Chapter 33
William paced the jail cell. The detectives hounded him for hours about the disappearance of Adam. To his horror, they brought up the assault charges brought up by Robson Gibbs.
"We already know you have a rage problem." said one cop, earlier that day.
"I was falsely accused." William said trying to stay calm.
The cop narrowed his eyes, wondering if William could be telling the truth.
"Excuse me Detective O'Neil" a young officer said, sticking his head into the room.
"What is it?" The detective said without taking his eyes off William.
The young officer hesitated before coming closer to detective O'Neil and whispering something into his ear.
"Looks like you have a visitor." Detective O'Neil said standing up.
"Take him to his cell while I have a chat with this 'Visitor'" O'Neil said to the young officer. Giving William one last look, detective O'Neil left the room.
"Who would visit me here?" William wondered as he continued to pace his cell hours later, hoping desperately that it wasn't John.
"A transfer can't get you out if this one, Cooper." came a voice from the door.
William whipped around. It was captain Rodger Fields, William's LA captain. He reached Lanchester earlier than expected and William was glad to see him again.
"Sir!"
"Don't 'Sir' me!" The captain snapped at him. "Can't you stay out of trouble long enough for me to clean up you old mess?"
William's jaw dropped.
"You think I did this, sir?" He asked.
"Are you telling me this is another false accusation?" Captain Fields asked raising an eyebrow.
William knees became weak so he sunk onto the floor. Pacing the room did not help anymore. He gripped his hair tight.
Captain Fields watched him for a moment before saying. "I have spoken to the detectives, you are free for now." His tone was cold. He said this and turned on his heels and walked away.
William looked up in surprise.
Free?
William quickly followed the captain out of the police department. Detective O'Neil gave him a blank stare as William left.

Alice lay on the ground, gasping for breath. The force of the last kick on her chest really took the wind out of her.
Through her blurry vision she could make out a male figure staring at her.
"Please" she pleaded in a whispered but her throat was so dry that no sound came out.
There were shallow cuts all over her arms and legs. The blood that spilled had dried. She felt even weaker after the kicking.
"If I don't find her by the end of the day, you will die and it won't be quick, I promise." Adam said coldly, looking down at his Ex girlfriend's mother.
Her pitiable condition did not soften him at all, in fact she made a good temporary substitute for Dana. All he could think of was getting her and he wouldn't stop until he killed her and the parasite growing inside of her.
He then walked away. Leaving Alice was alone, struggling to breath.

"How did you get them to drop the charges on me?" William asked captain Fields as soon as they walked a distance from the station.
"They didn't." Captain Fields said. "But I struck a deal with them."
"What kind of deal." William asked, frowning.
"A serial killer in exchange for a short tempered fool." He replied calmly looking ahead as they walked.
"What!?" William said in outrage.
"You can't do that!" He said. "I told you I don't want to get involved in John's life."
Captain Fields stopped walking and turned to William. He caught hold of William's collar tight, with one hand and pulled him closer.
"You don't have a say in this." The captain said breathing hard in anger. "I sent you here to stay away from trouble and you go land yourself in deeper shit!"
William felt this was very unfair. "It's not like I knew they would be here. You know what my life was like with them in it." He said softly.
Captain fields let go of his collar. His expression softened a little as he recalled the time he gave William a job.
William was just evicted from his nice apartment for getting into a loud argument with someone on the street. The people where he lived were very cautious for safety and felt he was a danger to their society.
Desperate for a new job and a new place to stay, he interviewed for a job at the Maxwell hotel. William was a hard worker and even worked out at the gym during his free time.
Captain Fields thought he could relate to him when William opened up about his past. He remembered Thinking that the boy was too honest for his own good.
They came up with a story for him to start a new life and the captain had never regretted helping him. Watching William grow from a frightened and naive 18 year old to a strong man was like watching his son grow up had the universe had been kinder.
"I know you, but I also know people like them." Captain Fields said, his voice calming down.
"They don't feel anything except the high they get from murdering innocents."
William looked at the captain, he knew his already.
"If you want to stay away from trouble you need to stay away from them. That was the only way." Captain Fields said. "But now, thanks to your recklessness, we need to handover a serial killer to the police if we want to clear your name."
"How do we do that?" William asked.
"You mentioned talking to Cristy." Captain Fields said.
"Yes but I don't want her in trouble." William said immediately.
"If you keep trying to protect them then you won't have any choice but to change your identity again and go into hiding." The captain said angrily.
"I will, but after I get Dana and her family out of there. She is just a child and she has two little brothers!" William said. "I found her brothers and they are waiting for me-"
William suddenly stopped talking. He just realised what he had done.
"I'm a fool!" William gasped, smacking his own head hard.
"I send them to their deaths." He moaned.
"What are you talking about, boy." The captain said.
"I told Cristy where the boys were. I asked her to take care of them till I could get the charges dropped against me." William said.
"You never learn." Captain Fields said as they rushed back to the hotel.
William was faster than the captain, he ran straight towards the men's quarters, he didn't even stop when his current Captain, Norman, called out to him angrily. "Where have you been?"
The captain followed him closely and also ignored Norman when he called out to him in surprise.
"Captain Fields, what are you doing here?"
Captain Fields caught up with William. They found the door to his room was left wide open and the room empty.
William looked around the room as though hoping the boys would jump out from behind the curtains or something. But they were gone. William kicked the chair in frustration. What do they do now?
******
William lost the boys. Was he right to trust Cristy?
Captain Fields and William have made it their mission to clear William's name by getting a serial killer arrested. But who will go to prison?
Will he betray Cristy or her family?
