Ch. 13

"I really need to go, Fishlegs." Hiccup said, an apologetic look on his face. "I swear, any other day I would love to geek out over this but I kind of have a thing."
Fishlegs's eyes widened. "Oooo! C'mon spill! What is it?"
Hiccup face palmed. Him and his big mouth. "If I tell you, you can't tell anyone."
"Oh come on, you know me better than that Hiccup! My lips are sealed."
"Okay.." A wide smile spread across the chief's face just thinking about it. "So... Astrid's pregnant and we're telling Zephyr tonight!"
"Oh my Thor!" Fishlegs gasped.    "That's amazing!"
"I can't believe it!" He grinned even wider. "I am so lucky!"
"Yes, now shoo! You have news to deliver!!" Fishlegs squealed.
   "I'm going!"

Hiccup shut the door behind him and began to take his armor off, leaving just his tunic and pants. As he headed into the living room a warm smile hit him.
Astrid was in the rocking chair with.  Zephyr fast asleep on top of her. There was no better sight to come home to.
He bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to both girls' heads, then headed into the kitchen. He figured he'd have supper ready when Astrid awoke for a nice little surprise.
While the food was cooking Hiccup went back into the living room and tidied up a bit, although quietly so as not to wake his girls.        They looked so precious and happy, sleeping the evening away. He hated to wake them, but he didn't want supper to get cold before they could eat it.
"Astrid," he said softly, shaking her gently.
She opened her eyes sleepily, peering up at her husband. "Hey, babe."
   "Hey there, sleepy head. Hungry?"
Astrid's eyes opened further. "Starving actually."
"Better wake up our little princess, then." He smiled.

After dinner it was time. Time to tell Zephyr she was going to be a big sister. Hiccup wasn't quite sure how she would take it. It would either go really good or really bad.
"Zephyr, mommy and daddy have something to tell you." Astrid smiled, pulling the little girl onto her lap.
   "What?"
   "Well..."
Hiccup and Astrid shared a nervous look. Hiccup finally said,    "You're going to be a big sister."
The little girl glared at her parents. "No!"
**********
Four months pregnant and Zephyr was still angry. She didn't want to be a big sister. She didn't want to share her parents. It broke Hiccup's heart, but Astrid didn't seem to be all that worried.
As they laid down for bed that night Hiccup ran a hand through his hair. "I just don't get it, Astrid."
"Hiccup, she just doesn't want to share us. She's been used to having you and me and your mom all to herself. It's a big change for her."
   "I suppose that's true.."
Astrid kissed her husband's head and laid back to sleep. "Stop worrying. Everything will be fine. As soon as this baby is born Zephyr will want to hog him or her all to herself."
Hiccup rolled over and cocooned her in his arms, just the way she liked it. But he laid awake for hours before he finally fell asleep. What would happen if Zephyr didn't like her new brother or sister? What would he do then?
A storm began to blow over Berk around 3:30 that morning. The loud cracks of thunder instantly woke Zephyr. The little girl jumped out of bed and ran to her parents room, tentatively opening the door.
It was so dark in there she almost couldn't see anything. They didn't have a night lamp like her. She stumbled to the edge of the bed and tried to climb up, but she couldn't find her little steps. Hiccup had built them that way she could get up on the bed since she was still too short to climb up. But he must have put them away. Zephyr was not happy about this. She was scared gosh darn it!
More thunder cracked and she jolted, tugging on the blankets as she did so. She whimpered as she looked up at the ceiling, always fearing the storm would break it and come to get her. "Daddy." She whimpered once again.
But Hiccup didn't wake. So she tugged on the blankets as hard as she could. Eventually, Hiccup finally stirred.
"What the-?" He said groggily as he sat up.
   "Daddy I'm scared." Zephyr whined.
He looked down and saw his little girl at the edge of the bed, holding her arms up desperately. Hiccup bent over and scooped her up, setting her in his lap.
"What's the matter baby?" He murmured.
"I don't like the noises. They're coming to get me."
"Noises can't hurt you, Zeph. It'll be alright."
She nodded and laid back down. Hiccup sighed and closed his eyes again. But too soon. Seconds later Zephyr popped again and said, "I want milk."
So much for sleep. Hiccup got out of bed, careful not to wake Astrid, and picked Zephyr up and set her on his hip. Once in the kitchen he set her on the counter and grabbed the cup he had designed for small children. The Sippy Cup. Like a bottle but different at the same time. He filled it halfway and handed it to his daughter.
"Thank you, papa." She squeaked. Then she immediately began drinking, making cooing noises as she did so. This made Hiccup smile. No matter how tired he was, Zephyr could always make him smile.
"Alright, little one. Time for sleep."
   ***
Astrid stretched and let out a yawn as the morning sun woke her. She rolled over, intending to rest her hand on Hiccup's chest, but something else was there. She let out a chuckle and kissed Zephyr's cheek.
"Hiccup, you've got something sleeping on you." She smiled.
"I do." He smiled back, peering at the small form fast asleep on his chest.
"She's so perfect, Astrid. I still can't believe we made her. Us."
"Yep. And another one on the way too."
"What did I do to deserve such happiness?"
Astrid sent him a smirk as she climbed out of bed. "Several things."
