grinned, ignoring the insult that Brad had thrown.
"Okay but I don't get why we have to participate..." Hayden muttered as he stood next to me and I had completely agreed.
Suddenly, Ross was next to Hayden and whispered something into his ear. Just like that, Hayden's apathy towards the race had vanished as a new look of determination crossed his face.
Just what did Ross tell him?
"Look you guys, it's simple. We're all on different teams but whoever's team wins, is declared the winner of our little competition" Diana said.
"What do we get if we win?" Brad asked.
"Uh...whatever the winner wants I guess? Oh! The person who wins get to ask one of the losers to do something!" Diana said and Brad grinned.
"Sounds fair" he said.
That didn't sound fair to me...I was never good at P.E., even in my old school. I was sure to lose this competition. Well, it isn't that bad when I actually think about it. I don't think there's anything I would want to ask from the others anyways.
"All students participating in the baton pass, please take your places on the track" the voice on the overhead speaker spoke and we all gathered to get in our places.
I was the starting runner for my team which was truly the worst position they could give me. Ross and Brad were the last runners while Hayden and Diana were the middle runners.
Before I could step into my place, I felt my hand being grabbed and I saw that it was Hayden.
"Ceres, I just want you to know that I'm going to give it my all in this race and it's not because of those idiots stupid agreement" he said and I tilted my head, wondering what his point was.
"EXCUSE ME, CAN YOU STAND SEVERAL FEET AWAY FROM MY BABY?!"
We both looked over to the audience and saw Kade staring at us with his arms crossed but then Lance yanked him back down into his seat.
"S-Sorry..." I muttered and Hayden just gave a small laugh.
"It's alright. Just don't forget to watch me, okay?" He said and I gave a small smile before nodding. Hayden returned my smile with a small grin before winking and leaving off to his spot.
His eyes had a fire that burned bright than the sun and if I was being totally honest here, I felt kind of excited to watch Hayden.
I went to my spot and as I was waiting for the race to start, I heard the shouts of my brothers.
"YOU GOT THIS KIDDO!!" Ares yelled.
"YEAH, DON'T LET THESE SCHOOL BOYS SHOW YOU UP HONEY!" Kade exclaimed.
"PUT THEIR NASTY ASSES IN THE DIRT!!" Max screamed.
The three of them continued to shout nonsense and I just gave them a thumbs up before turning back to my spot.
"Okay! Everyone," the announcer started speaking and that was my cue to get in to a ready position. I could only hope that I would at least be able to hand off my baton successfully.
"On your marks, get set, go!" The announcer yelled and like that, all us first runners started running.
It wasn't surprising that I was in last place already but I found myself not minding as much as I probably should.
"Yeah, Ceres!! Keep going!!" Hearing the cheers of my friends only fired me up more to keep running and even though my heart felt like it was going to explode out of its chest, I kept running.
I could see the second runner of my team and I was neck and neck with a boy from the other team. I pushed myself to at least pass him and when I saw that my efforts were working, I found myself grinning and I finally reached the second runner up and passed my baton off.
"YOU DID AMAZING HONEY!!!"
"YEAH, YOU LEFT THAT SISSY IN THE DUST!!"
I couldn't help but laugh at how easily I could hear Ares and Kade even though they were so far away.
I had just remembered that Hayden should be running soon and I turned my eyes just in time to see him being passed the baton.
My eyes widened when I saw Hayden take off the way he did. He had literally left his first runner in the dust as he sprinted way past all the other runners and straight into first. I didn't know that it was possible for someone to be able to run so fast and my heart sped up just thinking about how cool Hayden looked.
Or maybe I was still feeling tired from my own running?
"T-That's inhuman" I heard someone mutter next to me and I couldn't help but think the same in a way. Without breaking a sweat, Hayden had effortlessly reached the next runner and handed them the baton.
"Come on you tortoise, hurry up and get over here!" I heard Brad yelled at his teammate as he waited impatiently for them to hand him the baton. Brad's team was now in fourth place thanks to Hayden's sprint with Diana's team in third and Ross's team in second.
My team was in last unfortunately but I didn't really mind.
I saw Diana hand off her own baton and she turned quickly to start cheering.
"Ross, it's almost your turn. Do your best!" Diana cheered and someone on her team glared at her.
"Are you seriously rooting for the other team?!"
From what I could see, Ross' team was now in the lead, and all the last runners had prepared themselves for the final stretch.
Ross' runner had finally reached him and passed him the baton but I gasped when I saw Ross trip up at the start of his run.
"Ross!" Hayden exclaimed when he saw Ross fall but Ross just shook his head and got up to keep running.
By now, I had regrouped with Hayden and Diana and we were standing at the finish line waiting for the last runners to make it here.
Ross had managed to catch up with Brad but something in me knew that he wouldn't be able to surpass Brad. That fall he took looked pretty painful.
"Ooh, you're almost there Ross!!!" Diana cheered and this time Hayden was with her.
"You can do it!" They cheered together and I could see their teammates shaking their heads. After all, they were cheering for someone that wasn't even on their team.
Brad and Ross were neck and neck but at the last second, Brad pushed himself through the finish line and as soon as he did, Ross dropped to the ground in order to catch his breath.
"Ross!" We rushed over to him and Ross looked up at us.
"I guess I lost, huh?" He said with a chuckle.
"Well, it doesn't matter. You did your best!" Diana said and I nodded.
"You did as much as you could and that's what matters" I said and Ross let out a breathy laugh.
"Yeah...can't believe I lost to that guy though" he said with a dejected sigh.
"Ross" Brad said as he came over to us and Ross just gave him a tired smile.
"Yes?" He humored.
"I want you to get better" he said and we all looked at Brad wide eyed.
"Get better?" Ross asked.
"I saw how you fell, that was sloppy on your part. Brush up your act and then challenge me to a race for real. Then it'll be fair" Brad said and Ross laughed at Brad's words.
"Don't go trying to act like the humble rival. If you want to rub it in my face go ahead. You won fair and square after all" Ross said and Brad grinned.
"Nah, I'll rub it in when I win our next race. See ya later, loser" Brad said before heading off the track.
"Maybe Brad isn't such a bad guy" Diana said and Ross shook his head.
"Nah, he's still an ass" He said as he tried to stand up but the moment he put pressure on his left foot, he had crumbled. Thankfully, Hayden was quick enough to steady him.
"What's wrong?" I asked worriedly.
"I think I hurt myself when I fell" Ross said as he tried not to put so much weight on his left side.
"You may have twisted your ankle" Hayden said and suddenly, did something that surprised us all.
Hayden had lifted Ross up bridal style without so much as a second thought and Ross' face flushed red in embarrassment.
"H-Hey?! W-What are you doing?!" He exclaimed as he struggled in Hayden's grip.
"Now that's not something you see everyday" Ares said with a grin as all of my brothers had came over and joined us on the track.
From the corner of my eye, I could see Diana quickly pulling out her phone.
"Boy's love~" she said while taking the picture.
"Please stop moving. You might fall" Hayden said while adjusting Ross in his arms. That only seemed to anger Ross further.
"Put me down! I can walk!" Ross yelled.
"Putting any pressure on your foot may make it worse than it already is. I'll put you down once we get to the infirmary" Hayden said before walking off to the infirmary with a still complaining Ross.
"Wow, that kid has some muscle" Max said and I nodded.
"Hmph, it was clear that he's just trying to impress Ceres. However, it didn't work! Right, Honey?" I know Kade was talking but I was hardly listening as I was still watching Hayden and Ross continue to bicker as they made their way to the infirmary.
"Oh yeah, it looks like it worked alright" Hearing Ares' voice seemed to break me out of my trance and I turned to my brothers.
"You did great, Ceres" Roman said and Lucas, who was next to him, nodded.
"How about we all go out for a treat, yeah? Your friends can come as well if they want" Lance said and I smiled before looking to Diana.
"Wanna come with us?" I asked and Diana gave a quick nod.
"Sure, I'm just gonna go check on those two and let them know" she said before heading off in the direction of the infirmary.
"Hm, now what should we eat?" Roman mused.
"...bagel-"
"No."
