Chapter 40

Rodger Fields was a very patient man. It was because of his patience that he was able to get through the hard things in life.

Seeing the crime scene photos of his wife broke him. He lost his patience often and never connected with people personally.... except for William, who he saw as a grown up version of his son.

He never thought about his son after his murder. He gave his wife and son a closed casket funeral and walked away without turning back.

Only once did he get to see his son after he was born, so it was easier to just pretend he did not have one.

Perhaps it was this cold, distant and impatient attitude that made him so good at his job. He was able to make the men he trained fear him and respect him.

When he met William he felt like he was looking at a mirror. The boy was just as detached as he was but still there one something different.

When he met him, William was in a pathetic state. He hadn't learned to manage his temper and would get into fights often which caused him to loose several jobs before landing on the streets unable to predict when he would get his next meal.

Captain's first impression of William was not a good one. He did not want someone like him on the team where he would get into fights but hiring him was not an option. Fields had got a call from John Maxwell himself, the CEO of the company which started the Maxwell hotel. He ordered him to hire his son who lived under the name "William cooper."

At first he thought he was hiring a rich man's spoiled son. But he learned that William was just like him.

Maybe William felt the same because shortly after he was hired, he opened up about why he ran away from home. He revealed the traumatic childhood stories. Obviously his first reaction was to go to the police but with the only witnesses it ready to testify against his father, Fields has not chose but to sit and wait patiently for his chance. And now, 10 years later he is getting a chance to bring justice.

Captain Rodger Fields sat in the driver seat on his car. He watched William enter the mansion in relief. A great weight was lifted from his chest.

He could feel the night getting colder but he couldn't move to turn on the heat in the car. His eyes began to close......

David and Eric stood behind Cristy, gagged and in their underwear, shivering. The house itself was kept nice and warm, but the icy cold eyes from all around the room running up and down their body sent chills up their spine.

There was a moment of comfort and relief when they saw William  onstage but that vanished when they realised he was part of the crowd eyeing them like a piece of meat.

David peered from behind Cristy to look at William properly. He was dressed in a good suit and looked red from all the cheering and back clapping.

William came forward and embraced Cristy.

"What the devil do you think you are doing?" William asked Cristy, still wrapped in the hug. He was smiling but his tone clearly suggested he was furious.

"Exactly what you asked of me, brother." Cristy replied coldly. "You wanted them back, here they are." she shoved the boys forward and handed over their chains to William to took it suspiciously. Everyone in the room was cheering at Williams gift.

"Congratulations bub!" Osborn said, shaking William's free hand once the party began to mingle again. "What are you planning for them?"

"Erm..I-I" William spluttered throwing the boys a nervous glance.

"Yes William, what are you planning?" Cristy asked, tauntingly. "I think I deserve to know considering the trouble I went through to get them for you."

William balled up his fists to control his rage. For a moment he wished there was a flight of stairs behind her so that he could push her down like last time.

Then he remembered her unconscious crumpled body at the end of the staircase after their fight and then his thoughts took him to the body of her attacker, the financial manager, Mr. Bronzer, who he also threw down same flight of stairs but after bashing his head against the railing.

Calming himself down with that thought, he gave her a big smile and said "You are the best sister! Thank you for this but i think i would like to keep them and savour them for a long time."

"You should have a talk with Jackson, The CEO of Jackson Technologies. He has this method that keeps them alive for a long time without having to compromise on their torture techniques." Osborn said excitedly.

"Oh William does not need Mr. Jackson! We have Aaron!" Cristy said with a laugh which made William's blood Boil.

"Did I hear someone say my name in praise?" came a voice from behind them. It was Aaron. He was dressed in a black tux with a smug look on his face.

"Speak of the devil." Cristy laughed.

"Not bad boy, you clean up well." Osborn said patting Aaron on the back.

"Special occasions call for a change." Aaron said adjusting his jacket while giving William a side glance. "And this is a very special occasion, isn't it William."

William was feeling suffocated now. Clearly Cristy and Aaron were suspicious of his behavior. He needed to act on his plan soon, if we wanted to clear his name and disappear again.

"I still have a lot to learn." William said with a laugh, trying to sound modest. "Late bloomer and everything."

"Don't worry ,boy. That's why I am here." Osborn said happily. "Something tells me you will be a better student this time."

"Cheers to that." William said picking up a glass of champagne from the waiter who approached them.

"To starting over." Osborn said holding up his glass.

"And to little boys." Cristy said.

"Covered in blood." Aaron added.

William's throat was dry. He emptied the entire glass in one gulp.

Soon the lights dimmed again and a single spotlight hit the stage. John walked forward with a big smile plastered o his face.

"Ladies and gentlemen, As you already know, This is not an ordinary auction. This is the celebration of the proudest moment of my life." He said. "So you are all in for a treat. Please follow my dear wife, Helen, to watch the next part of our program tonight." He said gesturing Helen who waved to follow her. William watched as the crowd excitedly follow her.

There was a growing dread inside William as he made his way with Cristy and John on either side of him. He was so worried that his face couldnt hide it anymore.

"Whats wrong William?" Cristy said as they walked. "Not getting cold feet are we?"

William threw her a look. She looked so gleeful, just waiting for him to mess up and reveal his true self.

"What do you want? This business? then its yours....I dont want it." William whispered to her angrily but carefully out of John's earshot.

"If you dont want this then what are you doing back?" Cristy whispered back, her smug look vanishing at once.

William took a deep breath looking around, giving himself time to find a way to get out of the hole he just dug himself into.

"William, just admit it." Aaron said with an evil grin. "You just don't like to be replaced."

"Say whatever you want to make yourself feel better, Aaron." William growled. "I am just trying to sort out my life."

Having enough of the conversation, William sped up to talk to Osborn. He needed to focus on the plan.

"Mr Osborn, I was-" he began but stopped because the crowed stopped too.

"William, you come this way." John said pulling him by the hand through the door before William could see what the crowd was looking at.

"Dad, what is this about?" William asked nervously following his father then his heart nearly popped out of his chest.

The site in front of him made his blood curl.
There were three people hanging by their hands in chains. He knew who they were at once.

Derrick, Sophie and Alice.

Suppressing the urge to run, William turned to his father and said. "You want me to kill them?"

"That's up to you. You get to choose one of them or all of them and whatever you choose to do with them will officially make you one of us." John said. "Everyone watching has to go through this. It's the only way to garuntee  that no one will betray us, because they would have their hands dirty too."

"Oh." William managed to say. John gave him a pat on the back before he turned to leave.

"Make me proud, son." He said and then the door closed. William gulped nervously. He was fully aware that everyone was watching him. The sooner he got this over with the sooner he could get out of there.

He stepped forward and looked at the three victims. They were all unconscious.

Alice looked terrible with so many shallow cuts and bruises.

Derrick looked like he was mentally tortured. The scratch marks on his face and hands looked self inflicted.

Sophie looked cold but otherwise unharmed.

How was he to choose?

Who would he kill to convince a room full of people he was like them?

Would Dana and her bothers ever forgive him for the pain he was about to inflict on their parents?
