Chapter 23

A gunshot echoed the night.

"No!" William yelled as Adam fired his gun.

William jumped sideways flying straight into the road. He had hit his shoulder hard trying to break his fall and was in pain.

Adam moved closer to him and aimed his gun at him again. His face was cold and determined.

"Adam don't." William pleaded. He did not want to hurt Adam anymore then he was hurt already but he did not see a way to stay alive.

Quickly he moved his leg and side swiped Adam who fell to the ground. The gun slipped out of his grip and slid a few feet away.

Both William and Adam jumped to it at once. They struggled on the ground, throwing punches at each other and knocking each other's hands out of the gun's reach.

Shoulder still in immense pain, William made a decision to end this fight.

The decision was incredibly difficult to make but he needed to live long enough to tell Adam the truth, because Adam wouldn't be safe if William dies.

William put all is strength and push Adam to the ground and then rolled over his bandaged hand.

Adam was screaming in pain. William quickly ran to pick up the gun.

Adam was so determined that despite his pain he got up and forced himself to used his good hand to grab William's shoulder and turn his around to face him.

The force Adam had put on William's injured shoulder sent his muscle into spasm, his finger still on the trigger.

"Use your good leg to support the wall, Eric" Sophie instructed as they made a rope from their jackets to pull Eric out of the trap he had fallen into.

Eric heard a crack as he landed in the hole, his leg had been in immense pain since then. Pulling him out was difficult because his palms were sweaty and he had only one leg to climb with.

"Just a little more." David said, lying flat on the ground, hand stretched out trying to grab Eric and pull him out.

Suddenly there was heavy breeze. It made no sense how breeze came from inside the maze but it made it more difficult for them to pull him out.

David was bending into the hole to much that he was in danger of falling over himself.

"You are almost there. You can do it!" Sophie told Eric encouragingly raising her voice to be heard over the heavy winds.

They pulled hard and David was finally able to grab the back of Eric's shirt and pulled him out. All three of them collapsed on the ground breathing hard.

The heavy breeze made it hard to breath. They were beginning to chock.

"Let's move." Sophie said gasping for breath now. One hand on each of the boys, they crawled down the path.

Finally the air started to thin and their vision began to clear.

"We need to find an exit!" David said desperately with Eric on his back.

"This way" Sophie said pointing down another path. "Here, let me help you."

Sophie put an arm around Eric and David on the other side they began to walk down the path Sophie indicated.

It was a long and narrow path and they were exhausted.

"Maybe we should go back and try another path." Eric suggested.

"No way!" David panted. "For all you know this will lead us to other passages. It's a maze after all."

"No." Sophie said grimly. "We keep going straight no matter what and we will eventually reach the end." She hope she was right because that was the only thing keeping her on her feet.

Hope.

But that hope did not last long of any of them. They had finally reached the end of the passage and it was not what they were hoping for.

"Dead end!" David gasped, setting Eric down and then collapsing on the ground.

Sophie was close to tears. She went up to the wall and leaned against it hoping she could fall through it and get out of there.

They all sat there too tired to move. Negative thought began to creep in.

"We might die here tonight." David said softly.

Sophie could not deny it. She just looked at the boys on the ground, her throat dry.

"I wish I could see dad one more time." Eric said.

There was silence. Everyone was lost in thought as the darkness swallowed them.

Suddenly Sophie felt something. There was light breeze coming through the dead end wall of the hedge.

"Boys." She said suddenly, her voice cracking. "I think there is a way out."

William ran onto the road, desperately waving his hands to stop the motorcycle speeding in their direction.

"Stop! Please!" William called. "We need help."

The man on the motorcycle stopped. He got off and looked at William then looked down at the man at his feet.

William watched at the man took off his helmet to reveal his face. He gasped. It wasn't a man at all. It was a women and he already knew her.

Cristy.

"What the hell happened here?" She said angrily pointing at Adam who was lying on the ground, barely conscious and covered in blood.

"It's a long story, help me get him to the hospital, quick!" William said lifting Adam up and putting him over his shoulder.

Cristy pursed her lips and put the helmet back on.

"Hold on tight. You remember how I drive?" She said accelerating the bike.

William gulped. He could never forget what a daredevil she was on a bike, but it was a do or die situation so he got on the bike anyway.

"Now, tell me what happened." Cristy called from the front as William tried to hold on to Adam and Cristy and they flew though the cold night down the only dark road.
