Chapter 4

William got some feeling back in his legs, which slowly carried him to his door. When Leah saw him she looked terrified. She said something but William wasn't listening. He just stared at her in shock, feeling sick in his stomach.

Biting his lip to stop himself from blowing up at her, he turned around and locked himself up in the bathroom. He splashed water on his face and the stared at his own reflection in the mirror. He was angry - no, furious! But he forced himself to calm down. There must be some misunderstanding. She is not the type of girl to cheat!

They had been together for a year! If she was not happy she would have said something. Unless.... She had been cheating for a long time, And with Robson? The one who hated him so much that he tried to sabotage his career!

No! There has to be a better explanation, he thought before leaving the bathroom.

Leah was in the kitchen. Her back faced the door as she looked outside. He walked up to her and said "Is this some character you are playing for an audition?" Praying it was true, although it did not explain why Robson was there.

She turned around, her eyes bloodshot. It looked like she had been crying longer than he had been in the bathroom, or maybe he was just crying harder than ever.

"I'm sorry." She finally said after a bit of silence. "I can't – I don't know what to say." Tears started pouring from her again.

"How long?" He asked, trying not to break something.

"Not long." She said, "He had come one day to see you, but you were at the gym so he said he would wait but then we got to talking and -" she broke off, the expression on his face could kill.

"Why him?" He asked, through gritted teeth.

"He is not as bad as you think, Will." She said, talking louder now. "He just had it tough, growing up, you know."

She had taken a step closer to him but he moved back immediately. It was only then, he noticed she was holding something in her hand.

"No." He said softly, eyes fixed on the pregnancy strip.

"Will-"she tried to touch him but he gripped her arm tight and pushed her away. She gasped in pain, dropping the pregnancy strip which was positive, to hold her bruised arm.

"Is it mine?" He asked, ignoring her cry of pain.

"I don't know." She choked out through the fresh tears that poured out of her eyes.

Furious, not sure what to do with himself, he went to his room and packed a bag, moving aggressively and making Leah flinch. When bending over to pick up the bad, the ring box rolled out of his pocket and rolled towards Leah's feet. She picked it up immediately and gasped when she opened it. William grabbed it from her and tucked it back into his jacket.

"You obviously don't want it." He said coldly, swinging the bag over his shoulder and walking out. When he reached the door however he turned around and said. "Tomorrow we are doing a paternity test, If its mine, you can stay here until the baby is born but in the guest room. But if its not- you better leave and never come back again."

Next morning, William woke up late. He couldn't fall asleep till dawn. He did it was on the couch of an old motel near the place he worked.

Looking at the time he rushed to get dressed. He missed his morning laps. He should be able to make his shift at least. He dint think about the promotion at all. He almost didn't care if the captain did not choose him. But then he realized that Robson Gibbs would get the job and that made him angrier.

He rushed out of the room, buttoning up his shirt as he walked and tucking it into his pants. Suddenly a thought struck him. Was this a plot to get him off his game and get passed over for the promotion? Perhaps this was another mission sabotage. But Leah said they met a week ago. They dint even get the news until three days ago. Unable to figure it out he rushed to work.

He was late, the young trainee who told him to meet the captain the other day, jumped up and ran to William.
"Sir, Captain Fields would like to see you immediately."

Getting told off for being late just a day before the promotion was announced was the last thing he needed now.

He knocked and entered the captain's office only to freeze at the door in shock. The captain was not alone. Leah sat opposite him wearing big sunglasses, standing next to her was the last person he wanted to see, Robson Gibbs.

"Close the door behind you, Cooper." said Captain Fields. It was very hard to read his face, he looked weird, as though he was trying very hard to be expressionless.

William obeyed and moved closer to the desk while maintaining a distance from Leah and Gibbs.

"There has been an accusation, William, of assault." Captain Fields said looking at William with his eyes narrowed. "By you." He added when William did not react.

Robson Gibbs squeezed Leah's shoulder and then she removed her sunglasses. William's jaw dropped when he saw her face. Her left eye was bruised and black. She looked down, unable to look William in the eye, knowing he did not do that to her.

"Who did that to you?" William asked, knowing what she was implying. But he wanted to hear her say it.

"You did William! Or do you not remember what happened last night after you saw us together?" said Gibbs and he lifted Leah's bruised arm where William's hand print could be seen where he clutched her the previous night.

William snapped when he saw this and launched himself at Robson and punching him in the face twice before Captain Fields himself pulled him off Robson.

"WILLIAM!! I thought you were better than this!" yelled Captain Fields. Breathing hard, William clutched the end of the table for support and moved away from Robson.

"We were going to call the cops on you, but then I thought I needed to inform the captain first, now looks like you have two assault charges against you." said Gibbs, massaging his jaw.

"William, wait outside now." said Captain Fields, before sitting back down behind his desk.

William did as he was told, waited outside trying to calm himself down. Ten minutes later the door opened and Robson Gibbs came out, his arms protectively wrapped around Leah's shoulders. William just stared at them, wondering what would happen next.

"William!" The captain called him back inside.

"Sir, I did not hurt her! You know me!" William started saying as soon as he closed the door.

"I was handling the situation before you went and attacked Gibbs right in front of me!" The captain said angrily."He wanted you arrested, do you remember how hard it was for you to get a job in the first place! You are playing right into their plan."

William stared. Of course he remembered. 11 years ago, he finally left home. He had a lot of anger issues and got into fights with practically everyone. He was fired from job after job until he was left homeless. At some point he softened, the captain took pity on him and gave him a part time job at the hotel. He managed to work out his rage in the gym and eventually balanced his life, focusing on getting better at the job. With plenty of encouragement from the captain, William started to get close to the captain. This is what he wanted from a father. Unfortunately his own was cold and distant. Work was all he could think of. Vowing to be better than his father thought he was, he worked hard.

Why was he still a security guard then? Simple. To stay close to captain Rodger Fields. The captain told him that if he worked hard he could become the next captain and the pay was very good and he could live a comfortable life. Feeling more at home here than anywhere else, William never thought of other options.

"There is a way to fix this." The captain continued and William snapped back to the present.

"You go to Lanchester." He finished.

"What? But sir-" William started in shock.

"This will only be temporary." Captain said, waving his hand to cut off William. "Robson wants this promotion bad, he got some influence from the higher authorities. You fell for the trap he set up and now I have to do my job and punish you. Instead of firing you, I'm going to transfer you to Lanchester till this cools down. Robson will get the promotion, he will be happy and leave you alone. Meanwhile you spy on Lanchester for me. Figure out why our staff keeps quitting. Do that and I'll find a way to get rid of Robson and bring you back."

William swallowed hard. What a mess this was. How foolish was he, to think he could have a stable relationship.

Captain Fields felt bad for William but he was going to help him as much as possible. "don't worry." he said "you don't deserve a girl like Leah, she is just not worth it." William gave the captain a half smile.

"I'll have your transfer papers ready by the end of the day. You better go and get your affairs in order." said the captain.

"Oh and William" Captain Fields said as William walked to the door. "You are a good man, just remember that."

William nodded and left the office wondering if that was in fact true, then why did, all bad things happen to him.
