19. Blanks and Dots
Sundays are more revered than most people think. The station was almost empty with just two constables on duty, one of whom was shamelessly taking a nap at the front desk. Even the hostages at the holding cell appeared to be napping against the wall, I guess it was better than making a fuss, no one was going to attend to them until Monday morning.
Charles was quiet as we waited in the interrogation room, I knew he could sense my nervous energy but there was nothing either of us could do about it.
Mfon Imeh looked frustrated with the situation but there was a glint of hope in her eyes as she sat across from us, handcuffed. The reality of the case was finally telling on her and not just through the blotches on her skin.
"Detectives. Have you found who killed my sister?"
"I believe we are staring at her." Charles sang.
"How long have you known Theodore Enun?" Her eyes snapped from Charles to me, widened a fraction then settled on the table.
"Theo? Yes. Ehm_ How long has he and Sade been going out_" She had on a contemplative face but something told me she knew more about their relationship than anyone else.
"What's your relationship with him like?" She was conflicted, torn between telling the truth and figuring out what I wanted to hear.
"He's eh, he is a good boy." It was a smart reply, safe but unfortunately for her, I still had questions and I was hungry for answers.
"So, did he give you the key that night or before then?"
The shock that spread across her features was too pronounced to be covered up by the fallacious look of confusion she tried to conjure.
"What?" She asked as an afterthought.
"It was that night, wasn't it? It's why he had to leave his house so late at night."
I was grasping at straws. As I had told my partner, it was a wild theory, one I couldn't entirely see yet but Mfon expressions as I spoke egged me on.
"You_"
The vibration of Charles's phone was surprisingly loud in the small space. He apologized quietly and checked it. There was a look of content surprise on his face as he read the text and looked at Mfon. He leaned towards my ear and whispered words that imbibed me with more vigor to push on.
"Theodore Enun is Anthony Joshua." Of course this didn't label him a suspect but it was reason enough to bring him in for further questioning and boy did we need to chat.
"Bring him in."
Charles left the room, already dialling on his phone. Mfon's eyes were cast low and her shoulders slack, it was the most defeated I had seen her.
"We didn't kill her." It was said barely above a whisper but it was almost enough to draw a sigh of relief out of me. Not yet though.
"How long did you plan it?"
"Three years." It took a while for her to meet my eyes and when she did, she panicked.
"But we didn't do it. Idara was already dead when I got there."
"So that could just mean that Theodore beat you to it." Straws. Nothing made sense, everything was disorganized.
"No. No, he gave me the key and went back home." Her fake accent had finally given way for her original tone with a touch of her mother's tongue.
"I was only there because he had refused to do it."
There was an air of determination around her, like she knew the only way out of this for her was if she divulged information, regardless of how it made her appear.
"Why?"
"Apparently, he developed a conscience."
"Something you clearly do not possess."
"Look, you can judge me all you want detective Kaima Wilson but the fact remains that I didn't kill Idara, even if I had planned to."
"Tell me miss Imeh, why were you going to kill your sister?"
"It doesn't matter. She is dead anyway"
"And I still can't see how this benefits you."
"Not if I'm locked in here. Not if Theo doesn't get the assets."
"So, that is why you needed him."
"Everything Idara and her husband own falls to Sade but only after both their deaths and Idara? Her health was of great importance to her, she wasn't going to just get a heart attack. The plan was to off her but Theo became convinced he could get her to transfer everything to him instead and that is just delusional because Idara was never going to play around with her girls' future."
"So you decided to go on without him, except someone still beat you to it."
"Exactly." She stated like an accomplished pitcher.
* * * * *
As Theodore Enun walked into the interrogation room accompanied by Charles, a scoff almost escaped me. This man clad in baggy jeans and a muscle shirt could never pass as Anthony Joshua.
He took the seat Mfon had recently vacated and smirked at me, fueling my need to knock him off his high horse.
"Hi detective. Missed me?" His smile was not beautiful but there was a certain boyish charm to it. Maybe that was how he got Sade and her mother.
"There is just something that I need to know." I leaned towards him. "How long had you and Sade been together before you started shagging her mom?"
He took a while to digest the question and when he did, he sat up, alarmed. Sade didn't know about this. Good.
"I mean, I know you had been doing it for over a year but just for the record."
He glanced worriedly between Charles and I, surveying the room. How was this coward supposed to kill a woman?
"When did you make the decision to kill her? Was it before or while you two started going at it?"
"Wow, wow. I never planned to kill her."
"That is not what your accomplice said."
"Mfon?" He stared in disbelief. "What did that witch tell you?"
"Everything."
He took in deep breaths in an attempt to calm himself.
"Look. When Mfon came to me, the plan was to make her niece fall for me and swindle her of her father's wealth. Then she found out Mrs. Coker was still in charge of everything and started complaining about how it was a bust. I thought it was game over until Sade's mom started looking my way and I could not pass up on that opportunity, yunno. Maybe if I played my cards right, she fit show me love but Mfon got desperate, started talking about offing her and I never agreed, not even once."
He took his time staring into mine and Charles' faces.
"I'm fucked up, I know but Mrs. Coker was a good woman. Forget wetin we bin de do, that woman always came through for me massively. After she called us off, I suggested blackmailing her when Mfon kept insisting but she said Idara would rather face humiliation than jeopardize her daughters' future so I washed my hands off."
"You had that much of a conscience but not enough to report to the police or even confide in Mrs. Coker." He sighed heavily.
"Honestly, I didn't think Mfon would go through with it, I mean the woman was her sister but when she called me that night, it was already too late. There was no way I could alert anyone without implicating myself and ruining things with Sade."
"I think sleeping with her mother would do that effectively." He looked about ready to punch me in the face.
"I've told you everything I know. Yes, I took the back key from Mrs. Coker's room, yes I went to give it to Mfon that night but I didn't kill her."
"Then who stabbed the woman?" Charles thought out loud.
"I don't know. The only person I know wanted her dead was Mfon but she said she was going to suffocate her with a pillow. How do you stab your blood to death?"
His question had the wheels in my head turning at maximum speed, dots were connecting and I couldn't believe it. He was still talking to me, pleading that I not tell Sade about his indiscretions and for a moment I marveled at how he thought cheating on her was worse than conspiring to kill her mother.
There were a few questions roaming in my head as I walked out of the interrogation room like; how did Sade's blade end up in all this? Theodore could have taken it, he could have stabbed Mrs. Coker regardless of what he said, he knew to avoid the cameras and he had a means to get inside the house but aside being a spineless goat, this wouldn't benefit him. If he framed Sade and she got put away, there was no way he was getting the assets.
Who would want to frame Sade? Like a pure shower, Funmi's words come back to me.
"If it was Sade, why would she take it back to her room and place it where it'd definitely be found?"
My phone began ringing as I mulled on it.
"Dr. Eteng."
"I have the autopsy ready for you detective."
"That is wonderful doc, I am on my way to you."
"Good. I think you will like the surprise I have for you." He sounded like a kid about to surprise his parents with good grades.
"What is that?"
"You know how you wondered why there was minimal blood at the scene of the crime?" He was giddy.
"Yes."
"I found out why."
