Chapter 37
Cristy stood in the kitchen of her old city apartment. It was where she would crash with the family when they came to the city.
"William joining the business? This does not make any sense at all!" Cristy thought as she chewed her lip. She had just gotten off the phone with her mother.
"The boys have finally settled down." Dana said as she entered the kitchen. "Thank you so much for helping us out."
"No problem." Cristy replied. "Do you want something to eat? I was just about to go to the store and restock the kitchen."
"I'm ok. I'm just worried about my parents." Dana said.
"I know. I'm worried about my mom too. But I trust her and if she told me not to go looking for her then I won't. I'm sure she will find a way out." Cristy said.
Dana still looked worried.
"Look, you shouldn't be so stressed, it's not good for the baby, so why don't you go take some rest while I go get us some dinner." Cristy said kindly.
"I feel like I should be doing something. I need to get out there and get them out of that awful place!" Dana said, letting her tears pour out.
"Trust me. It's better if you do not go bursting in and get them out. " Cristy said.
"Why?"
"If they see you coming, they will kill you parents immediately. If we work in secret, there is a better chance of getting them back alive." Cristy explained.
Dana did not say anything.
"I'll be back soon." Cristy said and sighed in relief as Dana went back to her room without any more questions.
Cristy grabbed her bag and locked the door as she left the house. She did not want to risk letting these kids out before she was back.
Once she was out she pulled out her cell phone and called William immediately.
"Brother! I heard you came home today?" Cristy said in a fake cherry voice.
******
William looked down at his phone and sighed. It was Cristy. He knew what this was about and there was no point delaying the conversation. He also needed to make sure the boys were safe.
"Hey Cristy." William said pretending to sound happy.
"Brother! I heard you came home today?" Cristy said.
"Yes, I had an epiphany during my short stint in prison." William said.
"Oh?"
"It's a long story, I'll tell you when I meet you." William said. "When will I meet you?"
"Tomorrow night at the dinner." Cristy said. "Surely you don't want me to miss your graduation!"
"Haha!" William fake laughed. "What about the boys? Where will you leave them?"
"They are safe with me William. Do you want them back?" Cristy asked.
"Would you give them back?" William asked, surprised.
"You saved my life, consider this as making us even." Cristy said.
"Saving your life was never to have the upper hand with you." William said irritated. "You were a child and I wanted to help. If I had done what dad taught us, you would have bled out alone in that room."
"If you are nothing like dad then why did you come back?" Cristy said angrily.
William gulped, he did it like the direction this conversation was heading. This could ruin his plan for the diner if it didn't already.
"I told you, I had an epiphany." William mumbled. He hit himself on the head to focus and fix the mess he just created.
"Why don't I believe that?" Cristy said. William's heart was beating fast. Anything he said now could risk David and Eric's life and ruin his plans for tomorrow.
"I guess you just have to wait and see. I think you owe me that much atleast." William said.
Cristy stayed silent for a while.
"Bring me the boys. Thank you for looking after them till I came back." William said.
"Ok." Cristy said shortly.
"Ok?" William asked confused. "That's it?"
"What do you want me to say? Cristy asked.
"Dammit Cristy, why do you have to make this so hard?" William said angrily. "I'm trying to make peace here!"
"See you at the dinner." She said before the line went dead. William stared at his phone in dismay.
******
Dana sat with the boys in their new room. She couldn't believe how beautiful and luxurious the apartment was. It had three bedrooms and a hot tub in the balcony.
The only thing that stopped her from sinking into the hot tub (Apart from the fact that she was pregnant) was the fact that she was still worried about her parents.
She felt guilty for enjoying a nice apartment when she knew the conditions her mother was left in.
"I'm sure I'll be able to walk by tonight. I feel a lot better." Eric was saying.
"You have a broken leg!" David said, crossing his arms. "These things don't just heal overnight."
"Boys, I need to tell you something." Dana said interrupting them. She needed to tell them she was pregnant because she couldn't keep that secret any longer. The boys waited patiently until she gathered up some courage to speak again.
"I'm pregnant." She said quickly.
Dana expected the boys to find the conversion awkward and try to change the topic soon. But she was not prepared for what happened next.
"Pregnant?! For real??" David shouted angrily. "How could you be so careless."
Dana's eyes filled with tears. "You think I wanted this to happen? You think I'm ready for this?"
"Of course not! You wanted to have fun, that's all you cared about." David spat venomously at her.
Dana was taken aback, she couldn't explain why David became so harsh but he spoke the truth. His words stung.
"David, relax." Eric said "Dana, does mom or dad or Sophie know?" Dana shook her head looking down.
David put his hand on his head in frustration. "It's Aaron's kid isn't it?" He asked.
"So what if it is?" Dana said angrily. "You won't know what I'm going through until you fall in love!"
"Love?" David laughed. "Do you know what love means?"
"Oh, and you do?" Dana retorted.
"I know that if he loved you he would never have left for a job in some lame town. " David said. "I heard you crying yourself to sleep for days!"
Dana did not reply, blinking hard to hold back her tears. She wondered when her little brother grew up and how she missed it.
"David, maybe this not the time to fight. We need to focus on getting our family back." Eric said.
"You are right, I'm sorry Dana." David said. "I just can't deal with all this now."
"I know it's hard, that's why I'm telling you." Dana said. "David, if anything happens to me, you are incharge."
"No pressure." He replied sarcastically.
"I spoke to Cristy this morning. It looks like she has a plan." Dana said.
"I hate sitting around." David said. Dana and Eric nodded in agreement.
There was a knock on the door and Cristy came in.
"I got some things from the store. How do you feel about pizza for dinner?" She asked
"Cristy." David said jumping off the end of the bed. "Thank you for helping us so much, you have done more then anyone in that town did.... but I'm afraid we cannot stay here and do nothing while our parents suffer."
Cristy did not look surprised by his reaction. She calmly put a hand on his shoulder and said. "I know this town. This is not the first time someone was taken by those monsters."
"Why won't anyone do anything about it?" David asked angrily.
"The last time someone did something, their body was chopped into pieces and tossed in his family's lawn." Cristy said.
Everyone gasped in horror.
"But I have a plan." Cristy said. "If you want to be a part of it, then I cannot stop you. But know this, If you join me there is a chance you won't survive it."
No one dared to take another breath. Cristy's words scared them to silence.
