Chapter 45

Text message: unknown number

Family meeting at midnight. Come to the tunnel under the maze.
-Aaron

William had to read the message several times to convince himself it was just a normal message. But it was no use. He knew he was in trouble.

Tucking his phone back into his pocket, William looked back at the doctor who was tending to Eric in the ER. Eric was conscious now, his leg still bluish and David stood by him, holding his hand.

"You should have come to me as soon as you felt it break again." The doctor said sternly.

"I fell in the shower. When I woke up I got dressed and called for help." Eric mumbled nervously.

The doctor watched him suspiciously. Clearly he did not believe the story because Eric did not look like he has had a shower is atleast a day.

"Will he be alright, Doctor?" David asked anxiously.

"Yes. Once we set his leg properly and the blood should flow through his leg again." The doctor saidZ then he turned to Eric and said "hold on to something. This will hurt only for a moment."

David stepped back to give the doctor room and he caught Eric's leg and snapped it into place.

Eric let out a yell in pain and then stopped. Breathing heavily they all looked at his bluish leg. It was starting to return to normal. William and David sighed in relief.

"I think it's best if he spends another day at the hospital. I want to keep an eye on the leg." The doctor said as he scribbled something on his notepad  and then left.

David stood beside Eric, stroking his hair gently as he slept.

It was an hour to midnight and David was getting a snack from the vending machine.

"Here." He said handing a packet of chips to William who took it gratefully. He didn't realise how hungry he was and polished off the chips in a few seconds.

"One more?" David laughed.

"Actually I have to be somewhere now, do you think you can manage on your own for a few hours?" William asked, checking his watch.

"You are leaving?" David asked nervously.

"I'll be back, I promise." William said. "They called me back for some reason and I need to go so that they don't get suspicious."

"You are going back??" David gasped almost dropping his chips.

"I have to!" William said

"But what if they kill you?" David asked. "We don't have anyone else."

William sighed. He felt so bad about leaving them behind but he knew it would be a mistake to take them with him.

"If I am not back by morning, then get yourself out of here. The moment the doctor fixes Eric, take him and get out of here. Do you hear me?" William told David, looking straight into his eyes.

"What about my family?" David asked. William cringed as the memory of him stabbing Derrick flashed in his mind again.  He couldn't tell a young boy that his parents are probably dead by now.

He paused a little before saying "I'm sorry."

David sniffed a little and turned away. "You promised to help us."

"I am helping!" William said as his phone buzzed again.

Text message: Cristy

Cristy:Did you hear about the family meeting?

Yes.:William

Cristy: Are you coming?

I am family after all!:William

Cristy: I think dad is really mad.
              Just be prepared.
Remember I am on your side.

How can I believe that?: William

Cristy: I will tell you where Dana is.

Where is she??????:William

Cristy:Tell you when you get here.

William angrily dropped his phone back into his pocket.

'Why is she holding Dana hostage if she is on my side' he thought.

"David." William said, going up to David. "Take this money. It's all I have now but it will be enough to get you and Eric a bus ticket to the city."

"Why would we need to go to the city?" David asked, his eyes wide in surprise.

"It's just incase I don't come back by morning." William explained. "I will have rooms ready for you at the Maxwell hotel over there. I will get in touch with you when I can."

"And if you can't?" David asked his hands still outstretched holding the bundle of cash William had given him.

"I will." William promised, trying not to remember the last promise he broke.

Cristy nervously mopped up the blood in the torture room where William stabbed Derrick.

Aaron had just told her about the family meeting for later that night. She was surprised that her father did not tell her himself. This was obviously not good.

Aaron told her that William was invited too!

When she was done, she packed up the knife and hid it under the stretcher where Derrick now lay. The blood stopped dripping and Cristy had wiped him clean.

"Is your father here?" Helen said busting into the room.

"No, I haven't seen him since the dinner." Cristy said looking over the dead body.

Helen began to pace the room nervously. "He just called for a meeting. Why wouldn't he tell us himself?"

"Something is up. He is obviously angry about what happened tonight." Cristy said indicating Derrick's body.

"But didn't we conclude that the gas made him do it?" Helen said and Cristy shrugged.

"We never should have made William comeback." Helen sighed.

"Why not?" Cristy asked.

"Because nothing good ever comes from him." Helen said after hesitation. When she said this, she blinked back tears before walking away leaving Cristy feeling like her teenage self when William first left the house the first time.
