Ch. 15

*Five years have passed*

An uproar of screaming erupted in the Haddock household one early morning. Hiccup groaned and hid his head under the pillows.

"Give it back!"

"Make me!"

"Your children are awake." Astrid murmured.

"Before breakfast they are your children."

"You better give it back!!"

"No! I'm playing with it!"

"But it's mine!"

"You weren't using it anyways!"

"Give it!!!"

"Make me, snot eater!"

"Dragon breath!"

"Shorty!"

"RED HEAD!!"

There was a huge clatter and something sounded like it had broke. The next wail of tears had Hiccup out of the bed in a heartbeat.

"What in Thor's name is going on in here?" His eyes landed upon his children, Zephyr and Nuffink, wrestling on the ground. In their struggle, they had knocked over the dresser and everything on top of it.

"Take it back!!" Zephyr had finally managed to get above Nuffink, and now had his arm pulled behind him.

"No!"

"Take it back, Nuff!!"

"Of for the love of-! Stop it!" Hiccup hurried over and snatched Nuffink out of Zephyr's grasp.

Astrid arrived just then, looking red in the face. "What in-? You two better have a good explanation for this. Look what you did to your dresser! Daddy spent an entire week making that for you!"

"She took my gronkle!" Nuffink growled, glaring at his sister.

"He wasn't even playing with it!" Zephyr death glared him back.

"It's still mine, fish for brains!"

"Oh that's it!" Zephyr launched herself at Nuffink and Hiccup was forced to hold his son higher up.

"Hey!" Astrid grabbed Zephyr and restrained her.

Hiccup sighed and shook his head. How many times do we have to tell you, fighting doesn't fox anything?"

Astrid set Zephyr down and gave her the face every angry mother gets. "You know better. I'm disappointed in both of you."

"Sorry Mommy.." The two children chimed.

"Don't apologize to me." Astrid crossed her arms. "You should be apologizing to your father. Now he has to fix the dresser he made just for you."

Zephyr turned and looked at the dresser, broken into three separate pieces.

"I'm sorry Dad.."

"Me too." Piped Nuffink.

"Let's just go down and get some breakfast, alright?" Hiccup said.

So after a delicious breakfast Hiccup and Astrid sent the kids outside to play while they cleaned up.

"Thor, they scared me." Hiccup sighed. "What if that dresser had landed on top of them?"

"They're alright, Hiccup." Astrid smiled. "They're siblings. Fighting is bound to happen."

"I just didn't expect them to fight so much."

Astrid chuckled and kissed the top of his head. "They'll settle down when school starts up again."

"You're probably right." He nodded. "Well, I'm gonna go try and fix the dresser before we leave for the meeting."

Gobber walked into the workshop, finding Hiccup sanding a piece of wood.

"Mornin' Chief." He greeted happily.

"Hey, Gobber." Hiccup replied.

"Watcha workin' on?"

"Well.. My oh so lovely offspring were fighting this morning and ended up breaking their dresser. I'm trying to get it fixed before Astrid and I have to leave."

"No luck getting ahold of the father?"

"Nope." He shook his head. "I don't get it Gobber. How could anyone just pack up and leave their kid? I'd lose my mind if I lost Zephyr or Nuffink.."

Gobber shrugged. "Well lad, not everyone was raised to know better I suppose."

"That's just-its should be- you don't just leave your kid!" Hiccup exclaimed. "That little girl is scared, and tired! Her father left her and now her mother is dying! What kind of messed up Loki meddling is that?"

Gobber stared at him wide-eyed. "Are you alright?"

"No. Yes. I-I'm fine. Its just upsetting." Hiccup finished sanding the wood and began to nail the dresser back together.

"I understand. But you're helping her now."

He nodded. "Thanks Gobber."

Astrid finished tidying the kitchen and went to the back door.

"Kids! Time to come inside!"

"Awe, man!" Nuffink dropped a stick he'd been using as a sword.

"But mama!" Zephyr whined. "We were just getting to the good part!"

"You'll be late for school. Come on."

Both children slumped into the house.

"I wish school was cancelled." Nuffink grumbled.

Astrid smiled and rolled her eyes. "Awe come on, Nuff. I thought you liked school."

"Only on the days when we have climbing lessons."

"I see. Everyone have their stuff? Don't forget your bag, Zephyr."

Just then Valka arrived.

"Grandma!!" The children shouted, attacking her with hugs.

"Hello, sweet ones." She chuckled, kissing both of her grandchildren on the head. "How are you this morning?"

"In a word: Destructive." Astrid replied for them.

"Uh oh. What have you children done this time?"

" ...nothing."

Valka looked towards Astrid.

"They broke the dresser Hiccup made for them."

"Oh good gracious!" Valka stood and shooed them out the door. "Then it's off to school naughty ones."

"Awe come on!"

"No fair!"

"Goodbye, love you." Astrid chuckled and shut the door behind them.
