Chapter 48
William felt numb.
He was in shock.
He thought she was safe.
He was angry ofcourse but he never wanted her to end up like this.
And the baby.....
William touched his forehead against the glass container. Trying to think of a way to get her out of this mess.
"You don't think I know that you still love her?" John said. William spun around to look at John. He was holding up a picture of Leah and William laughing together at a carnival.
William looked at his father and then to the picture in his hand. He couldn't remember ever being so happy. It's funny how a few days with his father could make him forget his happy life he was forced to leave behind.
"So what?" William said. "She is my past. She cheated on me!" William tried not to look at her again but the slight cough told him she was waking up.
"Yet you want to protect her and be with her if you could." John said.
"She is history. She has nothing to do with me anymore." William said raising his voice desperately.
"She was once part of your life. And it is for this reason she will be part of this." John said firmly and William kicked the container in frustration before he could stop himself.
"I know people, my son." John told him. "I know when I'm being lied to." He looked straight into William's eyes without blinking.
"John, what are you doing." Helen interrupted. "This girl. She was to marry our son!"
"But she cheated!" John said now turning to Helen. "She cheated and got pregnant with the other man's child."
Helen was about to protest but John held up his hand to silence her. She fell quiet immediately.
"I'm not finished with the rest of you." John said going down the passage a little more to see the next two containers.
Helen and Cristy went pale as they followed.
The moment they saw the next container they knew who it was for.
It was a child. A girl not older than ten years. She was unconscious and lying on the floor of the container.
"I don't know who she is." Cristy said hiding her hands in her pocket so that they wouldn't see it shaking.
"I know how much you want a child. But I think it's holding you back from the potential you have. You can do great many things if you let that part of yourself go." John said.
"How?" Cristy asked. She was sure she wouldn't like his answer.
"Pass the test and she will be freed." John said. "How much do you care for a stranger, even a child."
Cristy let out the breath she didn't realise she had been holding in. Her head was spinning. This was the last thing she expected her father to do.
"This should be a piece of cake, eh Crissy." Aaron said slapping his hand on her shoulder.
"Don't call me that." She snarled.
"And now you, Aaron." John continued moving to the next container.
"M-me??" Aaron asked looking confused.
"You do want a chance to take over after me, don't you?" John asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Ofcourse, but I have nothing holding me back." Aaron said.
"Not even him?" John asked innocently tapping on the glass of the container. Aaron turned his attention to the container with his mysterious test.
"He is my brother!" Aaron half shouted, his voice echoing down the corridor.
"I realise that." John said with an evil smile. "But if you want to join MY family and take over MY business, then you need to discard your former self and family."
John was clearly enjoying this. He even said he word 'discard' slowly for effect.
Aaron slowly looked from John to Adam and then back to John and said, "fine, what do you need me to do."
For a split second John's smile faltered. Perhaps he didn't expect Aaron to react so calmly. But he straightened up and announced.
"Do with him what you will." John said tapping the class wall of the container. "And then he goes to the incinerator."
"I'm not asking for much you know." John added on seeing the look on their faces. "It's the least you can do for what I'm offering in return."
"What if we don't do this? What if we don't want to run the business?" William asked.
"Then you both end up in the incinerator." John said glaring at William. "I didn't run this business for years by letting people walk free with my secret."
"But I'm your son!" William cried. But John just held up his hand to silence him.
"I have wasted a lot of time and energy trying to convince myself that family matters. Now all I care about this my work and my legacy."
William turned to look at Leah. She was awake and listening quietly. She looked terrified.
"Dad." Cristy said through gritted teeth "have I ever given you reason to doubt my loyalty."
"My child, in order to start new, we all must go through it." John said
"Even you, my darling." He added to Helen who went pale.
"What do you mean." She whispered to John in surprise.
"Who do you think will be putting the losers into the incinerator?" John said with a cruel laugh.
Helen looked at William and Cristy. She couldn't believe her ears.
By the end of this test, she would going to have to kill one of her two children.
William watched his father, a ball of rage burning inside of him. And then it hit him, John's tests were designed to fail.
"Shall we begin." John said.

Dana sat up straight on her bed. She felt sick and knew it had nothing to do with her pregnancy. It was just after midnight and she woke up sweating and nauseous.
She slid off the couch she fell asleep on and gulped down some water. It didn't help. She could feel like something was wrong.
She grabbed her phone and dialled Cristy.
"Straight to voice mail." She moaned. She was worried about her brothers. She tried again several times before tossing her phone across the room.
Furious, she went into Cristy's room for a change of clothes. She had to go back and find out what was going on.
As she was rummaging through the shelves she came across a dark wig. It reminded her of her real hair color. She only went blond because blond girls were Aaron's type. Maybe if she went in disguise they wouldn't recognise her.
Feeling good about her plan, she grabbed the wig and a black turtle neck shirt and black pants. She also took the leather jacket simply because it looked cool. Suddenly she realised she had forgotten the most important thing.
How was she going to get there?
Cristy had taken the boys in the car and there weren't any busses at midnight.
Then she remembered the heavy bike that Cristy carried in the back of her truck. Dana dug through several drawers before she found the keys on the nightstand.
Sighing in relief, she grabbed the keys and helmet before sliding on the leather jacket and running out the door.
"No more being a chicken. I'm going out to fight for my family." Dana though as she tore through the town, cold air made her fingers cold but she wouldn't slow down till she saw the arrow pointing towards Lanchester.
******
Yay!! Dana finally showing some strength. Will she be able to save her brothers?
Leah is back!! And is in danger.... looks like she cheated on the wrong guy.
Who do you think will win John's ridiculous test?
