Ch. 7

"Give me your hand." Hiccup pulled her to her feet, but didn't let go of Astrid's hand.
"Is our hut on fire?" She asked, smelling smoke in the air.
"No, its just smoking. We need to get you to Gothi's, Astrid." Besides a gash on his forehead Hiccup seemed fine. Astrid on the other hand, couldn't see a thing. Her eyes were glossed over and her entire body was covered in dirt and cuts from splinters of wood. For a minute or so she was so disoriented she didn't know who was talking to her.
"Who's Gothi?"
Hiccup's eyes widened. "Uhh the healer? Astrid do you know who I am?"
"No?"
"Astrid it's me. Hiccup."
"Who?"
"I'm your husband." His hand came up to cup her cheek and that seemed to knock her out of it.
"Oh... OH. Hiccup we need gothi right now. As in this instantF!"
"Okay, okay calm down it's alright. Everythings gonna be fine."
"No, Hiccup you don't understand." She cried frantically, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm pregnant! The fall could have hurt the baby!"
Hiccup almost fainted at that, but he told himself he didn't have time for that. "Astrid, I promise you that everything will be okay. Lets get you to gothi"
"Okay..'
He gently scooped her into his arms and hurried towards gothi's hut. As he began hiking up the long trail of steps to the healer's hut, he had a flashback of the last time Astrid had lost her sight. They had all been so young.. Hiccup had barely been able to pull her out of the burning stables. And now? Carrying his wife didn't even cause him to break a sweat. And another difference? Astrid wasn't pregnant last time! How could she be pregnant? He understood the basic principles of life but he still didn't understand. Him? Hiccup Haddock a future father? Great Odin's Ghost.
His foot caught on the last step, causing him to lose his balance slightly. He felt Astrid's arms tense around him.
"I've got you." He whispered reassuringly, then kicked Gothi's door. The old lady was at the door so fast it was as if she had been waiting for them. She ushered them in, having Hiccup set Astrid down on a bed.
Astrid wouldn't let her even look at her cuts until she made sure the baby was okay. So after a quick exam, Gothi confirmed that the baby was just fine.
Hiccup released a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. Tears once again leaked form the corners of Astrid's eyes, but this time tears of relief.
"The babys okay? She's okay?"
Gothi nodded, then set to work on bandaging her eyes.
"Hey, how do you know it's a girl?" Hiccup chuckled.
"I have a feeling."
It wasn't long and Gothi had Astrid all fixed up. As long as she left the bandage on her eyes, her eyesight should return in two to three weeks.
When Gothi was about to send them home, she noticed Hiccup's cut had started bleeding quite heavily. That's when Valka ran inside. "Astrid, are you alright?"
"Yes, we're fine."
"Hiccup?"
Everyone turned to see him sprawled on the ground, blood pooled around his head and caked in his bangs. Well, except Astrid. But she knew something was wrong. She could sense it.
"Hiccup!" Astrid screamed, fearing the worst. "Why isn't he answering me? Valka what's going on?"
Valka had to hold Astrid back the entire time Gothi worked on him. "He's going to be fine, Astrid." she whispered gently. "I promise. But you have to calm down or you'll put the baby in even more stress than its been through tonight."
"I can't!" she cried, desperately trying to break through her mother in law's tight grip. "I can't even see what's happening! How do I know you're not lying to me? You have to let me get to him! Hiccup! Answer me!"
"He's unconscious, Astrid. He's lost a lot of blood. But he's going to be fine."
"What if he's not?!" She tried to wrestle free once again but it was just no use.
"You need to calm down before you miscarry, Astrid. I know this is scary, but it's going to be alright. Just breathe."
She felt the tears dripping off her chin. She could hear her heart pounding in her ears. She could feel her baby moving in her stomach. She didn't feel Hiccup's hands in hers. She couldn't even feel his presence. It terrified her. But Valka was right. She had to calm down now. So, she took a deep breath, and made herself stop. She stopped fighting, stopped crying, stopped going frantic. Astrid sighed shakily, exhaling all of the stress and negativity out of her body, as though using a vacuum. She would not allow herself to lose this baby.
"There you go," Valka nodded. "You've got it."
She did it again and again until she could breathe normally and the pounding in her ears stopped.
"Are you alright?"
"All I can do is keep breathing."
***********************one week later**************************
"Astrid. Wake up, dear."
She burst upright, looking around frantically until she remembered she was blind. "Is he okay?"
"Ask him yourself."
"He's awake?!"
"Yes he is." Valla chuckled. "Well...he's waking up. I figured you'd want to be there when he woke up. But remember, Gothi said he won't remember what you told him."
"I remember. It works out, now I get to surprise him."
"That's a great idea." Valka smiled. "Alright then, lets go."
***********************************************************************************
He awoke to see Astrid sitting beside him, gauze wrapped around her head, covering her eyes.
"Hey there, sleepy head."
"Astrid?" he groaned, sitting up and rubbing his aching head. "How long was I out?"
" A week."
"A week?! Jeeze!"
"Yea, you scared the crap out of all of us. Do you remember what happened?"
"Our good buddy Lightning struck our house, made you go temporarily blind... again. And it looks like your sight isn't back yet. We were at Gothi's, she had just finished bandaging your head when my mom walked in. I started feeling dizzy and that's all I remember."
"That about sums it up." Astrid chuckled. She bent down as though she were going to kiss him, but stopped short, her voice dropping to menacing tones. "I swear to all that's holy, if you don't stop going into comas, I. WILL. KILL YOU."
"My apologies. Ma'am." Hiccup smirked.
"Are you seriously smirking right now?! You'd better not be! I'm serious! Valka, is he smirking?"
"Oh c'mere, you." He pulled her downward, his lips pressing to hers for the first time in way too long.
***********
They were standing in front of the remains of their scorched hut. Astrid still hadn't regained her sight, but Gothi told them she'd be getting it back any day now. Hiccup was back on his feet and ready to build. Astrid was ready to tell Hiccup the big news, the right way this time. And she had the perfect idea.
"I was thinking... maybe we should build it a bit bigger this time."
"Our hut?" Hiccup arched an eyebrow at her, forgetting that she couldn't see him. It was habit.
"Yea. A couple extra bedrooms... a small room connected to ours. A bigger kitchen. Maybe a nice living room with a fireplace?"
"You're serious? You want a family sized hut? Why?"
Astrid couldn't help but smile. "Well... when Haddock number four moves in we might want some extra room."
His eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. "Haddock number four...?" Then it clicked. "Oh my gods! You're pregnant?!"
   "Yes!"
He hugged her and spun her around in the air. "We're gonna be parents!"
"Yes we are! You're going be a father, Hiccup!"
   "I'm gonna be a father!"
