Chapter 15 Familiar in Homeroom

I wake up and try to enter the room. Damn. It's still sealed. Girls are starting to stream out of the dorm and head towards the school. I guess I need to risk banging the door. It was at this point that Mary made an appearance.

"What is this familiar doing?"

I turn to look at her.

"Oh? You registered my presence once again. What a surprising familiar. Or did your master instruct you to do this specifically when I am around?"

Apparently, it was strange to talk to a familiar. There were girls in the courtyard watching our interaction. Of course, I kept my face impassive and just stared back at her.

"Move aside."

The girl rattled the door.

"So she has locked herself in huh? This won't do."

The girl appears to cast some magic, but I miss it. She did not use an incantation, magic circle or say anything to invoke it. The door springs open.

"Go and wake up your lazy master. I'll leave the rest to you."

An unexpectedly nice gesture. Maybe Mary does not actually dislike master. I enter the room alone and shake Linda. I had overslept so there was no time to make her breakfast.

"What? How did you get in? I magically sealed the room."

"Mary opened the door for me?"

"She did?"

"Yes. You should thank her."

"Did you forget that there should be no way for you to communicate that to me?"

So Mary did a good deed without expecting any thanks. How noble. They should become friends.

"It is time for school."

"Great.'

Linda grumbled and rolled out of bed. Time for more sexual harassment.

"Like help getting dressed?"

I grin. Apparently, the master hadn't noticed until she rolled out of bed that she had slept in her underwear. I guess she was not expecting me to be able to get in. She blushes furiously, and roundhouse kicks me in the face. I am blasted straight out the door and over the railing. I fall down to the ground. Luckily it was only from the second story, and I am not hurt. I think it is the effect of the so-called contract. A master cannot intentionally or unintentionally hurt the familiar so even if she pushed me off a ledge the damage is negated. Lucky me. This could have seriously injured me.

Linda is already standing next to me by the time I realize it. Wow. Fast dress skills and speed. We walk off towards the school. I wonder where we are going? Hopefully master knows what she is doing. And we are lost.

We wander around the campus but like I said it is huge. We will never find our classroom in time. Suddenly an unexpected savior appears!

"Linda!"

"Casey!"

Forget the savior part. Casey is bawling in Linda's arms and exclaiming about how lost she is. Speaking of Casey, we still have not met her ghost of a roommate. I want to ask her where she is if she is not with Casey. Master does not seem inclined to ask though, and I can't do it. We set off on our adventure again with plus one added to the party. Surprisingly we find the building and manage to make it into the classroom 1-A just as the bell chimes.

I walk beside Linda and then take a seat next to her in the back row. The class is huge. In the center, there are ascending rows before a small stage where the professor will likely lecture from. On the left side, the familiars have gathered. If I have to say there are about five times as many familiars as students. There are approximately fifty students in the classroom. That being said the place was not cramped in the slightest. We can easily fit twice these numbers, and many of the rows are empty. Most of the students are lined up in the front. Casey had gone there too. My master, however, seemed content to be the only person in the back row.

"Linda."

"Don't talk."

"Move to the front."

I whisper this to her. She glares at me. We draw closer to the front but are still a row behind the other students. At this time the homeroom teacher Miss Collins makes her appearance. It has been awhile since I last saw her but I recognize her immediately. She has a powerful aura. I feel like she is the no-nonsense type of teacher. The room quiets down too. Not that the familiars were making any noise. I wonder if it is alright for me to sit down next to Linda instead of standing with the other familiars. I want to have a good vantage point for the class though. Miss Collins begins with roll call while ignoring me. Safe for the time being.

"Mary!"

"Here!"

The process continued in that fashion for a while, and Linda was last on the list.

"Good everyone is here on time. Sorry for the slow roll call but in the future, it will be magically processed as you enter the classrooms so other than the first time you will not need to go through this again. You will experience it three more times today, and when you choose your three electives, you will do it for each of those classes as well."

There is not any groaning seems as though the students just accepted it. Rather I think it is amazing that magic will automatically record attendance in the future.

"I know most of you have already read the student handbook and have this information already, but we are here until the first period starts so let us use this time to go over some of the general guidelines for the A-class."

"Homeroom is a rather short period, and attendance is not mandatory as this is not an official class. However, there will be times in the future when you must attend homeroom in particular during midterms and finals. There will also be other occasions, but you will receive notifications on when you need to be here."

"The first three classes of the day are the same for all students although they are differentiated by ranks. Grades determine the difficulty level of a class so keep that in mind when picking out electives. There are some special considerations to remember. This is the A-class which means you are the most advanced among the freshman. Work hard to keep your position in this class. Only the top fifty students are allowed into A-class, and if you drop from the top fifty during midterms or finals, you will be moved to B-class. Although you will remain enrolled in the classes, you have chosen for this year elective-wise."

"When picking electives, you are free to choose any course you desire that is B-rank of above. This includes taking the school's most advanced courses. I can tell you now that none of you are ready for them. If you actually desire to take an SS rank class or higher though please speak with me beforehand. While freshmen have undertaken categories of SS rank difficulty in the past and there is no rule against taking them as a freshman, I will tell you that the vast majority of you are not prepared for the coursework in those classes. In the history of this school, the number of students who could pass SS-rank classes as freshmen can be counted on one hand. Be prudent when choosing electives as you will stick to them for an entire year. If you wish to change classes at some point, you will need to have a conference with me first."

"During the last three periods of today please use the time to go around and look at the classes you may be interested in. Tomorrow you should begin regularly attending the electives of your choice. You will be enrolled in the classes that you attend tomorrow. You can also choose not to participate in a period but can only have a maximum of one free period. If you are thinking of taking an SS rank class, it may be a good idea to take a free period or to choose easy courses for yourself."

"There are SSS and SSSS rank classes that take two periods long for electives. Do not even think about them. There has not been a first year besides Lady Clarissa to have passed one of these courses in her first year as a student. You should not take one of these until you have mastered the corresponding SS rank class. Many students take the same elective class twice even when they have already passed the course because moving up in difficulty is extremely hard. There is no shame in reinforcing your existing knowledge. Rather it is a better idea to take classes you are capable of handling than classes you cannot. Keep that in mind. You will only be left behind if you try to do more than you are capable of."

Harsh but good advice. Still is the difference in difficulty that substantial?

"It is about time for the first period to begin. I hope everyone is prepared."

"Yes, ma'am!"
