The Four Horsemen
In case some of you are too lazy to calculate their ages (like me), here they are:
Merritt McKinney- 36 years old
J. Daniel Atlas- 34 years old
Henley Reeves- 31 years old
Jack Wilder- 20 years old
Three magicians were standing around in a hallway and meeting for the first time. J. Daniel Atlas, Henley Reeves, and Merritt McKinney. And it wasn't going well.
"O...kay. Well, seeing as I'm not the only one, let me be the first to kick my ego to the curb."
"Uh – excuse me," Danny said in a dismissive voice to the older man as he got closer but just as he did Merritt stepped away from it. "The door's locked," he warned.
"Is it?" Danny went to try to open it anyway. "I'll check."
"You," the older man said to Henley. "Now, hold it – don't tell me. Helen? No," he corrected himself. "Henley."
"It's on her coffee cup," Daniel called over his shoulder.
"Thanks for keeping me honest," Merritt drawled in a southern voice. "That wasn't mentalism by the way, just an observation. Second observation"—the irritation lessened and his eyes softened as he looked at Henley—"you are beautiful."
"Thank you," Henley said with a smile.
"That was nice. Very good, very polished bit," Daniel said in a fast pace. "I just want to say that I know who you are and I don't want you to do your mentalism thing on me. Especially since we don't know who brought us here or why we are here."
Daniel just kind of rambled on as he gave up on trying to open the door. He also tried to shake the Merritt's hand, but ended up getting the finger. Quite the chemistry we got going on here.
"Sh sh sh sh. I'm sensing . . . " Merritt suddenly said, holding a hand to his head and pointing the other vaguely towards Danny. "I'm sensing that you are a control freak." Danny looked taken aback by that statement.
"Have we met before?" Danny snapped, turning his head slightly and letting his hands rest for a moment.
Henley scoffed. "It doesn't take a mentalist to figure that one out, Danny," she informed him. "You are a control freak."
Danny only said, "Well, I take that as a compliment."
Henley laughed derisively and looked at Merritt. "Only he would take it as a compliment."
"Okay, great – good! Another compliment," Danny said in a satisfied tone
"Okay, so..." Merritt said, looking between Henley and Danny. "That's why you two are no longer a couple," he said, as though he knew everything and Danny and Henley both started denying it vehemently.
"A couple?" Danny and Henley were both honestly surprised by this, as they hurried to explain.
"Oh, we were never..."
"We were never a couple..."
Henley explained awkwardly with, "He used to...saw me in...half..."
"She was a very good assistant," Danny was trying to flatter her to show his apology.
"But, I was too fat for Danny," Henley interjected, the hurt feelings still in her eyes, even after three years.
"No, I said that one time, because of the – trap door," Danny insisted, looking embarrassed.
"You built that door – this size," Henley said, motioning with her hands to emphasize her point. "No one could fit through there – no one."
"Rebecca fit through there," Daniel sneered. "Rebecca fit through there for years."
"Do you know how hard it is to fit into those tiny little costumes?" Henley demanded, stepping forward until she was almost in his face.
Daniel scoffed. "Uh, no, I'm the main attraction."
"Okay. So he never made you feel special," Merritt said to Henley. "And, trust me; you deserve to be made to feel special."
"That's a really nice story," Daniel interrupted quickly, turning to walk away. "Hope you enjoy each other's company."
He stopped when another guy came up the stairs. A really familiar guy. He had brown hair that was cut short and brown eyes. He had on jeans and a black shirt with a leather jacket over it.
"No way," Jack said, walking forwards. "J. Daniel Atlas?" Danny looked at him confused. He couldn't put his finger on where he saw him before. "Dude, I have seen everything that you have ever done. I mean, you're like... I idolize you. Seriously." The other two occupants of the room laughed to themselves which drew Jack's attention to them.
"And Henley Reeves. Merritt McKinney. Oh, God, you guys are awesome with your escape artist tricky things and your mentalism," Jack spouted.
The three people smiled at the compliment but still looked at Jack with confusion. Well, more like two people did that since Merritt already had a feeling he knew who the kid was.
Merritt had a knowing look on his face and Henley had a look on her face that suggested she wanted to say something but Merritt beat her to it.
"Question," he said and raised up his card. "Did you get one of these?"
"Yeah," Jack answered, digging through his jean pockets and pulling out the card. He smirked. "Yeah. Death," he said, shrugging it off with a nervous laugh.
Henley lifted up her card and gave Jack a genuine smile. "The High Priestess."
Daniel showed them his card with his eyebrows raised. "I'm the Lover." His card had a picture of a snake wrapped around a heart.
Henley coughed and murmured, "three minutes."
Merritt scoffed at his and said, "Hermit." He gave Henley a wink.
"Yes, yes. That's good. This is all... nice," Daniel said, then being the control freak that he was, for example having to know everything that involves him, he asked Jack, "I'm sorry, I didn't get your name."
"Oh, I'm Jack. Jack Wilder," he answered and Daniel's, Henley's, and Merritt's eyes widened slightly, Daniel's and Henley's more.
This cannot be that same kid from all those years ago. That kid was shy and broken and this one was outgoing and looked like someone who might enjoy an adventure.
Jack shuffled uncomfortably, confused, at why they were looking at him like that.
"So, what are we – are we – we waiting for someone? Why – why are we –?" Jack asked, finally realising that they were standing outside the apartment they were meant to be meeting at.
"Door's locked," Daniel and Henley said in unison while Merritt just shrugged. Both of them were still in shock though. Or at least they were in something as far as Jack could tell.
Jack looked from Daniel to Henley in disbelief and shook his head.
"Oh, no, nothing- nothing's ever locked." He pushed his way past them to get to the door which they didn't really notice since they were giving each other knowing looks. It's time to impress. He took a pick set out of his pocket and stuck one of them in the lock and picked it in three seconds. He pushed the door and it swung in.
