Chapter 36
"I think this calls for a celebration!" John said happily after they shared the news about William's return to Aaron.
"Right." Aaron muttered under his breath and rolling his eyes.
Aaron did not seem to take the news very well. He seemed to be jealous of William and the attention John gave him.
"A celebration?" William said feigning humility. "I'm sure it's not that big a deal."
"This is a huge deal." John said as he poured some champagne for everyone. "My boy, my only son, my only child, has returned to me....in full working order." He added with a laugh which William returned.
"We will host the dinner tomorrow night." John declared. "I even have the perfect gift for you."
"Really dad? You dint have to...." William said.
"This is the only chance I have to show everyone how brilliant you are." John said. "For years I had to deny your existence because I couldn't handle the fact that people thought my son was... was..." his voice trailed off.
"I'm sorry I embarrassed you, dad." William said sadly. He always wanted to make his father proud but murder was not something he could do.
"It's all in the past now, son." John said. "My son has every chance to make me proud again. Once day you will be taking over the business I built all by myself after all."
"Er... I think Cristy would prefer-" William began but John cut him off.
"She is just a girl, she can't handle this." John said dismissively to which Helen frowned in disapproval.
"Women are just as capable as men, John." She said.
"Of course they are, my love. But William is our son, our flesh and blood." John explained.
"No offence, but I don't think William is ready for this." Adam said coldly, his arms crossed.
"He will learn." John said flatly and Aaron did not reply.
William sat in silence between them, contemplating everything that was happening before him.
It's been years since he sat with his family like this. It was comforting to have people who loved him, but the truth would ruin everything.
He couldn't live with the lie either, because that would destroy him.
"You look exhausted, Rob- I mean William." Helen said. "Why don't you go upstairs, I'll prepare a room for you to sleep in."
"That's ok mother, I'll just go home and sleep." William said. "I'll see you at the party tomorrow. Is there anything I need to do?"
"Just dress in something smart and black, darling." Helen said. "We have people to plan the party for us after all."
"I'll go too." Aaron said getting to his feet and they walked out together.
"I hope you are not serious about joining the business, let alone start running it." Aaron said.
"You are very direct, aren't you?" William laughed but Aaron did not. He only frowned.
"You don't think I can handle this?" William asked.
"I don't think you are who you say you are." Aaron said.
"I'm sure parents can recognise their own kids." William said sarcastically.
"I mean- I don't think you are capable of doing what we do." Aaron said through gritted teeth. He looked angry.
"I get that you don't like the fact that I'm back, but my dad would never let you take over the business anyways, so don't get your hopes up." William said, stopping in his tracks once they left the mansion. He did not want to give Aaron a chance to sabotage his return to the business.
Aaron narrowed his eyes at William and then stormed away. William sighed in relief. Now he had to find the Captain and plan their next move.

Helen was too excited to wait till morning to call Cristy and let her in on the good news.
"Mom, what's wrong?" Cristy said as soon as she picked up the call.
"Do I get to call you only when something is wrong?" Helen teased.
"Haha.... of course not." Cristy laughed. "You sound really happy though!"
"I have some very exciting news, darling." Helen said. "Rob- I mean- William is back!"
"Er... are you ok, mom?" Cristy asked. "We already knew about William coming to Lanchester, We made him come!"
"I know-" Helen said
"Do you remember us taking him and Adam from the bar?" Cristy said wondering if her mother was ok.
"He came to the bar today and gave us a jar of blood!" Hellen said happily.
"What!?" Cristy gasped. "Whose blood? And I thought he was in jail?"
"Jail? Why would he be in jail?" Helen asked.
"I don't know, but he asked me to take care of Dana's brothers until he is back." Cristy said.
Helen frowned. "Why wouldn't he just bring them to us?"
"I don't know, mom." Cristy said in a serious tone. "But this is very suspicious."
Helen laughed.
"Oh Cristy! You are always so paranoid." She said. "What do you think your brother is up to?"
"You are right, it's probably nothing." Cristy sighed. "I'll try to make it tonight. I need to deal with a few things first."
"You know what? I think I have an idea." Helen said as she saw John walk towards her and give an enquiring look.
"What idea?" John asked.
"To surprise Rob- I mean - William." Helen said with an evil smile.

"Tomorrow night I will be a free man again." William said rummaging his closet for something to wear.
"Not so easily." Captain Fields said. "I am sure there is going to be a test of loyalty.
William turned to face him with a frown on his face.
"You don't mean...." William asked, his voice trailing off because he couldn't say it out loud.
"You will have to kill someone." Captain Fields said flatly.
"No!" William said outraged. "I will not do that!"
"Obviously I'm not suggesting you kill someone. But you need to be prepared." Captain Fields said.
William gulped. "Maybe I could carry some of that extra blood with me?"
"There isn't much left." Captain Fields said. "You need to get creative of you want to survive tonight. It's going to be very dangerous."
William nodded.
"I just need to get some proof of Osborn'a involvement in Adam's attack and then we can get him arrested and clear my name." He said and then took a deep breath.
"I have to ask you, why Osborn?" Captain Fields asked. "You know so many people who could go down tonight, why did you choose Osborn in particular?"
William did not respond immediately. The moment Captain Fields asked the question, William's began to recall the days of his training.
As if a child witnessing murder or even attempt of murder wasn't traumatising enough, Williams father called for a tutor who came home every night to teach him how to kill.
"It isn't how fast you can take a life, Rob." Osborn explained as he placed a knife on the victim of the day'a throat.
"It's the pleasure of watching him react to the pain." He continued and then in a swift motion slit the man's neck. The man struggled for a while until his finally stopped moving and his eyes became empty.
10 year old William's eyes did not leave the victim's.
He knew this was wrong.
He was scared but he had to learn, his father expected him to do so or else he would be punished.
What could the boy do?
Then one day when he was about 13 years old, he heard Cristy screem.
To his horror, he found her unconscious on the ground with a knife in her abdomen. Mr Bronzer, the business financial manager was kneeling next to her with an evil look on his face as he drove the knife further into her.
"Get off her!" William screamed and Bronzer let go of the knife in shock. He was caught!
Bronzer ran with William at his tail. William was so angry! He had never felt this way before. For the first time ever he began to appreciate Osborn for teaching him few tricks.
Bronzer reached the staircase when he decided to look back and realised that William wasn't following him anymore.
Not wanting to wait until John found out, Bronzer turned to leave but someone was in the way, blocking his path down the staircase.
"You are sick! Evil! - twisted!-" William yelled.
Bronzer began to laugh. He could tell that this was the first time William was trying to cuss.
"Is that the best you can do? Didn't daddy teach you to cuss during those 'special' tutoring classes?" Bronzer laughed.
William went red in rage.
"Maybe you should go up and finish what I started?" Bronzer suggested. "Trust me! You will feel a lot better."
William did not reply. He was shaking furiously.
"Out of my way boy, I don't have time for this." Bronzer said impatiently, but William did not move.
"I said move!" Bronzer demanded. But when William still did not respond, he caught him by his collar and said. "Go now if you don't want me to tell your father about the mess you made in the display room."
At this threat, William snapped. He moved very suddenly, causing Bronzer to let of of his collar. Then he pulled him down with his tie and his Bronzer's head against the railing very hard a few times before letting him fall down the stairs.
